The new Opel Adam S is the sporty top-of-the-range addition to the highly acclaimed Adam family. Like its siblings, it features a wide, unique offer of interior and exterior colors, materials and design elements that enable its owner to customize the according to his/her taste and spirit. In addition, it seduces potential buyers with a slick and sporty design on both the in- and outside. Well planted on its wide tracks, the Adam S expresses is extra sportiness with a front lip spoiler, a rear spoiler that really produces downforce at higher speeds and an extended rear bumper cut-out with a visible, bold exhaust tailpipe. 17-inch wheels are standard with the S model, and bold 18-inch wheels including red brake calipers are offered as an option. Exterior individualization is made possible by a selection of ten different bodywork colors that, if whished, can be combined with five contrasted roof colors including the new vibrant 'Red'n Roll', exclusive to the Adam S. On the inside, customers can tailor their pocket rocket with optional features such the checkered flag headliner design or Recaro performance seats.
"The Adam S delivers exactly what is says on the package: fun and performance. Its bold proportions, its slick and seductive design with typical Opel cues and sophisticated surfacing emphasize its sporty characteristics and just make you want to take the wheel. And once you sit in it, you get even more excited by its sporty ambiance paired with high-quality materials and excellent craftsmanship," said Opel's Vice President for Design Mark Adams.
Exciting exterior
Adam's bold proportions give it a natural sporty appeal: it has wide front and rear tracks (1,472 and 1,464 mm respectively) that are combined with a 2,311 mm long wheelbase. It's wide and it's short, it looks agile and muscular at the same time. In addition, the slick and stylish design of the Opel Adam S clearly states that it packs a considerable punch. Typically sculpted Opel design cues such as the blade in the lower door and the characteristic crisp 'shock wave' around the door handles energize its flanks. Opel's signature 'wing' shaped daytime running lights and rear lamps, both using crisp LED technology, also clearly depict the new Adam S as a member of the current Opel family. And, the exclusive front lip spoiler, side sill moldings, suspended rear spoiler and an extended rear bumper cut-out with a visible, bold exhaust tailpipe characterize Adam S' athletic bodywork. The Adam S is planted on sporty looking 17-inch wheels, and exclusive, new 18-inch wheels are also offered as an option.
Like its Adam stable-mates, the latest, sporty addition to the lineup offers a wide range of individualization possibilities. A total of ten body paint choices ranging from 'Saturday White Fever' to 'I'll be Black' can be combined with five roof colors such as 'White my Fire' or the Adam S exclusive 'Red 'n' Roll'. The special Adam S logo on the C pillars completes the look. Those who want an even more impressive entry can individualize the roof and bodywork with additional special 'S' graphics.
Dazzling interior
The interior design delivers what Adam S' upmarket exterior promises: style and premium- inspired sporty ambience in a remarkably spacious front passengers' environment for a small car. Four different seat arrangements are available for the driver and front passenger, three of which are exclusively available for the sportiest Adam. Highlights in comfort, support and looks are the Recaro performance seats in Morrocana/Cloth combination, or Nappa Leather.
The 'Red ʼn' Roll' color theme, exclusively offered for Adam S' roof, is also continued in many ways around the cabin - for example with the optional leather package including black and red steering wheel, gear knob and handbrake in leather, with the specific silver/red racing décor on the instrument panel, with the key in grey-black-red Adam S design or with red stitching on the door panels. The sporty atmosphere can be rounded off by small but important optional details such as special Adam S floor mats, aluminum-capped sports pedals, and aluminum door entry strips with Opel lettering. Aficionados who want even more racing flair inside their pocket rocket can choose the checkered flag headliner design.
Furthermore, a multi-color LED interior lighting package is available. At the press of a button located above the windscreen, it allows choosing amongst and playing with eight different colors (from white to dark blue including orange and red) for the ambient light on the center stack and the foot-well. The system can be switched off or dimmed when required.
Award-winning connectivity and safety features
Opel's sophisticated IntelliLink infotainment system that offers state-of-the-art connectivity rounds off the refined interior. It is fully compatible with latest smartphones using both Android and Apple iOS. It provides USB and Bluetooth connectivity, audio streaming, six speakers and a 7-inch high-resolution color touch-screen. The driver can use apps like BringGo for navigation as well as Stitcher and TuneIn for worldwide radio and podcast reception.
Comfort features that come standard in the Adam S include an electronic climate control, tinted Solar Protect heat insulation glazing at the rear and vanity mirrors for both the driver and the front passenger. The Adam S can also be fitted with a clever Advanced Park Assist. At speeds below 30 km/h, the system identifies suitable parking spaces and automatically parks the vehicle, without the driver touching the wheel. The ultrasonic sensor-based system measures parallel or perpendicular parking spots, calculates the vehicle's trajectory and automatically steers the Adam S into a space. The driver just controls acceleration, deceleration and gear shifting. Advanced Park Assist always comes with Opel's Side Blind Spot Alert that was just distinguished with the NCAP Advanced Award for its contribution to active safety. It also uses the ultrasonic sensors to warn the driver of an imminent collision when changing lanes. The sensors have a range of three meters to the left and right of the car, enabling them to detect objects or other vehicles in the driver's blind spot. Whenever another vehicle comes within range of the sensors, a warning LED illuminates in the relevant exterior door mirror.
Ready for Action
With the current range of models, Opel's Adam family has successfully laid claim to the stake 'Individualization Champion'. Sheer endless combinations of trims, colors, wheels etc. empower customers to create their own personalized car. Now the Adam S is set to take buyers with a preference for a sportier drive by storm. Like its siblings, the Adam S offers a wide range of individualization possibilities but it hits the roads with a new, sporty 110 kW/150 hp, 1.4-liter Turbo ECOTEC engine and a specially tuned chassis - guaranteeing an exciting and lively drive.
"The Adam S is the powerful top of the range version of our Adam family," explained Opel Group CEO Dr. Karl-Thomas Neumann. "150 hp and a top speed of 210 km/h are already promising credentials; in combination with the lively handling, precise steering and the exceptional OPC braking system we have all the attributes of a true pocket sportsman. The Adam S is made for fun outings on winding mountainous roads - every switchback is pure pleasure."
Turbocharged pocket rocket
Opel powertrain engineers have specially developed a new, specific version of the 1.4-liter Turbo ECOTEC engine for the Adam S. With 110 kW/150 hp and 220 Nm of torque on tap, it boasts a specific power output exceeding 100 hp/liter and delivers 50 percent more horsepower and 70 percent more torque than its naturally aspirated 1.4-liter stable-mate available for the Adam and Adam ROCKS. With this 1.4 Turbo, the Adam family now comprises three naturally aspirated units with outputs of 51 kW/70 hp, 64 kW/87 hp and 74 kW/100 hp, and three turbocharged engines with 66 kW/90 hp, 85 kW/115 hp and 110 kW/150 hp which are all three combined with a 6-speed manual gearbox.
The new 1.4-liter turbocharged engine has been developed to deliver outstanding responsiveness and a torque plateau that suits a spirited style of driving, making curvy roads requiring active driving in 2nd and 3rd gears the ideal terrain for the little sports star. The Adam S has been specifically fitted with a short-geared transmission, optimized for elasticity and providing a very sporty feeling. It enables throttle response to be felt after each gear change, literally propelling the pocket rocket from one corner to the next and creating a special driving experience.
Focus during development has been put on elasticity and responsiveness rather than pure top speed - although the 210 km/h top speed are rather impressive for the size of the car. This is particularly evident during fifth-gear acceleration from 80 to 120 km/h, an important speed range for overtaking, with the transition made in just 7.9 seconds - a full three seconds quicker than what an Adam 85 kW/115 hp 1.0 Turbo requires.
Nonetheless, speed and acceleration were by no means the only things engineers took into consideration when developing the 1.4-liter turbo. Low emissions and reasonable appetite given the hot temperament of the pocket rocket were also on their minds. The Adam S makes do with a mere 5.9 liters of gasoline per 100 kilometers in the combined cycle (139 g/km CO2). Adam S' engine complies with Euro 6 emissions standard, and Start/Stop technology is fitted as standard. Numerous weight-saving features include a cast iron block with a hollow frame structure, hollow-cast camshafts, a plastic intake manifold, as well as a turbocharger integrated within the exhaust manifold. Dual cam phasing allows for continuously variable valve timing.
Performance chassis and steering
With sporty driving characteristics in mind, the engineers also tuned the performance chassis and the direct, sharp performance steering, always walking and mastering the fine line between aforementioned attributes and driving comfort. The rear axle has been redesigned and a specific spring/damper set-up further enhances the dynamic handling. In the Adam S unlike any other Adam, experienced drivers can further influence their drive by de-activating the Electronic Stability Program (ESP Plus) when pressing the dedicated button on the center console.
With such an active set-up, matching the vehicle's love for curvy roads, braking characteristics are naturally of great importance. Therefore, Adam S' braking system comes from the previous generation Corsa OPC. It features 308 mm ventilated discs in the front and 264 mm discs in the rear. Adam S is equipped standard with 17-inch wheels and 215/45 R 17 tires, and specific 18-inch wheels with propeller-design rims fitted with 225/35 R 18 tires are also available.
