The completely redeveloped second generation of the Touareg was launched in the middle of 2010. The Touareg now being presented is based on that generation. It has now been further developed in accordance with the layout of the Volkswagen design DNA, which calls for very clear and precise lines with strong horizontal division of both front and rear sections. The front section in particular, with its remodelled band of radiator grille and headlights, creates a first link to the Volkswagen SUV concept cars of recent times.
The design of the front of the Touareg has been completely reworked. Particularly striking elements are the now larger headlights. These are bi-xenon headlights (25 W) as standard on all versions. A bi-xenon version (35 W) with LED daytime running lights and dynamic cornering lights is available as an option. The trapezoid-shaped light fittings form a line towards the centre of the vehicle with the restyled radiator grille, which incorporates the VW emblem (3D design). In contrast to its predecessor, the grille is embellished by four rather than two chrome slats and extends, as do the headlights as well, further down into the bumper, which is now horizontally divided even more strongly than before. As a result the new Touareg looks appreciably wider. The bottom section of the bumper with its completely new look fits well into this image: very much as on the new Passat the bottom air intake, complete with decorative grille, now forms a broad, stylised 'A' instead of a 'V'; on its immediate left and right are the side air intakes in trapezoid form. This makes the Touareg look even more sturdy on the road. Arranged below this are the likewise redesigned fog lights. Stylistically they form the outer bottom ends of the aforementioned 'A'. If the 'Chrome & Style' package has been ordered, there follows at the next level a chrome strip and a bumper zone painted in the vehicle body colour. This enhancement continues around the sides and rear section.
From behind the now even more precise Touareg can be identified by its new, clearly shaped bumper, which, in similar fashion to the front, underlines the SUV's width. A diffuser, also redesigned, has been integrated between the tailpipes of the exhaust system. The designers have relocated the LED rear fog lights and the reflectors into the bumper. Looking from bottom to top, features that catch the eye around the rear hatch are the chrome strip (added here too with the 'Chrome & Style' package), the remodelled VW emblem and a sharpened character line between the rear lights (optionally LED). The Touareg with the 193 kW V6 TDI also has a roof spoiler, which further reduces air turbulence at the back and thus fuel consumption as well. For models with the other engines this spoiler can also be ordered as an optional extra via the 'R-Line' exterior package.
The features that distinguish the Touareg from the side are two redesigned styles of wheels. In the 18-inch format the 'Arica' alloy wheel comes into use with this new model generation. Its design is characterised by ten spokes. By contrast, the new 20-inch alloy wheel has five double spokes. Its name is the 'Masafi'. As an addition to the optional tinted windows that absorb 65 per cent of the light, there is now also a version of glass for the passenger compartment that absorbs 90 per cent of the light and is almost impossible to see through from the outside.
Volkswagen will be offering the latest Touareg in a total of twelve colours, five of which are new to the range: 'Light Silver Metallic', 'Sand Gold Metallic', 'Moonlight Blue Metallic', 'Black Oak Brown Metallic' and 'Reef Blue Metallic'.
The interior of the Touareg reflects an extraordinary alliance of robust SUV elements and elegant high-class features. The SUV elements in the Touareg include the aluminium rotary knobs for the Climatronic system, suspension adjustment and air suspension control, for the radio/navigation system, wing mirror adjustment and air vents - they are all now replaced by redesigned high-end aluminium rotary knobs, which have been optimised in terms of both look and feel. Another striking feature is the illumination of the controls, which in every case is now white instead of red. The ambient lighting (doors, footwells and roof console) is now also white. Also new: chrome trim around control modules such as the suspension adjuster. Above the infotainment system on the centre console, additions have been made to the central row of buttons and indicators. Until now there were three elements here from left to right: 'Park Distance Control' (PDC), the hazard warning lights switch and the 'Passenger Airbag Off' indicator. Arranged to the left of the PDC button there is now an additional switch for the heated steering wheel, being offered for the first time as an optional extra for the Touareg, while integrated to the right of the indicator for the passenger airbag is the new button for the heated windscreen (also an optional extra). A new front-seat feature: manually adjustable lumbar support even for the standard seat.
Seat cover materials and wood accents
The range of seat cover materials and wood accents has been extended. For example, 'Vienna leather': in addition to 'Titanium Black', Corn Silk Beige' and 'Nature Brown', a fourth colour, 'Bonanza' (dark, reddish brown) is now available. Over and above these four colours, the particularly refined 'Nappa leather' can also be ordered in the likewise new colour of 'St. Tropez' (a light, sandy shade). Also new: the 'Sapelli Mahogany' and 'Engineered Ebony' wood accents.
High-tech SUV safer than ever before: New Automatic Post-Collision Braking System prevents any further dangerous collisions
Volkswagen is offering its premium class SUV in a highly sophisticated equipment version and as a special 'Touareg Exclusive' model. There are differentiations between the V6 versions and the even better equipped models with V8 and hybrid drive systems. Furthermore, the Touareg is available with a large array of driver assistance and convenience systems. Many of these systems are included as standard, such as the new Automatic Post-Collision Braking System. As well as via the standard optional extras, the Touareg can be customised very specifically via newly conceived 'R-Line' packages and 'Volkswagen Exclusive' features, which are also new.
Standard features of the V6 models
The V6 FSI and V6 TDI versions are already equipped ex-factory with features such as the new bi-xenon headlights, permanent four-wheel drive, 17-inch alloy wheels (with 235 tyres), the new Automatic Post-Collision Braking System, cruise control with multifunction steering wheel, RCD 550 infotainment system with touchscreen, automatic air conditioning (Climatronic), Servotronic steering and ESC with trailer stabilisation. The BlueMotion Technology models are additionally given a Stop-Start system, a battery regeneration mode and a new coasting function. Also a standard feature is the flexibility of the rear bench seat, which can be adjusted lengthways by 160 millimetres. The seatback can be split and folded down in a 40:20:40 ratio and its angle is also adjustable.
Standard features of the V8 and hybrid models
In the case of the V8 versions and the Touareg Hybrid the standard features include differing or additional details such as 18-inch alloy wheels (with 255 tyres), the 'Chrome & Style' design package (optional for V6 versions), comfort seats in 'Vienna leather', wood accents, an electric opening and closing function for the rear hatch, an anti-theft alarm system and the Keyless Access lock and ignition system.
Key optional features and assistance systems
With its numerous systems for providing driver assistance and added comfort, the Touareg is one of the safest and most comfortable SUVs on the market. A few examples: the largest panoramic sliding roof of all SUVs on the market ensures plenty of light even on overcast days. Using four cameras, the Area View assistance system recognises what is around the Touareg, thus providing added safety. Protection is also provided by up to nine airbags. Lane Assist ensures no drifting out of the correct lane, while Side Assist warns when changing lane of any vehicles approaching from behind. Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) plus Front Assist inclusive of the City Emergency Braking function brings the Touareg to a stop in an emergency and makes driving in traffic jams easier with the Stop-and-Go assistant. The Pre-Crash proactive occupant protection system interlinks the assistance systems and ensures that if the worst comes to worst not only are the seat belts pulled taut, but that based on the lateral dynamics the windows and panoramic sliding roof are closed as well. Innovative too are the high-quality bi-xenon headlights with optional Dynamic Light Assist. This camera-based permanent full-beam system 'sees' oncoming traffic and any vehicles going in the same direction up ahead and automatically regulates the beam - individually for each headlight via the cornering light module - without dazzling the other drivers.
New online services
In combination with the RNS 850 radio/navigation system and mobile phone preparation, the Touareg is for the first time available with mobile online services. These will include a 'Point-of-Interest (POI) Search' via Google, map display provided by the 'Google Earth™ mapping service', the 'Google Street View™' function and 'Online Traffic Information'.
'R-Line' for exterior and interior
As with previous models, Volkswagen will also be offering the new Touareg with the especially sporty 'R-Line' feature packages (exterior and interior). Included in the 'R-Line' exterior package are 19-inch ('Salvador') alloy wheels in 'Grey Metallic', bumpers in the 'R-Line' design, black gloss air intakes with additional chrome trim, side sill extensions, a black gloss diffuser at the back (also with additional chrome trim), chrome-plated tailpipes and an aerodynamically optimised roof edge spoiler. An 'R-Line' badge on the radiator grille is a further indicator of the vehicle's especially dynamic specification. The 'R-Line' interior package adds to the Touareg a sports steering wheel, 'R-Line' decorative inlays in 'Silver Lane', 'R-Line' door tread plates and stainless steel pedal caps. Optionally, the package can be added to with tinted rear windows (65 or 90 per cent light-absorbent), a black rooflining and sports seats in 'Nappa leather' or 'Alcantara / Nappa'.
'Volkswagen Exclusive' features
While with the 'R-Line' packages the main focus is on being sporty, with the also new 'Volkswagen Exclusive' features it is on elegance. Both lines - the 'R-Line' and 'Volkswagen Exclusive' - were developed by Volkswagen R. Within the scope of the 'Volkswagen Exclusive' line it is possible to customise the Touareg with refined details such as a range of decorative inlays ('Piano Black', 'Silver Net' and the fine wood inlays in 'Ash Tree Heartwood Olive Silky Sheen'), door tread plates in stainless steel (those at the front illuminated), a two-tone ('Nappa') leather interior with comfort seats in the front and a multi-function leather steering wheel with wooden rim in 'Piano Black'. In the other special edition that is also available, the 'Touareg Exclusive', a select range of these features is already stylishly assembled.
Alloy wheels from Volkswagen R
The Volkswagen R specialists have developed a number of different alloy wheels for the Touareg in the large 19, 20 and 21-inch formats. These are the 19-inch 'Girona' (with bright machined rim flange) and 'Salvador', the 20-inch 'Talladega' (in 'Sterling Silver' or 'Grey Metallic') and 'Tarragona' (in black with bright machined surface) and the 21-inch 'Mallory' (in 'Sterling Silver').
Automatic Post-Collision Braking System
One new standard technological highlight is the Automatic Post-Collision Braking System. It automatically slows the vehicle right down if it is involved in an accident in order to significantly reduce its residual kinetic energy. Triggering of the post-collision braking system is based on detection of a primary collision by the airbag sensors. The system's deceleration of the Touareg is limited by the ESC controller to a maximum of 0.6 g. This value matches the deceleration level of Front Assist and ensures that the driver can maintain control of the car even in the event of automatic braking. The driver can 'override' the Automatic Post-Collision Braking System at any time. If, for example, the driver applies any noticeable pressure to the accelerator, the system is disabled. The automatic system is also deactivated whenever drivers themselves initiate an emergency stop at an even higher rate of deceleration. In essence, the driver assistance system applies the brakes and slows the car down to a speed of 10 km/h. This residual speed enables the car to be driven to a safe place to stop following the braking process.
Pre-Crash proactive occupant protection system
An essential attribute of the occupant protection system is the combination of active and passive safety elements. The technical basis for this is formed by the sensors of the drive dynamics control systems (for example Brake Assist and ESC). They help in recognising and defusing critical situations with increased accident potential at an early stage. Due to the nature of the system, Volkswagen provides the proactive occupant protection system in combination with a complete driver assistance package. This includes ACC Adaptive Cruise Control inclusive of Front Assist and City Emergency Braking, a parking distance assistant, the Lane Assist departure warning system and Side Assist lane changing assistant. If the system detects a potential accident situation, it prepares the vehicle and the occupants accordingly. Automatic tautening of the safety belts fixes driver and front-seat passenger in their seats in order to achieve the best possible protective potential from the airbag and seat belt system. In the event of a high level of lateral dynamic force, the system also closes the side windows and panoramic sliding roof, leaving in each case just a small gap.
ACC Adaptive Cruise Control
ACC Adaptive Cruise Control automatically regulates the safe distance between the Touareg and the vehicle in front - a speed control system that not only accelerates automatically, but brakes automatically as well. In an emergency, it does this all the way to a complete stop. The space in front of the vehicle is scanned via two radar sensors. This double radar system has a range of 200 metres with an aperture angle of 40 degrees. In the Touareg ACC is also interlinked with a driver assistance package, which additionally includes the Front Assist ambient monitoring system, the new City Emergency Braking function and the proactive occupant protection system. In the case of ACC 'plus' a new 'Stop-and-Go' function is included as well.
Front Assist with City Emergency Braking function
Front Assist is a system for warning the driver and braking automatically if a collision is looming. One component of the Front Assist system is the City Emergency Braking function. While at higher speeds it is Front Assist that warns drivers against getting too close to the vehicle in front and of any potential collision, it is the City Emergency Braking system that assumes this function in urban traffic.
Area View
Area View is a surroundings monitoring system. Via four cameras (in the rear hatch, the wing mirrors and the radiator grille) Area View transmits images of the complete area around the Touareg onto the central touchscreen in the centre console. Via split screen it is possible to display multiple images at the same time. The control unit also calculates from the four individual camera images a high-quality overall view of the surrounding area - from the perspective of a virtual camera above the vehicle. On off-road terrain Area View relays via the front and side cameras the scene immediately ahead and to the side of the vehicle - in extreme situations a sometimes invaluable benefit.
Lane Assist
The way that the Lane Assist lane departure warning system works is also camera-based. If there is a danger of the car changing lane without indicating, the system warns the driver by vibrating the steering wheel and by depicting the detected lane markings that the car has crossed on the instruments' multifunction display. The system consists of a camera between the rooflining and rear-view mirror and a vibration motor inside the steering wheel. The camera recognises visible lane markings (markings on one side suffice) and, using a special algorithm and taking into account driving dynamics data, calculates the risk of the car leaving the lane. Lane Assist is activated at speeds of 65 km/h and above - i.e. outside of urban areas. When the car's speed drops below 60 km/h, the system automatically deactivates.
Side Assist
Two radar sensors at the rear on the Touareg scan the approaching traffic. LEDs in the wing mirrors immediately inform the driver of any vehicle in the blind spot (Blind Spot Detection) or approaching at extreme speed (Lane Change Assist). Any use of the indicator during this information phase shows that the driver intends to change lane and thus signals potential danger. The LEDs in the wing mirrors now flash brightly, warning the driver of the possible dangerous situation. If the Touareg is equipped not only with Side Assist but also with ACC, the functionality of the Adaptive Cruise Control system is extended by a fusion of the data from both systems. Interlinked in this case with the Side Assist system, the ACC then weighs up, for instance, whether speeding up could perhaps prevent a rear-end impact, provided that the road ahead of the Touareg is clear.
Large V6 TDI more powerful and sustainable: New 262 PS V6 TDI consumes just 6.6 l/100 km
The Touareg is being offered at launch in Western Europe with two V6 TDI engines, a V8 TDI and a hybrid version. The range of power output is between 150 kW / 204 PS and 279 kW / 380 PS. Thanks to extensive aerodynamic improvements (including to the air intake openings at the front, modified wing mirror caps and new wheel spoilers), tyres optimised for low roll resistance and optimisation of friction levels in the standard 8-speed automatic transmission, Volkswagen has been able to reduce the engines' fuel consumption figures by up to five per cent. In everyday use, fuel consumption is also reduced by an optimised Stop-Start system (the engine is now switched off as soon as the speed drops below 7 km/h) and the energy recovery function. Furthermore the freewheeling function (previously available only for the Touareg Hybrid) optimises fuel economy in the versions with V6 TDI engines. The reason for this is that as soon as the driver lifts the foot off the accelerator, the engine is disconnected from the gearbox; this is known as 'coasting' and it is possible even at relatively high speeds (up to 160 km/h in the case of the Touareg Hybrid and up to 150 km/h for the V6 TDI) and thus on motorways as well. The engine's power is transmitted to the wheels via an 8-speed automatic gearbox and 4MOTION permanent four-wheel drive. In Asia, North America and Russia Volkswagen will again - as has traditionally been the case - be offering the Touareg with V6 and V8 petrol engines. The engine technologies and versions being offered at launch in Western Europe in detail:
V6 TDI with SCR catalytic converter
In terms of technical enhancements particular focus has been placed on the V6 TDI engines (with common rail direct injection), because in Europe over 90 per cent of all Touareg sales are of models with one of the two V6 TDI engines that are offered at different power levels. Both six-cylinder engines have been modified and upgraded through the addition of an SCR catalytic converter. Using 'selective catalytic reduction' the levels of nitrogen oxides in the exhaust fumes are significantly reduced. The complete emission control system consists of the new SCR-DPF catalytic converter module, an SCR metering module (AdBlue / approx. range of 15,000 km per filling) and an additional ammonia trap (eliminates any excess ammonia). In addition the exhaust gas purification system also has an oxidation catalytic converter. Thanks to the new SCR catalytic converter both Touareg V6 TDI engines meet the EU6 emission standard from the off.
V6 TDI delivering 204 PS
For the two six-cylinder engines the basic technical layout and the cubic capacity of 2,967 cc are identical. At the first power level the turbocharged direct injection diesel engine develops output of 150 kW / 204 (from 3,250 rpm). The maximum torque of an impressive 450 Nm is already available at just 1,250 rpm and remains consistently at this level up to 3,250 rpm. Consumption on the 150-kW version has been reduced from 7.0 to 6.6 litres of diesel per 100 km; this equates to CO2 emissions of 173 g/km. With this engine the Touareg accelerates to 100 km/h in 8.7 seconds and has a top speed of 206 km/h.
V6 TDI delivering 262 PS
The output of the more powerful V6 TDI has been increased from 180 kW (245 PS) to 193 kW (262 PS) now (from 4,000 rpm). With torque of 580 Nm (from 1,750 rpm), the 262-PS SUV makes not only a supreme touring car, but a particularly powerful towing vehicle as well. Important: all Touareg models have a towing capacity of up to 3,500 kg (with brakes up to 12% / without brakes up to 8% incline) on the swivelling (electrically unlocking) tow-bar. Despite the increased output, the large V6 TDI engine's consumption fell from 7.2 to an identical 6.6 l/100 km (174 g/km CO2). The 262-PS Touareg V6 TDI reaches 100 km/h in 7.3 seconds and has a top speed of 225 km/h.
V6 TDI with 262 PS and 'Terrain Tech'
Via a 'Terrain Tech' version, the 262-PS Touareg V6 TDI can be ordered instead of with a Torsen differential with an even more powerful transfer case designed for off-road use, including both a low range gear and 100% locking centre and rear axle differentials. This version has a five-stage rotary switch, via which the driver can adapt the SUV to the different uses. In the case of the 'Terrain Tech' version, which has a top speed of 220 km/h, fuel consumption is 6.9 l/100 km (previously 7.3 l/100 km), equating to 180 g/km of CO2.
V8 TDI delivering 340 PS
The most powerful TDI in the Touareg range is a V8 with an engine displacement of 4,134 cc and power output of 250 kW / 340 PS (at 4,000 rpm). Like the V6 TDI, the V8 TDI works with a common rail direct injection system. The unusually high maximum torque of 800 Newton metres is available at between 1,750 and 2,750 rpm. Juxtaposed to that is fuel consumption of, considering the power output, a modest 9.1 l/100 km (equating to 239 g/km CO2). Like the V6 TDI, the V8 TDI also has a thermal management system with a switched water pump in order to shorten the warm-up phase. The Touareg V8 TDI achieves a top speed of 242 km/h and accelerates to 100 km/h in just 5.8 seconds - the sports car among the Touareg TDI models.
Hybrid delivering 380 PS (TSI plus electric motor)
The Touareg Hybrid's drive unit consists in essence of a V6 TSI (direct injection petrol engine delivering 245 kW / 333 PS) that is supercharged, an 8-speed automatic transmission complete with torque converter, final drive and transfer case, all specifically tailored to hybrid, towing and off-road use, plus the hybrid module integrated between internal combustion engine and automatic transmission. This module - the 'hybrid heart' - contains the electric motor (34.3 kW / 46 PS) and a disengagement clutch. When the V6 TSI and electric motor are simultaneously working (boost), this produces a system output of up to 279 kW / 380 PS and maximum torque of 580 Newton metres. Despite this high power output a characteristic feature of the Touareg Hybrid, which has a top speed of 240 km/h, its low fuel consumption of just 8.2 l/100 km (equating to 193 g/km of CO2). The drive energy for the electric motor is stored in a nickel metal hydride battery (NiMH) in the spare wheel recess. At nominal voltage of 288 volts the battery has an energy capacity of 1.7 kilowatt hours (kWh). The energy stored in the battery is sufficient to power the Touareg over a distance of around two kilometres and up to a top speed of 50 km/h. As soon as the driver lifts the foot off the accelerator, the V6 TSI is decoupled from the gearbox (up to 160 km/h). As a result of the eliminated drag torque losses, the Touareg 'coasts' for an appreciably longer time. And with an anticipatory driving style this leads directly to reduced fuel consumption.
Permanent four-wheel drive in two versions: 4MOTION for globetrotters optionally with low range gear
The Touareg has as standard permanent four-wheel drive system (4MOTION; 31-degree uphill capability) and a steel-spring suspension; the running gear has been extensively upgraded. As an option Volkswagen also offers the Touareg with a four-wheel drive system (4MOTION 'Terrain Tech'; 45-degree uphill capability) complete with low range gear and innovative air suspension that is even more suitable for off-road use. Four-wheel drive system and suspension in detail:
4MOTION
In the standard configuration, the Touareg has four-wheel drive with a self-locking Torsen transfer case (uphill capability of 31 degrees) and electronic differential locks (EDS) at all four wheels. The Touareg is also equipped as standard with an 'Off-road Driving Programme', which attunes the ABS, EDS and ASR to off-road use, activates Hill Descent Assist and adapts the shift points of the automatic gearbox.
4MOTION with low range gear
In the case of the Touareg in particular there are some customers worldwide who use the SUV under the most extreme conditions. In combination with the 193 kW / 262 PS Touareg V6 TDI these customers can call on a 4MOTION drive system with the capacity to climb inclines of up to 45 degrees. This option is offered as a 'Terrain Tech' version. It includes a lockable centre differential with electrically controlled multi-plate lock and reduction gear (2.69:1), plus greater ground clearance (10 millimetres at the front, 15 at the rear). In normal operation there is a seamless, slip-dependent distribution of tractive power between front and rear axle (40:60). Additionally, it is possible to lock the centre differential in order to achieve a fixed distribution of power. In both 4MOTION systems the Stop-Start system can be manually disabled during off-road use. In combination with 'Terrain Tech', it is possible to switch off the ESC as well. In the case of vehicles with air suspension any unwanted lowering of the vehicle from the off-road level can be prevented via a 'Lock' button, which limits the speed of the Touareg to 70 km/h.
Steel-spring suspension
Volkswagen is offering the Touareg with a steel-spring suspension or optional air suspension running gear. The steel-spring suspension with independent wheel suspension used all round has now been further enhanced. The improvements include even more agile steering and added comfort. The basic layout is formed as before by two double wishbones, at the front with top suspension arms made of aluminium and lower arms made of steel. At the back the double wishbone suspension has forged upper aluminium arms and lower triangular steel arms.
Air suspension
The optional air suspension's system includes self-levelling and ride height adjustment, plus electronic damper control. On tarmac roads the air suspension guarantees an extremely high level of comfort and - thanks to speed-dependent reduction of the ride height - optimised handling characteristics. As an alternative to the automatic 'Normal' mode the driver is able to select a 'Comfort' or 'Sport' mode. If 'Comfort' is chosen, the Skyhook system fundamentally strives for the best possible compensation for surface bumps, while in 'Sport' mode with the ride height lowered by 25 millimetres the result is increased agility. On rough terrain the air suspension further improves off-road qualities by means of variable ride height while maintaining comfort at a likewise extraordinarily high level.
Off-road characteristics
With its double wishbone suspensions, the suspension of the new Touareg continues in general a tried and tested layout, which permits great spring travel and good axle articulation (4MOTION: 157 millimetres / 4MOTION 'Terrain Tech' with low range gear: 173 millimetres) on off-road terrain. The version with the standard steel-spring suspension has an approach angle of 24º at the front and a departure angle of 25º at the back. Allied with ground clearance of 220 millimetres the new Touareg thus cuts an excellent figure away from made-up roads too. If the SUV is ordered in the 'Terrain Tech' version, the vehicle body is 10 millimetres higher at the front and 15 higher at the rear. With the optional air suspension ground clearance goes up still further, to a maximum of 300 millimetres, thus also increasing the approach and departure angles.
Dynamic Driving Package with adaptive body roll compensation
In order to calibrate the driving characteristics of the Touareg further in the direction of 'dynamic handling', there are two optional possibilities. Firstly, a sports running gear with more firmly damping steel springs. Secondly, a uniquely designed version of the air suspension: the 'Driving Dynamics Package' with adaptive body roll compensation. If the customer opts for this package, the Touareg is shipped with air suspension geared to sportier driving and the vehicle body lowered by 25 millimetres. The increased dynamism is achieved by strengthened anti-roll bars, shock absorbers regulated based on movement of the steering wheel and modified control software.
