Toyota Yaris T Sport

The Toyota Yaris T Sport adds sports performance to the many enjoyable characteristics of the award winning Yaris range. It features a powerful 1.5-litre VVT-i engine, dynamic new looks, lowered suspension and sports-style interior.

The Toyota Yaris T Sport joins the Celica T Sport as the launch models in the new T Sport brand. They reflect Toyota's successful motorsport heritage and ambitions for the future - offering higher performance levels, sports handling and suspension characteristics, and increased driver involvement without compromising comfort or practicality.

Toyota Yaris T Sport offers class leading performance and economy in the European B segment. It accelerates to 100 km/h in just 9.0 seconds and has a top speed, where permitted, of 190 km/h.

Sports suspension delivers optimum performance and handling, with a dynamic new body styling completing the Toyota Yaris T Sport package.

Dynamic new look

Although obviously from the Yaris family, the high performance Toyota Yaris T Sport has a clearly aggressive sports image.

The lowered suspension (20mm front and rear) not only gives more sporty handling, it also creates a squatter-looking car - a look enhanced by the 15-inch alloy wheels and low profile tyres which now fill the wheel arches.

Full width deep front and rear bumpers with integrated fog lamps, a sports grille and side body skirts complete the overall dynamic image. The headlamp surround is black for extra emphasis and unique T Sport emblems identify the new brand.

The Toyota Yaris T Sport is 20mm longer than the standard car (thanks to a longer rear overhang) and 20mm lower. It is available in both three-door and five-door bodystyles.

Most powerful Yaris yet

The 1.5-litre, Variable Valve Timing-intelligent (VVT-i) engine fitted to the Toyota Yaris T Sport is the most powerful yet in the Yaris range. It develops 106 DIN hp (78kW) of power at 6,000rpm and has maximum torque of 145Nm at 4,200rpm.

Yet, thanks to Toyota's advanced VVT-i technology, the Yaris T Sport remains easy to drive and extremely economical. It achieves 6.9 litres/100km on the European combined cycle - the best in its class - and has equally low emissions (160 gm/km CO2).

This class-leading performance translates directly into a more enjoyable driving experience. The Toyota Yaris T Sport is quicker to 100km/h from rest than many 1.6-litre hot hatches and excels in mid-range acceleration - faster from 60 to 100km/h in fourth gear (8.4 seconds) than any other comparable car.

Performance tuned suspension

The Toyota Yaris T Sport suspension has been tuned to deliver the ride and handling performance that T Sport customers will expect. Yet it retains the nimble feel of the original Yaris and good ride comfort for everyday use.

Suspension springs are stiffer and dampers are harder, to cope with the extra tyre grip and produce less body roll. The lower ride height adds to the feeling of extra stability.

The low-profile 15-inch tyres increase the cornering ability and provide greater steering response and straight line stability.

Sports style interior

The interior trim of Toyota Yaris T Sport has also been modified to reflect the sporting style of the car without losing any of the original comfort or quality.

New, analogue sports style meters replace the digital instrumentation in the standard Yaris and the sports seating, plus three-spoke leather sports steering wheel, add to the high performance environment. The gear shift is two-tone metallic and black leather with a single form boot.

The Toyota Yaris T Sport range is restricted to five body colours, including a medium grey metallic unique to the range, and a new two-tone metallic and dark grey interior trim.

Powerful, economical VVT-i engine

The 1.5-litre, Variable Valve Timing-intelligent (VVT-i) engine fitted to the Toyota Yaris T Sport is the most powerful yet in the Yaris range and is also available in the Yaris Verso. It develops 106 DIN hp (78kW) of power at 6,000rpm and has maximum torque of 145Nm at 4,200rpm.

Toyota Yaris T Sport has a top speed of 190 km/h and will accelerate to 100 km/h from rest in 9.0 seconds.

Yet, thanks to Toyota's advanced VVT-i technology, the Yaris remains easy to drive and extremely economical. The T Sport (3 door) achieves 6.9 litres/100km on the European combined cycle - the best in its class - and has equally low emissions (160 gm/km CO2). The new engine complies with European Step 3 emissions legislation.

Lightweight engine design

The Toyota Yaris T Sport engine, designated 1NZ-FE, is a light, aluminium alloy block unit which has been designed for maximum efficiency.

The use of aluminium in the cylinder block and oil sump pan, plastic in the intake manifold and water inlet, and a general reduction in the total number of component parts, has kept weight to a minimum. In addition, mounting methods and positioning of auxiliary devices have been reviewed to decrease engine height and width for compactness.

The 1497cc engine is a 16-valve, twin overhead camshaft engine with a high-efficiency compression ratio of 10.5:1. The Toyota Direct Ignition system, comprising four individual ignition coils operating directly on each spark plug, means more efficient fuel burning, less emissions and less maintenance - with no ignition timing to be adjusted and no distributor to be serviced.

Low friction has been achieved by designing parts, including the offset crankshaft, to reduce the mechanical losses of the engine by 25 per cent. This, in turn, contributes to a reduction in fuel consumption.

The role of VVT-i

Toyota's Variable Valve Timing-intelligent (VVT-i) technology will play a key role in the development of T Sport products. It will allow Toyota to use more powerful, but lighter, engines across the T Sport range to offer extra performance and nimble, sports handling.

By varying the overlap time between exhaust valve closing and intake valve opening, the VVT-i engine characteristics can be changed to create optimum burn - resulting in more efficient use of fuel, cleaner exhaust emission and increased torque output, particularly at low and medium engine speeds.

The Toyota developed system has the benefit of offering continuously variable (not stepped) valve timing and allows the engine management computer to specify the optimum timing for the full range of driving conditions. It means the valve overlap timing no longer has to be fixed in advance to suit a predetermined driving environment.

More complete combustion, at a higher combustion temperature, means less nitrogen oxide emissions. An increase in valve overlap results in some recycling of unburnt fuel which reduces unburnt hydrocarbons and also results in internal exhaust gas recirculation, further reducing nitrogen oxides.

Sports exhaust

The Toyota Yaris T Sport is fitted with a specially designed exhaust pipe and silencer which maintains low emissions and high fuel-efficiency, but adds to the sports character of the car.

The large diameter tail-pipe is a design feature of the rear view ad the silencing system has been tuned to produce a deeper, more sporting engine note a low engine speeds while it reduces flow noise at high speeds.

Close ratio manual gearbox

The Toyota Yaris T Sport is fitted with a close ratio, five-speed manual transmission to provide optimum sports performance and make best use of the 1.5-litre VVT-i engine.

The sporty gearchange is emphasised by the aluminium insert, short throw gearlever and black leather gaiter.

Sports suspension provides optimum handling

Toyota Yaris T Sport is designed with a new sports suspension set-up to ensure it delivers the handling and ride characteristics demanded by T Sport customers - but without sacrificing an acceptable level of comfort for everyday use.

The squat looks created by lower ride height and increased tyre size also give Toyota Yaris T Sport a more aggressive, sporty look which suits its new image.

The Toyota Yaris T Sport is 20mm lower than the conventional hatchback which reduces the centre of gravity height and body roll. The lower centre of gravity will also mean better handling behaviour and stability at the limit.

Stiffer body structure

The Toyota Yaris T Sport body has been stiffened in certain key areas to improve torsional rigidity and steering response.

A new stiffening bar has been fitted across the lower rear of the body, under the rear bumper, to boost rear-end road holding and grip. This improves cornering stability at the limit.

The lateral stiffness of the rear torsion beam suspension has been increased by 15 per cent with a stronger bushing bracket to give more precise lateral force steering.

Sports profile tyres and wheels

Low-profile 15-inch tyres do more than add to the sporting appearance of the Toyota Yaris T Sport. They increase the cornering ability and provide greater steering response and straight line stability.

The 185/55 R15 tyres replace the 175/65 R14 units fitted to the conventional model, increasing cornering power by 15 per cent and lateral stiffness by 10 per cent.

The sports tyres are complemented by smart, six-spoke aluminium alloy wheels which are unique to the Toyota Yaris T Sport model.

High performance suspension

Although Toyota Yaris T Sport uses the same basic suspension design as the standard Yaris hatchback - MacPherson strut front and torsion beam rear - the units have been tuned to suit the sporting characteristics of the car.

The suspension tuning reduces body roll and adapts the Yaris to the greater grip offered by 15-inch tyres. It also ensures the suspension can cope with reduced ride height and avoids bottoming out.

Suspension bush mountings have been hardened to introduce more lateral stiffness and spring rates are up by 30 per cent. Damper forces are also up, by 20 per cent, and harder rubber is used in upper suspension mounts and other suspension points.

Efficient, safe brakes

The Toyota Yaris T Sport boasts excellent braking performance to match its increased power and sports handling.

Disc brakes, 14-inch, are fitted front and rear and a full anti-lock braking system is standard. Toyota Yaris T Sport is also fitted with electronic brake force distribution (EBD) to improve stability on slippery roads and under sudden braking.

The EBD control uses the ABS to optimise the distribution of braking force between the front and rear wheels in response to driving conditions and vehicle load. It also helps optimise the braking force, left to right, during cornering.

Dynamic new look, inside and out

The Toyota Yaris T Sport is designed to turn heads. While still obviously part of the Yaris family, this high performance hatchback has a clearly aggressive sports image.

The lowered suspension and larger 15-inch wheels and tyres create a squatter-looking car - a view which is enhanced by the special T Sport bodykit.

The deep front bumper and cross-woven radiator grille add strength to the design and give a clear sporty message. Headlamp surrounds have been changed to black and small, round front fog lamps are integrated into the brake cooling vents.

Side body skirts add depth beneath the doors and the rear bumper is a single piece structure, again adding visual strength. Rear fog lamp and reversing light are built in. New rear combination lamps appear red but the turn signal is, in fact, dark, smoked pink.

A rear roof spoiler is an optional extra.

Choice of body styles

The Toyota Yaris T Sport is available in both three and five door bodystyles. The T Sport is fractionally longer than the standard model, largely due to the longer rear overhang.

Overall length is now 3,635mm while the width is unchanged. The T Sport model is, of course, 20mm lower, at an overall height of 1,485mm.

Distinctive, discreet badging

The discreet T Sport emblems will soon become recognised as marks of quality engineering and sports performance.

The Toyota Yaris T Sport is marked out by its exclusive T Sport badge on the radiator grille and unique Toyota badging, with a red second O, on the rear panel.

Sports interior

The interior trim of the Toyota Yaris T Sport has been upgraded to reflect the sporting style of the car without losing any of the original comfort or quality.

The dark grey monotone instrument panel accentuates the sporty image and this is further reflected by the contrasting use of grey metallic and bright metallic finish on many trim details.

Driver and front seat passenger are held firmly in place by sports-style seating and a leather, three-spoke steering wheel with metallic trim is fitted. The sports gearshift also features grey metallic trim with leather and a full, leather gaiter.

Ahead of the driver the digital instrumentation has been replace by clear, analogue meters for tachometer and speedometer, reading black digits on a sharp, white background.

Further use of metallic trim highlights the power window switches, the interior door handle and the heater control knobs. A metallic scuff plate, featuring the model name, completes the sports image.

Full safety package

Toyota Yaris T Sport is a car that can be driven hard - but it also benefits from all Toyota's high technology safety packages that have contributed to making Yaris one of the safest small cars in Europe (NCAP 4 star rating).

Toyota Yaris T Sport features driver and passenger SRS airbags as standard with SRS side airbags an option depending on local markets. Front seat belts are pre-tensioned and force limited to minimise the risk of chest damage during an impact.

The strong Yaris bodyshell is designed to offer maximum protection in the event of a collision and to deform progressively to absorb energy and reduce passenger compartment intrusion.
