+ All-new luxury utility vehicle with distinctive Cadillac style
+ Two new engines available: the next-generation 4.6L Northstar V-8 VVT (Variable Valve Timing) and the all-new 3.6L V-6 VVT, both with five-speed automatic transmission
+ Segment-first Magnetic Ride Control, electronically controlled magnetic-fluid based real-time damping system
The all-new Cadillac SRX luxury sport utility vehicle will go on sale in Europe in September 2004, bringing a heightened level of performance and flexibility to the segment. It is a vehicle able to handle whatever path is put in front of it, yet drives like a sports sedan and looks like nothing else on the road. Its bold, breakthrough styling instantly announces Cadillac's arrival in the segment.
A genuine all-rounder, the SRX is based on an all-wheel drive application of GM's acclaimed new Sigma architecture, shared with the new CTS sedan. The Cadillac SRX is the division's first-ever luxury crossover vehicle and its introduction positions Cadillac in a segment in which it has not previously competed.
The new SRX is the latest model to express Cadillac's bold new design form vocabulary with the crisp, sharp-edged look of its concept vehicle predecessor, the 2001 Vizón. It is combined with the striking vertical headlights, bold front side sections and the V-shaped front tapering into the classic Cadillac grille. As the first of Cadillac's S-series of models, SRX shares automotive DNA with future vehicles like the next generation STS sedan. The SRX name is consistent with the Cadillac product naming strategy. The first letter denotes the series. The second and the third letters stand for "reconfigurable" and "crossover".
Designed to deliver superior driving dynamics, the longest wheelbase in its class at 2.96 metres, is one of many attributes that sets SRX apart, offering the advantages both of exceptional rear legroom and helping to provide excellent ride quality and dynamic stability. A near 50-50 weight distribution, a low center of gravity, an outstanding powertrain combination and a host of the latest vehicle stability technologies contribute to making SRX a vehicle that is, at its core, fun to drive.
Northstar power
SRX is powered by a duo of new engines, including the next-generation 4.6L Northstar V-8 VVT (Variable Valve Timing) and the all-new 3.6L V-6 VVT. The 4.6-liter, 32-valve V-8 Northstar engine, extensively re-engineered and mounted longitudinally in the first all wheel-drive application of the Northstar engine family, is a sophisticated, technically advanced powerplant that generates 239 kW (325 hp) at 6500 rpm and 427 Nm of torque at 4400 rpm. The engine, which made its debut in the RWD Cadillac XLR luxury roadster, incorporates a host of technical innovations, including electronic throttle control and phasers on all four camshafts to control valve timing throughout the entire operating range.
The 3.6-liter V-6 VVT develops 190 kW (258 hp) at 6500 rpm and 339 Nm of torque at 2800 rpm. The 60-degree dual overhead cam (DOHC), 24-valve powerplant boasts a number of performance refinements, including electronic throttle control, variable valve timing, multi-port fuel injection, two-stage roller chain cam drive, aluminium block and cylinder heads and a forged steel crankshaft.
Both engines are mated to five-speed automatic transmissions; the 5L50-E with the V-8 VVT and the 5L40-E with the V-6 VVT. The 5L50-E, with 25 percent more torque capacity than the 5L40-E, features Performance Algorithm Shifting (PAS), an innovative new dual-plate torque converter and a separate, highly refined transmission control module (TCM) with expanded power and memory. Both transmissions feature Driver Shift Control (which offers clutchless manual shifting), electronically controlled engine braking, downgrade detection with brake assist, and Performance Algorithm Liftfoot.
Sophisticated chassis management
Chassis management and vehicle control systems on the SRX offer a high level of sophistication to respond accordingly to all types of driving conditions. Features include the latest four-channel StabiliTrak active suspension control and a segment-first option of Magnetic Ride Control.
Magnetic Ride Control uses electronically controlled magnetic-fluid based real time damping to create the world's fastest reacting suspension control system. Speed sensitive variable effort steering, four-channel ABS with Panic Brake Assist and traction control and available AWD also are included.
The Cadillac SRX also incorporates all-aluminium suspension components to reduce unsprung mass and optimize suspension performance. The SRX suspension system uses an independent short/long arm (SLA) up front and fully independent multi-link in the rear for superior ride and handling. Speed sensitive variable effort steering, four-channel ABS with Panic Brake Assist and traction control and available AWD also are included.
Standout styling and quality
At first glance, SRX is instantly recognizable as one of the "new" Cadillac range and is unlike anything else on the road. The family resemblance to CTS and XLR is immediately evident; the Cadillac bloodline shows through in its chiseled vertical tail and headlamps and V-shaped grille. At the same time, the dramatically styled SRX clearly stands out from its European and Japanese competitors.
The luxury crossover vehicle will be built at GM's new state-of-the art Lansing Grand River Assembly Plant. This facility is also currently producing the Cadillac CTS sedan and has just been ranked the best assembly plant in North and South America for initial quality in the 2004 J.D Power Initial Quality Study, in which Cadillac emerged as a leader among luxury nameplates in North America. This facility received this year's prestigious J.D Power Gold Plant Award.
