The all-new Vauxhall Corsa offers reduced fuel consumption, flexibility and refinement as key characteristics of all powertrain options, with every variant of the new model emitting less CO2 than the most efficient versions of the Corsa currently on offer.
Corsa has been Vauxhall's best-selling car for many years, with over 2.1 million Corsas sold in the UK since it launched in 1993. The British buying public are familiar with its name and looks, and have a fondness for its compact dimensions and interior packaging. Corsa is just as popular in Europe with over 13.5 million sold. The Corsa has a very diverse customer profile appealing to people from all areas of society, male and female, young and old.
Vauxhall's all-new, fifth generation Corsa has achieved a significant weight loss, with the new model weighing in from just 980kg.
Thanks to its lightweight design, the new Vauxhall Corsa weighs up to 108kg less than the outgoing model. This means that every new Corsa benefits from improved performance and handling, and increased efficiency, whether it's powered by an electric motor or conventional engine. Despite losing around ten per cent of its weight, the Corsa retains similar dimensions to the outgoing model at 4.06m with five doors as standard.
The light-weight design was created using the latest virtual development methods. The specific use of various steel grades and connection methods enabled the Vauxhall Corsa's significant weight reduction. This includes the consistent use of high-strength and ultra-high-strength steels, as well as the optimisation of load paths, connections, structure and form.
Vauxhall engineers left no stone unturned to achieve the up to 108kg weight loss. Contributors included body-in-white (40kg lighter), all-aluminium engines (15kg lighter), front seats (5.5kg lighter), rear seats (4.5kg lighter) and aluminium bonnet (2.4kg lighter).
As well as high-efficiency petrol and diesel models, an all-electric Corsa-e, the first-ever electric Corsa, arrives in Vauxhall showrooms next year. A plug-in hybrid Grandland X Hybrid4 and a Vivaro-e van then mark the next steps in Vauxhall's electrification strategy. The British brand is committed to delivering eight electrified models by 2021 and electrifying its entire product portfolio by 2024, as part of the PACE! strategic plan.
With an engine portfolio that's more efficient and more advanced than ever before, the fifth-generation Corsa strikes the ideal balance between low fuel consumption and driving excitement.
High efficiency and lively performance are signature characteristics of the new petrol engines. Internal friction and friction losses have been reduced to a minimum, resulting in smooth and efficient power delivery. The turbocharger reacts immediately when prompted, with a strong torque output developed at low revs.
Further to the enhancements made to the engine line-up, the powertrain improvements also include the two transmission options. For the first time in this segment, the popular hatchback offers a comfortable eight-speed automatic transmission which features three modes (eco, normal and sport). Adaptive shift programmes and quickshift technology are state-of-the-art in this segment, while drivers can shift gears themselves with the paddles at the steering wheel.
Pushing efficiency even further is the electric powertrain in the brand-new Corsa-e. Offering up to 205 miles of range (WLTP), the all-electric model is perfect for everyday journeys.
Petrol
Compared with the current powertrains of the Corsa range, the new engines have significantly reduced fuel consumption and emissions while retaining similar power outputs to the outgoing model.
For the all-new Vauxhall Corsa, the engine line-up begins with an entry-level 1.2-litre (75PS) petrol unit, fitted with a five-speed manual gearbox as standard (combined 47.8mpg to 53.3mpg according to WLTP, 93g/km CO2,). The 1.2-litre (75PS) can achieve a top speed of 108mph and 0-60mph in 12.4 seconds.
This is complemented by an award-winning three-cylinder, direct-injection, all-aluminium, turbocharged 1.2-litre engine with 100PS (combined 47.9mpg to 52.3mpg according to WLTP, 96g/km CO2). The engine has a maximum torque rating of 205Nm, and at least 95 per cent of maximum torque is developed between 1,500 and 3,500rpm. In combination with the low vehicle weight, excellent aerodynamics and optimised gear ratios, these factors make the Corsa great fun to drive. The 1.2-litre (100PS) can achieve a top speed of 121mph and 0-60mph in 9.3 seconds.
In addition to the six-speed manual gearbox, customers have the option of pairing this engine with a smooth eight-speed lightweight automatic transmission (combined 45.6mpg to 48.7mpg according to WLTP, 99g/km CO2). The automatic 1.2-litre (100PS) can achieve a top speed of 119mph and 0-60mph in 10.2 seconds.
Diesel
The two petrol engines are joined by a three-cylinder, turbocharged 1.5-litre diesel unit with 102PS and maximum torque of 250Nm (combined 62.8mpg to 70.6mpg according to WLTP, 85g/km CO2). The engine is paired with a six-speed manual gearbox as standard. The diesel model can achieve a top speed of 117mph and 0-60mph in 9.6 seconds.
The diesel powertrains feature an emissions reduction system for optimum exhaust after-treatment. This system consists of a passive oxidation catalyst/NOx absorber, AdBlue injector, SCR catalyst and Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) - all grouped together as a compact single unit and fitted as near as possible to the engine. The NOx absorber acts as a cold start catalyst, reducing NOx emissions at temperatures below the SCR light-off.
Electric
Customers in the market for an all-electric version can choose the all-new Corsa-e. Thanks to the common modular platform (CMP), various powertrains can be offered on one platform and manufactured on a single production line.
The Corsa-e offers a range of 205 miles (WLTP), maximum power output of 100kW/136PS and maximum torque of 260Nm. Thanks to the instant torque provided by an electric motor, drivers can accelerate from 0 to 60mph in just 7.6 seconds.
ADVANCED DRIVER ASSISTANCE SYSTEMS, INFOTAINMENT AND CONNECTIVITY
The all-new Vauxhall Corsa is equipped with numerous advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) to provide the driver with the ultimate comfort and convenience, while greatly enhancing safety for all passengers.
Enhanced safety with camera and radar technology
In addition to a flashing signal, Lane Keep Assist, appearing for the first time in the Corsa, now applies gradual corrective steering and a gentle nudge if the car unintentionally leaves its lane. A Lane Departure Warning also shows in the Driver Info Centre, above the steering wheel.
Side Blind Spot Alert uses ultrasonic sensors in the front and rear bumpers to alert the driver to any moving objects in the blind spots on either side of the car, as well as towards the rear. If a moving object is detected, a warning symbol lights up in the corresponding exterior mirror.
Until now, Adaptive Speed Control has only been offered in mid-size cars and above. Now, the system makes its debut in the all-new Corsa. Using the front camera and radar sensors, the system automatically adapts the gap between the car and the vehicle in front by accelerating or decelerating, according to the distance selected by the driver. If the vehicle in front decelerates, so does the Vauxhall Corsa - even to a standstill, if necessary. If the vehicle in front speeds up again, the Corsa also accelerates up to the selected speed, while automatically maintaining the chosen safety gap.
The Corsa also offers Forward Collision Alert with Automatic Emergency Braking (standard) and Pedestrian and Cyclist Detection The automatic emergency braking system uses radars to reduces the car's speed by up to 31mph in order to avoid or reduce the force of a heavy collision. Depending on the speed, the system can identify vehicles, pedestrians, bicycles and motorbikes.
Driver Drowsiness System also comes as standard. The system warns the driver, via audio and visual signals at three levels, to take a break after two hours of driving at speeds higher than 40mph. In addition, the system alerts the driver to the need for a break at any time if it detects that the car is behaving dangerously, such as swerving.
Speed Sign Recognition now makes use of the new high-tech front camera. This information is then presented to the driver on the infotainment display.
Easy, effortless parking
The all-new Vauxhall Corsa is also fitted with a range of systems designed to help the driver into and out of parking spaces. These include parking sensors at the rear, which features four ultrasonic sensors and gives audio and visual warnings of obstacles when parking in reverse.
Flank Guard is another premiere in the Corsa. Fitted with 12 sensors, the system warns the driver if the side of the car is about to collide with an object while manoeuvring at speeds less than 6mph. In addition to warnings displayed on the infotainment screen, the system also gives audio signals that increase in frequency the closer the car gets to the obstacle.
Finally, Panoramic Rear View Camera increases visibility by up to 180 degrees behind the car, enabling drivers to see traffic approaching from the left or right.
State-of-the-art infotainment for relaxed driving and ultimate connectivity
Sporting a range of new infotainment systems, the all-new Corsa offers relaxed driving and ultimate connectivity. The Multimedia Radio and Multimedia Navi both feature a 7.0-inch colour touchscreen, while the top-of-the-range Multimedia Navi Pro includes a HD 10.0-inch colour touchscreen. Angled slightly toward the driver, each system is perfectly positioned and clearly displayed in the instrument panel.
The Multimedia systems are compatible with both Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, and feature control via integrated voice recognition.
Vauxhall Connect
Vauxhall Connect, at the touch of a button (impact detection activates e-Call automatically), puts you in touch with a trained advisor in the event of an emergency or breakdown. The service operates 24/7, 365 days a year and is available from next year as standard on Elite and Ultimate (standard on Nav trims and on Corsa-e) models.
Vauxhall Connect will also give customers access to live navigation services, regular vehicle diagnostic info plus a host of remote convenience features available through the MyVauxhall app. These will include:
- Remote functions (e.g. lock/unlock the door)
- Additional services for electric vehicles: trip planning, remote settings and public charging solutions
- Digital Key: create and manage driver groups, control when and where they can drive
Revolutionary lighting
After making such a strong impression in the Vauxhall Astra and Insignia, the multiple award-winning IntelliLux LED® matrix light technology is now available on the all-new Vauxhall Corsa.
Outside urban areas, the matrix headlights automatically switch to high beam. Cleverly controlled by a high-resolution front camera, the light beam continuously adapts to the traffic and the surroundings to ensure optimum output without dazzling. Vehicles in front or behind the Corsa are simply cut out of the light pattern, preventing glare. With optimum vision at night, the driver has additional time to avoid potential collisions with objects or animals.
In order to further reduce CO2 emissions, Vauxhall offers highly efficient LED headlamps on the new Corsa. Each headlight consumes only 13 Watt, equating to an energy saving of 76 per cent compared with halogen, which consume up to 70 Watt per headlight.
Simply by upgrading the headlights, Vauxhall has achieved excellent CO2 savings. On average, the LED headlights on the entry-level Corsa alone save 1.3 grams of CO2 per kilometre (according to NEDC). The petrol turbo engine saves 1.38 g/km, while the diesel engine saves 1.23 g/km.
As the LEDs draw less power, Vauxhall makes use of innovative reflector technology. The reflector in each headlight is shaped like the head of a shovel, allowing the maximum amount of light from each LED to be projected onto the road. Combined with the extremely efficient LED headlights, there are no compromises in light output. Vauxhall has truly achieved optimum light performance with minimum energy consumption and environmental impact.
BEST-IN-CLASS AERODYNAMICS
Vauxhall has revealed that wind tunnel tests on its new fifth-generation Corsa will make it amongst the most aerodynamic in its class. Designed to cut drag and save energy, the all-new Corsa is engineered for high efficiency and low fuel consumption.
The Vauxhall Corsa's design includes an active aero shutter, smooth underbody and rear roof spoiler to make the model as clean through the air as possible. With a reduction in frontal area of 2.13m2 versus the previous model, the new Corsa achieves a drag coefficient of 0.29 - quite remarkable for a car of this size - allowing the car to expend less energy as it passes through the air, thereby reducing its emissions and fuel consumption.
In fact, Vauxhall engineers found that a cut in 10 per cent of drag resulted in a reduction of around two per cent in the New European Driving Cycle (NEDC), or up to five per cent when travelling at motorway speeds.
Factors aiding the class-leading results included covering the underbody of the engine compartment through to the rear axle with flat panelling to improve the airflow under the car, along with a rear spoiler to improve the car's straight-line stability. The active shutter on the new Corsa lowers drag and improves fuel efficiency by automatically closing or opening when cooling air is least needed - an innovative feature for its class. When closed, the shutter redirects air around the side of the car rather than through the less aero-efficient engine area.
However, making the new Vauxhall Corsa ultra-efficient hasn't stopped there. The new generation model has achieved significant weight loss compared to the last model, with the range starting at 980kgs, up to 10% lighter than before.
DEVELOPMENT AND TESTING
Vauxhall's all-new fifth generation Corsa is the most efficient Corsa ever after undergoing extensive testing and tuning.
Vauxhall engineers used the long polar winters in Swedish Lapland for intensive testing on frozen lakes and on snow-covered roads. Pre-production cars have been lapping the test tracks at the test centre for handling tuning, and the car has undergone electrical tests in the laboratory.
Customers can look forward to a more dynamic Corsa, delivering the typical Vauxhall balance between sportiness and comfort. Thanks to lightweight engineering, the all-new Vauxhall Corsa's weight has been reduced by more than 10 per cent compared with the outgoing model.
Winter testing in the most extreme conditions
Vauxhall engineers have been testing the next-generation Corsa for months in Swedish Lapland, around 25 miles south of the Arctic Circle. Experts from the chassis control department have been using the harsh extremes of the environment to put the car through extensive chassis tuning programmes for balanced handling and comfort, as well as refining electronic stability, traction control and anti-lock brake systems on slippery surfaces - working in temperatures as low as minus 30 degrees Celsius. The control functions of the new Corsa must function reliably regardless of ice, snow, slush or asphalt, with any level of grip.
The new Corsa offers high levels of safety, comfort and driving dynamics, under the guidance of the test engineers who strike a balance between the 'fun-to-drive' qualities expected of the Vauxhall brand, with the limits and functionality set by the Electronic Stability Program (ESP) system. Vauxhall engineers repeatedly lap the uniquely designed handling course - using both the oval and special surfaces - to continually optimise the control systems.
Testing with camouflaged cars began in Swedish Lapland last November. From January to March, the ice on the frozen lakes was around one metre thick, so that the test cars, snow-ploughs and water sprinklers could drive on them. During the long polar nights, the engineers benefitted from the Vauxhall lighting technology, as customers will with the road-ready car.
The adaptive IntelliLux LED matrix headlights are available for the first time on the new Vauxhall Corsa. The glare-free matrix headlights automatically and continuously adapt to the prevailing traffic situation and surroundings. Approaching traffic and preceding vehicles are simply 'cut out' of the illuminated area. Glare is minimised and drivers enjoy optimum visibility for the first time in the small-car market segment.
The all-new Corsa has also undergone round-the-clock laboratory testing to check for electrical compatibility, as the new Vauxhall Corsa is packed with highly advanced electronic equipment.
