Toyota Verso

Tailored to meet the increasingly varied demands of today's MPV customer, every previous version of the Toyota Verso has been developed exclusively for the European market. Launched in 2002, the first generation model sold 100,289 units. Second generation Toyota Verso of 2004 achieved sales of 410,236 units, and the third generation model has sold 144,638 units since its launch in 2009.

Each successive generation has combined Toyota's legendary Quality, Durability and Reliability with outstanding value for money, exceptional roominess within compact exterior dimensions, and the true multi-purpose vehicle practicality and versatility of the company's Easy Flat seating system.

Building on these highly-prized core attributes, the new Toyota Verso targets several key areas for improvement, offering customers greater levels of style, dynamism, comfort and desirability to make it a compelling, no-compromise compact C-segment MPV choice.

It features Toyota's bold new design language with a clear family identity, improved interior quality and styling, a revised 2.0 D-4D engine with better torque delivery and lower CO2 emissions, lower NVH levels, and enhanced driving dynamics for improved ride comfort and a more responsive, engaging and enjoyable drive.

Restyled at ED2, Toyota's European design centre in France, and with over 470 changed parts (60% visible, 40% related to driving dynamics and NVH), the new Toyota Verso represents a comprehensive model mid-lifecycle upgrade for Toyota in Europe.

Integral to Toyota's C-segment rejuvenation, the new Verso has been planned, designed, engineered and built under the leadership of Toyota Motor Europe. This is the company's first full-scale project to incorporate European-based Product Planning, Design, R & D and Purchasing from concept planning onwards, as part of Toyota's regional strategy.

Built exclusively at Toyota Motor Manufacturing Turkey, the new Verso is expected to sell around 50,000 units in 2013, giving the company a 5% share in the C-MPV segment.

New Toyota Frontal Design Treatment and Upgraded Interior

The new Toyota Verso represents a fresh, more powerful and sophisticated interpretation of the third generation Toyota MPV's distinctive, dual-zone styling, bringing an increase in dynamism and desirability to the design.

New, more aggressive and attractive front and rear styling, places the emphasis on width rather than height whilst, in profile, the new Toyota Verso retains the dynamic, full-length character line which delineates the bonnet and cabin from the chassis and rear loadspace.

To the front, the new Toyota Verso features the company's striking Under Priority design language and Keen Look styling elements, hallmarking it as the latest model in the Toyota family line-up, with a strong visual connection to the company's other core European models.

The Under Priority design features a large, trapezoidal lower grille set within a redesigned front bumper, and a smaller upper grille running full width between the new headlamps.

Dominated by a new, larger Toyota badge which is set lower than its predecessor, the upper grille features a central, chrome-plated horizontal trim bar which is visually extended into the headlamp clusters to accentuate the width of the new Toyota Verso.

Narrower and more aggressively styled, the headlamp clusters themselves incorporate Daytime Running Lights (DRLs). Higher grade models are equipped with High Intensity Discharge (HID) lamps and LED DRLs.

The large lower grille is flanked by integral foglamps with chrome surround detailing. It features a piano black paint finish, twin chrome strips and a full-width, aerodynamics-enhancing, body-coloured lip spoiler, once again accentuating the width of the new Toyota Verso and emphasising its broad, planted stance.

In profile, the new Toyota Verso retains the model's trademark, dual-zone styling. This is clearly expressed by a strong character line which flows from the leading edge of the front bumper, rising through the lower edge of the doors before sweeping upwards through the C-pillar to define the roof-mounted spoiler.

The classic Toyota Verso profile is enhanced through smaller, more dynamic and aerodynamically efficient, foldable door mirrors featuring integrated turn signal lights, and a choice of two new alloy wheels. The 17" alloys share the design of their predecessor but feature a new, darker finish, whilst the new 16" alloys have a machine faced finish.

To the rear, a new bumper design incorporates an integral low level diffuser, emphasising the width and stability of the new model. The rear lamp clusters feature colour changes to the centre lens, and, on the boot lid, the Toyota badge is emphasised through the application of a chrome rear license plate garnish.

The new Toyota Verso will be available in a choice of 11 exterior colours, of which three are new; Pearl White, Vivid Blue and Marine Blue.

Upgraded Interior Design with Improved Sensory Quality

The new Toyota Verso interior builds on the family-oriented versatility, ease of use, ergonomic efficiency and durability of its predecessor. Extensive revisions are designed to harmonise instrumentation and switchgear, and enhance both perceived and real cabin quality through new finishes and trim detailing.

The 'Smart Wave Dynamism' of the dashboard design -which lifts the cabin styling above the conventional functionality of a traditional MPV- has been retained. The design incorporates advanced switchgear ergonomics, and places the gear lever as close as possible to the steering wheel. The powerful, vertical definition of the centre console separates the focused functionality of the driver's zone from the relaxed comfort of the front passenger's zone.

The two zones are interconnected by a crisp 'wave' line running the full width of the fascia, which houses the driver's instrument binnacle. The binnacle, containing cylindrical speedometer and rev' counter dials, is offset to maximise the driver's view of the road ahead whilst still remaining within his field of vision.

The new Toyota Verso interior features the extensive use of new trim detailing and a softer feeling, satin black paint finish to enhance perceived cabin quality throughout. The upper glove box is now finished in soft touch material and the steering wheel is clad in Nappa leather.

Warm satin chrome trim highlights have been applied to the driver's instrument surrounds, the instrument binnacle hood rim, the air vents, instrument panel, gear shift bezel and door assist grips. The door handle itself is now finished in a new, satin black coating.

The presentation of instrumentation and switchgear has been harmonised through more consistent lighting and font sizing. The driver's meters are now back-lit in white for improved clarity and legibility, whilst the air conditioning dials and display, and all switchgear including window switches are illuminated in a deep orange for legibility without excessive distraction after dark.

A new rheostat switch allows for the simultaneous adjustment of both combination meter and all switchgear illumination, giving consistency to backlighting brightness and intensity throughout the interior.

Live (entry) and Active (mid) grade models feature a range of new seat fabrics - black with blue detailing for the Live grade and black with white accents with a 3D effect for Active grade models. Seat bolster support has been improved on all grades, the bolsters themselves finished in a smoother, more durable lamination.

Lounge (high) grade models are equipped with leather seat bolsters with double stitching, and a leather door trim and centre armrest finish. The Verso Lounge grade is also equipped with Smart Entry & Push Start, whilst other grades are available with a folding jack knife key.

A 2,340 mm by 1,280 mm, full-length Skyview panoramic roof is available, bringing significantly more light to the new interior and greatly enhancing perceptions of cabin spaciousness.

Exceptional Interior Roominess and Versatile Packaging

At 4,460 mm, the new Toyota Verso is just 20 mm longer than its predecessor, the redesigned front and rear of the vehicle accounting for increases in length of 15 mm and 5 mm respectively.

Despite its compact packaging, the new Toyota Verso offers exceptional interior roominess. It shares the previous model's long, 2,780 mm wheelbase, and boasts a best-in-class, 975 mm couple distance between the first and second row of seats.

The Toyota Easy Flat seating system offers true MPV flexibility, with 32 different seating permutations. Providing individual seats in both second and third rows which may be folded flat without headrest removal, second row seats with a sliding range of 195 mm, and reclining third row seatbacks, it is acknowledged as one of the most practical, flexible and intuitive seating designs available.

Completely flat with second and third row seats folded, the new Toyota Verso's loadspace is 1,575 mm long and 1,430 mm wide. With all three seating rows in place, the luggage volume measures 155 litres. With the third row seats folded, it rises to 440 litres.

The Trunk Management system, located beneath the rear loadspace of 5-seat models, is ideal for storing valuable items out of view and also provides storage for the luggage tonneau cover when not in use. Its capacity varies according to the choice of a temporary spare tyre or a tyre repair kit.

Seven-seat models equipped with a space-saver spare tyre offer an 11 litres storage box, whilst those featuring a tyre repair kit stowed in a tool box under the third row seats offer additional capacity sufficient to store three 6-pack cases of 1.5 litre plastic bottles.

As befits a true Multi-Purpose Vehicle, the new Toyota Verso offers a comprehensive range of storage compartments, including a twin compartment glovebox featuring a cooled upper section large enough to hold a 1.5 litre bottle and an 8.2 litre lower section.

It also has a spacious centre console box, generous door pockets, seat back storage beneath aviation-style, fold out tables with integral cupholders, a drawer beneath the front passenger seat, second row underfloor storage, an overhead console and driver and passenger pockets for mobile phone and MP3 player storage.

Lower NVH for Improved Cabin Quietness

The new Toyota Verso features upgraded cabin NVH measures. The dash silencer has been redesigned with improved sound damping between the engine bay and cabin, maximising engine sound absorption and wind noise insulation.

The new 2.0 D-4D diesel unit has also been made more quiet by a reduction in combustion noise.

Wind noise has simultaneously been reduced through better sound damping on the A-pillar, the adoption of a smaller, more aerodynamic door mirror design and improved sealing on all door corners.

In combination, these measures have resulted in a perceptibly quieter on-board environment. The cabin articulation index has improved from 0.76 to 0.83, further enhancing occupant comfort and promoting a greater sense of well-being in every seating position.

Enhanced Driving Dynamics

The stability and ride comfort of a conventional passenger car are fundamental dynamic attributes of the C-MPV segment, and the Toyota Verso is already appreciated for its high level of stability and the confidence it inspires in its drivers.

In the new Verso, Toyota's engineers have focused on revisions to the vehicle's body rigidity, suspension and Electric Power Steering (EPS) to combine these essential attributes with improved ride comfort, greater body control and, most significantly, improved steering feel and response for more agile, engaging handling.

Revised Suspension set-up for Improved Ride Comfort

Both the front MacPherson strut and rear torsion beam suspension systems have been redeveloped. Damper and valve settings have been changed to combine stable handling with maximum ride comfort for all vehicle occupants.

Improved Steering Feel and Response

Improvements to steering feel and response have been achieved through both bodyshell rigidity enhancements and revisions to the Electric Power Steering itself.

Body rigidity has been improved through the addition of extra welding points to the tailgate opening surround and rear door pillar. And the front suspension system features new bracing and reinforcements. The increases in bodyshell and suspension mounting rigidity improve body control and the fidelity of the suspension geometry and, hence, the speed and accuracy of steering response.

In conjunction with these improvements in body control and suspension fidelity, the EPS control software has been revised. The result is an improvement in steering precision, linear response and feel; the improved accuracy and feedback giving Toyota Verso drivers a stronger sense of connection to the road surface for greater confidence behind the wheel.

Enhanced Aerodynamics

Benefitting from a new frontal design and smaller door mirrors, the new Toyota Verso's overall aerodynamic performance has been improved by 5-10%. This has resulted in increased fuel efficiency, better NVH, a more comfortable ride and increased vehicle stability.

From the outset, wind tunnel analysis focused on harmonising the bodywork design, making the use of secondary, add-on aerodynamic trim components unnecessary.

Particular attention has been paid to the flow of air beneath the MPV. A smooth underfloor with engine, fuel tank and rear floor covers, wheel spats and a wing-shaped vertical fin to the rear all contribute to the streamlining of the airflow, the control of vertical body movement and the optimisation of both front and rear lift coefficients. The result is a flatter straight line ride, a more controlled yaw response, and enhanced rear stability.

Combining with these aerodynamic enhancements, 17" low rolling resistance tyres are available to further improve the new Toyota Verso's fuel efficiency.

More Efficient Powertrains

The new Toyota Verso will be equipped with a choice of five engines, all benefitting from the new frontal design's improved aerodynamic efficiency and the availability of low rolling resistance 17" tyres.

As a result, and with no loss of performance, fuel consumption and CO2 emissions have decreased across the entire engine range, the latter from between 4 and 10 g/km.

The range comprises a substantially revised 124 DIN hp 2.0 litre D-4D diesel, 150 DIN hp and 177 DIN hp versions of a 2.2 litre D-CAT diesel, and a choice of 1.6 litre, 132 DIN hp and 1.8 litre, 147 DIN hp Valvematic petrol engines. All engines also benefit from the wide ranging advanced technologies and internal improvement programmes of Toyota Optimal Drive.

The 2.2 litre 150 DIN hp D-CAT diesel is mated to a 6-speed automatic transmission, the 177 DIN hp variant to a 6-speed manual gearbox. The CO2 emissions of the former have been lowered by 9 g/km to 169 g/km, and those of the latter by 6 g/km to 153 g/km.

Simultaneously, the average fuel consumption of the 150 DIN hp engine has been lowered to 6.4 l/100 km, and that of the 177 DIN hp unit to 5.8 l/100 km.

Both the 1.6 litre and 1.8 litre Valvematic petrol engines are equipped with a 6-speed manual transmission. Both engines' CO2 emissions have been lowered by 4 g/km, to 154 and 158 g/km respectively. The average fuel consumption of the 1.6 litre engine has been reduced to 6.6 l/100 km, and that of the 1.8 litre unit to 6.8 l/100 km.

The 1.8 litre unit may also be equipped with a revised automatic Multidrive transmission which now incorporates a more 'stepped' gear shift feel, with engine revs building in a manner more closely linked to vehicle acceleration.

Revised 2.0 Litre D-4D Diesel Engine

In recognition of the 2.0 litre diesel powertrain's popularity within the C-MPV segment, representing some 47% of the mix, Toyota has extensively revised its 124 DIN hp 2.0 litre D-4D turbodiesel, which complies with Euro 5 emissions regulations and now comes standard with a Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF).

Mated to a 6-speed manual transmission, the unit has been revised to improve torque delivery at low rpm and reduce combustion noise. CO2 emissions have been lowered by 10 g/km to 129 g/km, and fuel consumption has fallen by 0.4 l/100 km to only 4.9 l/100 km.

The unit features a new variable nozzle turbocharger with a lower friction bearing system and an electric actuator, and the torque characteristics of each gear have been adjusted. As a result, maximum torque of 310 Nm is now available 200 rpm earlier and across a wider rev band, from 1,600-2,400 rpm, offering a marked improvement in higher gear throttle response.

CO2 emission-reducing lubrication and cooling circuit improvements include a 2-stage pressure oil pump with improved oil jet, an optimised water pump with a reduced flow rate, and a twin-chamber oil pan to improve engine warming speeds. Exhaust emissions are further lowered through a new glow plug control strategy and improvements to the construction and coating of the DPF.

The use of a resin cylinder head cover, oil cooler bracket and water pipe reduce engine weight by 5 kg. The reduction of friction through the adoption of a low friction vacuum pump, a low friction timing chain and low viscosity oil further enhance fuel efficiency. And combustion improvement through a new piston bowl shape and the new glow strategy has perceptibly lowered engine NVH.Overall, generating higher torque at lower revs, the engine is quieter and torque delivery has become more linear.

As an option, the towing capacity of Toyota Verso 2.0 D4D models can be increased by 200 kg, to 1,500 kg.

Three Grade Line-up with Improved Standard Equipment

The new Toyota Verso carries over the three grade strategy of its predecessor. However, with an enhanced interior and an increase in standard equipment for each grade, it now represents even better value for money.

Live grade model standard equipment has been increased to now include front foglamps, a Follow Me Home headlamp function and the addition of integrated turn signal lights to the electrically adjustable and heated door mirrors.

To the already comprehensive Live grade, Active grade adds electrically folding door mirrors, a piano black paint finish front license garnish, chrome lower grille trim, chrome foglamp surrounds, a height adjustable front passenger seat, two-tone 16" machine faced alloy wheels and Toyota Touch, which incorporates a back monitor camera.

Lounge grade adds leather seat bolsters, armrest and door trim with double stitching. It features Smart Entry with push start, dual zone automatic air-conditioning, a Sensor Pack, rear side window sunshades, 17" alloy wheels and High Intensity Discharge (HID) headlamps.

A comprehensive range of options includes a Sensor Pack with automatic wiper and headlamp operation and an auto-dimming rear-view mirror, a Skyview roof and HID lamps with integrated LED DRLs.

A new Business Pack has been created with 1.6 litre petrol and 2.0 litre diesel fleet customers in mind. It includes 16" alloy wheels, a leather steering wheel, cruise control and Toyota Touch.

Toyota Touch

Fitted as standard in the new Toyota Verso from Active grade, Toyota Touch is a 6.1 inch, full colour, touch-screen interface which represents a new approach to affordable, on-board multimedia systems.

It incorporates AM/FM radio with an optional DAB/DAB+/DMB receiver, a CD/MP3 player, Bluetooth mobile phone connectivity with a music streaming facility, and a USB port for the connection of portable music players, with the facility to display iPod album cover art. A rear view camera is fitted as standard.

Toyota Touch & Go

Building on the Toyota Touch multimedia base unit, Toyota Touch & Go offers customers an enhanced, full map navigation system representing the best value for money on the market.

Available in 14 languages, Toyota Touch & Go was developed in Europe, with European customers in mind.

The system includes all the most popular navigation functions, such as advanced traffic coverage, customisable speed limits, speed camera warnings, motorway signposting, automatic zoom and junction view at motorway intersections.

Using a compatible mobile phone, via Bluetooth, the system offers on-board connectivity to Google Local Search -the largest and most up-to-date search database in the world. Via Google Maps, destinations may be input remotely from home or office, and Points of Interest may be downloaded for entry as destinations.

The installation of Touch & Go also upgrades the multimedia base unit with the addition of an SMS on-screen send/receive function incorporating a contact person image display.

Further system access to online content and apps includes a Touch & Go Apps function which offers several applications available for download, including fuel prices, weather and parking space information. A new Twitter App has been developed to allow Toyota owners to stay in touch with the 500 million Twitter users over the course of their journey.

Users can tweet a range of both personal and system generated templates whilst driving (free text input and URL links are blocked for safety reasons). Because the App is fully integrated into the navigation system, the templates can include destination and ETA information.

Toyota Touch & Go has been designed specifically to be both affordable and flexible. The system can be easily upgraded with the newest functions, updated maps and the latest Apps, as they become available.

Toyota Touch & Go Plus

When upgraded to Touch & Go Plus, the touch-screen multimedia system comes equipped with 3D city models, landmark graphics and a 'text-to-speech' message readout facility. It will also display SMS text messages, emails and calendars depending on Bluetooth mobile phone compatibility.

The Advanced Voice Recognition function allows the driver to input a full destination, make a phone call, or to pick a specific song from a connected iPod with a single voice command.

Toyota Touch & Go Plus includes three years free map and software updating.
