One model, two distinct body styles and a new front end. A unique style featuring elements strongly emblematic of the DS style. Even more advanced technology, and extreme refinement still visible in every detail... Introducing New DS4 and DS4 Crossback.
Sold in 120,000 examples since launch, DS4 is gaining new impetus with the arrival of two complementary models: New DS4, a dynamic and elegant hatchback for customers looking for feelings and driving pleasure, and DS4 Crossback, an all-new body style with go-anywhere looks, and a higher driving position.
With this twofold offering, DS is addressing the expectations of customers in the premium compact vehicle segment. A segment that has seen the appearance of new body styles with character in recent years. Crossover vehicles now make up 30% of the premium compact hatchback market.
"DS is the spirit of avant-garde. In the case of the DS4, the brand's spirit is expressed through an offering made up of two body styles: a new premium hatchback and an unprecedented new offer: DS4 Crossback, with elegant go-anywhere style. With such complementary vehicles, the DS brand is clearly stating its ambitions and its ability to meet customer expectations," says Yves Bonnefont, CEO, DS brand.
With its flowing, elegant lines, chrome-finish body signatures that highlight design's beauty and high-performance engines, New DS4 has all the qualities of a premium hatchback along with a more personal touch provided by the two-tone body/roof. A feature new to this segment. With its luxurious, refined, exclusive and even more customisable interior, this DS is the rightful heir to DS cars' tradition, a tradition tinged with luxury, refinement and cutting-edge technology. New DS4 will represent a unique offering in the premium compact segment.
DS4 Crossback is an eminently versatile car. Its 'go-anywhere' approach is reflected in its higher ride height, its large black wheels, as well as in its wheel arch trim and roof bars, amongst other features.
In this way, New DS4 and DS4 Crossback perfectly embody the character of DS vehicles:
Premiered at the 2015 Frankfurt Motor Show, these models arrive in showrooms across Europe from November 2015.
ONE MODEL, TWO BODY STYLES
A unique vehicle since its launch in 2011, which earned it the prestigious titles of "Most Beautiful Car of the Year" and "Most Beautiful Interior" at the Festival International Automobile, DS4 has chosen to keep its two distinctive, complementary versions: New DS4, a dynamic and refined premium hatchback, and DS4 Crossback, in the form of a stylish adventurer thanks to its 30-mm higher ride height, large black wheels and body components specific to a model of its type (wheel arch trims, spoilers and roof bars)
New DS4: refined and unique with its customised features, styling and performance
New DS4 is a vehicle of unique body lines, with flowing, sculpted and elegant lines and chrome-finish signatures on the front grille and elsewhere on the body (grille and front and rear bumper, side mouldings, window shape). With its new, stronger, stance, underlined by wide wheels, four corners and remarkable style (diamonding) this version of DS4 meets all the attributes expected of a premium hatchback, starting, first and foremost, with a promise of pleasant driving sensations.
A key trait of DS vehicles, customisation. It is a leading philosophy already embraced with DS 3, that now exists with DS4. With a choice of four colours for the roof (Perla Nera black, Whisper, Virtuel blue, Tourmaline orange) and spoilers (with their associated trim: door mirrors and wheel hub caps), New DS4 introduces its own vision of two-tone offering. Overall, no less than 38 combinations are possible based on the range of roof colours and body colours (four new colours: Encre blue, Tourmaline orange, Artense grey and Rubis red). This offering, which is unique in the premium compact segment, lets customers adapt their car to their personality and life style.
DS4 Crossback: versatile, expressive and adventurous by nature
Versatile in concept and design, DS4 Crossback is aimed at customers looking for 'urban and extra-urban adventure'. This vehicle displays its go-anywhere credentials with strong styling features including wheel arch trims, a black front end and spoiler, large black wheels, special grey roof bars, upward vision of 45° thanks to the panoramic windscreen, black exterior rear-view mirrors, door sill and carpet mats. Its status is further underlined by a ride height that is 30 mm higher than on the hatchback version.
With its shimmering, expressive colours (Tourmaline orange, for example), and high driving position, it offers an alternative to conventional hatchbacks in this segment, with a more cheerful touch.
AVANT-GARDE DESIGN
"A DS is identified first and foremost through its body style, unique proportions with a strong personality. Our choice for DS4? A wide road-hugging body style for New DS4 hatchback version and an elegant go-anywhere style for DS4 Crossback. With these two distinct vehicles, we are remaining true to our ambition: to deliver a new and exciting experience." Thierry Metroz, DS Styling Director
A front end expressing brand identity with the DS Wings grille and DS LED VISION light signature
Introduced on DS 5, the new front end can now be seen on the new DS4 vehicles. It was directly inspired from prestigious Numéro 9 Concept Car, and gave birth to the overall product and style strategy of DS.
It comprises:
Styling that is sober, elegant refined... and visible
With their strongly marked lines and features and full but simple form, the two new DS4 embody all the styling attributes of DS.
Viewed from the side, both body styles feature a chrome belt running around the dark-tinted side windows with a tautly drawn roofline ending in a spoiler. The compact, muscular rear styling maintains its refined, distinctive design. To enhance this unique styling, the horizontal light guides showcase the rear lights.
A HIGH-TECH OBJECT
"New DS4 and DS4 Crossback bring together the best in DS technology. Result: two vehicles, two new DS, with a very strong personality and an incomparable level of equipment and finishing - generally reserved for the next segment up - efficient engines that set absolute standards in terms of performance and fuel efficiency, and modern connectivity features. While the Crossback body style is sure to inspire surprise and enthusiasm, New DS4 hatchback version is a real alternative to conventional premium vehicles." Eric Apode, VP Products and Business Development
Further connectivity enhancements
DS4 is the first DS (and, indeed, the first car from the PSA group) to run Apple CarPlay™, which offers motorists enhanced safety, intelligence and entertainment from in-car use of iPhone devices.
The new 7" colour touchscreen brings in the very latest HMI (human-machine interface) innovations from the PSA group to offer DS4 drivers a smooth high-tech driving experience. There are twelve fewer buttons on the central fascia, with the new-generation screen giving ergonomic access to all vehicle functions. Among the most spectacular is the New Mirror Screen feature, which runs either Apple CarPlay™ or MirrorLink® to duplicate smartphone content on the car's dashboard screen. Apple CarPlay™ (one of the new features on New DS4) offers intuitive (fingertip or voice controlled) access to phone, maps, music and messages. CarPlay™ can be operated either from the native car interface or using Siri voice control, for zero driver distraction.
Even after the journey is over, DS customers can keep in touch with car data directly from their smartphones. The free MyDS application tells them when the next servicing is due, when they'll have to refuel, and can even locate where their DS is parked. MyDS is available for Android and iOS. And on Android smartphones compatible with the MirrorLink standard, MyDS will even read and write text messages on the move.
All today's DS models are fully connected, further proof of the DS front-line stance on technological progress.
Like all the vehicles in the range, New DS4 and DS4 Crossback will be shipping early 2016 with the DS Connect Box, which includes:
A wealth of equipment combining safety and comfort
The high-tech approach reflected in these new connected services (MirrorLink and Carplay) is also visible in other functions available on DS4. For example, a reversing camera, and keyless entry and start are now available, alongside blind spot monitoring and lane departure warning functions, for greater comfort and - above all - safety. New DS4 also features massaging seats, an unique equipment in this segment, a semi aniline leather used for the watch strap design and a leather-upholstered dashboard that turns every journey into a wonderful time.
As the worthy heir to the original DS with its swivelling lights, DS4 has Xenon directional headlights, LED fog lights, LED scrolling indicators and the cornering light function (unique in this segment). Whether on the hatchback or Crossback version, most of these functions are available from the first level of trim.
Increasingly efficient engines
New DS4 will be launched in October with six engines emitting between 97g/km and138g/km of CO2: one PureTech, two THP and three BlueHDi. DS4 Crossback will ship with a choice of four engines: two petrol and two diesel. Engine output is improved and now ranges from 120 to 210 bhp, with torque of between 230 and 400 Nm. Fuel consumption is significantly reduced, at between 3.7 and 5.9l per 100 km). Result: New DS4 and DS4 Crossback are on a par with the best in their segment.
PureTech 130 S&S and 6-speed manual gearbox
The PureTech family - rewarded in last June by the international price of engine of the year - of 3-cylinder petrol engines gained a new turbocharged version: the PureTech 130 S&S. This new powertrain delivers plenty of torque from low revs over a wide band for a spirited performance.
On DS4, this engine has output of 96 kW (131 bhp) at 5,500 rpm (an increase of 9% over its predecessor, the VTi 120) and maximum torque of 230 Nm (an increase of 44% compared with the VTi 120, from1,750 rpm instead of 4,250 rpm).
At the same time, the PureTech 130 S&S engine with a 6-speed manual gearbox cuts both fuel consumption and CO2 emissions by 21%. As a result, New DS4 and DS4 Crossback PureTech 130 S&S with a 6-speed manual gearbox consume just 4.9 l/100 km with CO2 emissions of 112g/km with 16-inch wheels.
THP 165 S&S EAT6
Mated to the new 6-speed automatic gearbox (faster gear changing, greater driveability, reduced internal friction, etc.), DS4 THP 165 S&S is an impressive performer, with fuel consumption of 5.5 l/100 km- a 29% improvement on the THP 160- CO2 emissions of under 130g/km, and 240 Nm of torque.
With maximum injection pressure of 200 bars and Stop&Start technology (with a reinforced starter), this engine has maximum output of 121 kW (165 bhp EEC) at 6,000 rpm. Maximum torque of 240 Nm is available from 1,400 rpm and remains constant to 4,000 rpm, for remarkable driveability at both low and high revs.
THP 210 S&S with a 6-speed manual gearbox
New DS4 will be the first DS vehicle to ship with the THP 210 S&S. This engine delivers maximum output of 155 kW (210 bhp CEE) at 6,000 rpm. Maximum torque of 285 Nm is available from 1,750 rpm and remains constant to 5,000 rpm, for remarkable driveability at both low and high revs. Fuel consumption is 5.9l per 100 km for CO2 emissions of 138g/km.
This high-performance engine is a perfect match for the dynamic, refined styling of New DS4 hatchback. For this reason, it will be available only with the hatchback version.
With respect to diesel, the range is naturally available with the latest-generation BlueHDi diesel engines.
BlueHDi combines advanced performance with low fuel consumption and CO2 emissions. These results were achieved by working directly on the engine (improved internal efficiency, new diamond-like carbon coating, fewer mechanical losses, etc.) and by implementing an innovative and efficient exhaust system. The innovative and unique character of this exhaust line lies in its specific layout: the SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction) module positioned upstream of the additive particulate filter is the only after-treatment system able to reduce NOx emissions by up to 90% as well as reducing CO2 emissions by up to 4%.
BlueHDi 120 S&S 6-speed manual or EAT6
This is the entry-level diesel engine for DS4. Mated to either a 6-speed manual gearbox or the new 6-speed automatic gearbox, it shows real promise: 3.7l per 100 km and 97g/km of CO2 with the 6-speed manual gearbox, or 3.8l per 100 km and 99g/km of CO2 with the EAT6, for torque of 300 Nm. With these figures, New DS4 hatchback version and DS4 Crossback set the standard for fuel efficiency with respect to the competition.
Blue HDi 150 S&S with a 6-speed manual gearbox
The BlueHDi 150 S&S with a 6-speed manual gearbox is a strong performer in the DS engine range, delivering 50 Nm more torque and 25 bhp more power, while cutting CO2 emissions and fuel consumption by more than 20% compared with the HDi 135.
As a result: the figures speak for themselves: 3.8l per 100 km and 97g/km of CO2 for torque of 370 Nm. Based on these three criteria, New DS4 BlueHDi 150 S&S with a 6-speed manual gearbox emerges as the benchmark with, in particular, between 20 and 70 Nm more torque than its main competitors.
This engine will be available only on New DS4 hatchback version.
BlueHDi 180 S&S EAT6: fuel economy and torque
A further diesel engine in the line-up: the BlueHDi 180 S&S EAT6. With the new EAT6 six-speed automatic gearbox, it delivers outstanding performance and fuel economy: 4.3l per 100 km and113g/km of CO2 for torque of 400 Nm. With up to 50 Nm more torque than its main competitors and a best-in-class torque rating, this engine delivers outstanding driveability on both New DS4 and DS4 Crossback!
REFINEMENT AND ATTENTION TO DETAIL, KEY DS VALUES
The watchwords for DS are refinement and attention to detail, both on the outside and the inside.
This is very much in evidence on New DS4 and DS4 Crossback. Considerable thought has been given to every detail!
The emphasis on detail is visible in the use of authentic materials (metal, aluminium, leather, etc.) showcased in a unique and exclusive way, as illustrated by the 'watch strap' design of the leather seats.
For example, DS4 is available with three types of leather, including full grain nappa leather and semi-aniline leather, one of the world's finest types of leather, rarely used in the automotive industry. On DS4, attention to detail is taken to the extreme with an integral leather trim: the dashboard and front and rear door panels are upholstered in hand-sewn nappa leather. Owing to the concave and convex lines of the dashboard, it takes eight hours for an upholsterer to complete this complex manual process.
A further illustration of the French-style luxury offered by DS is the two-tone offering on New DS4 (roof and bodywork). A unique offering in the premium hatchback segment. The paintwork requires the craftsmanship of a team of experts customising manually the new DS4 vehicles.
DYNAMIC, RELAXED HANDLING
To account for changing ride heights, specific adjustment of the powertrain and steering were made to the two body styles in order to strengthen the driving characteristics that are unanimously recognised in DS4 in terms of comfort and handling.
With a lower centre of gravity, New DS4 is more agile and stable. Drivers will enjoy the car's nice feel in complete comfort. With a ride height raised by 30 mm, DS4 Crossback offers a higher driving position (greater visibility and a more relaxed drive) and is able to take on different types of terrain.
Available with both body styles, Intelligent Traction Control is a driving aid that optimises anti-skid regulation of the front wheels on surfaces with little grip. It improves "start-up" performance, particularly on snow-covered surfaces, as well as driveability when coming out of a turn.
Intelligent Traction Control is particularly efficient on DS4 Crossback, since it boosts the car's performance on surfaces with little grip.
