SsangYong Tivoli XLV

SsangYong Motor Company launched the new SsangYong Tivoli XLV to the international media at the 2016 Geneva Motor Show in Switzerland.

"Following rapid growth in the compact SUV market, we responded in 2015 by launching Tivoli, the first small SUV for SsangYong, and already the company's most successful new car. About 64,000 cars were manufactured and sold around the world last year," said Mr Choi. "Tivoli has been praised universally for meeting a wide range of customer requirements, not least its ability to carry five adults in comfort, and with one of the largest boot capacities in its sector. Now SsangYong has gone a step further by launching an extended car to provide even more carrying capacity and practicality - the XLV. This was shown as the XLV Air concept at the IAA motor show in Frankfurt last year, and from the extremely favorable feedback we received, took the decision to put the car into production. Following its international debut at Geneva, the SsangYong XLV will go on sale across Europe and around the world from May, and we forecast annual sales from the Tivoli platform including XLV will exceed 100,000 cars this year," he concluded.

Tivoli has been praised universally for meeting a number of customer requirements, not least its ability to carry five adults in comfort and with one of the largest boot capacities, while many other cars in the sector are regarded as being a 'down-size' too far.

Sharing the same platform and 2,600mm wheelbase as the Tivoli, the XLV features a lengthened body from behind the C pillar, an increase of 238mm over the standard car, expanding the load capacity to a huge 720 cubic litres of space. Meanwhile, the styling cues that distinguish Tivoli are retained, including its harmoniously fused SUV body design, sports coupé look and floating roofline.

Designed to offer a multi-role, multi-function solution to a wide range of customers, Tivoli XLV provides just the versatility needed to meet individual lifestyles: family car for lugging baby buggies and cots for small children, bikes and golf clubs for the sports-minded, and materials or business equipment during the working week.

SsangYong Tivoli XLV is offered with a choice of a Euro 6 compliant 1.6 litre petrol or 1.6 litre diesel engine, and matched with the option of a 6-speed manual transmission or 6-speed Aisin automatic, two-wheel drive or four wheel drive.

Passenger safety has been a top priority for the car, and comes with seven airbags including front, side and curtain airbags plus a driver's knee airbag, multi-function ESP (Electronic Stability Program), Active Rollover Protection, Brake Assist, Hill Start Assist and ESS (Emergency Stop Signal), a tyre pressure monitoring system and a warning reminder on all five seat belt positions.

STYLING AND DESIGN

SsangYong Tivoli XLV - derived from eXciting smart Lifestyle Vehicle, is designed as a multi-role SUV, and with its additional length extends the interior boot space to make it even more practical for family use.

Based on SsangYong's design philosophy of 'Nature Born 3 Motion', the design of the XLV is informed by the power and dynamics found in nature. Key elements are its dynamic looks, strong-looking body shape and harmoniously matching coupé-style floating roofline. This blends to achieve the sleek look of a shooting brake with strength and masculinity. The car offers an approach that is beyond mere practical transportation, but one that ensures driver comfort, safety and essentially, desirability. The XLV will add to the brand's new direction for producing contemporarily styled urban SUVs, and provide a fun driving experience.

For those seeking a practical family car, Tivoli XLV provides a large cabin where five tall adults can travel with excellent leg, shoulder and head room, plus a huge boot with 720 cubic litres of space, as well as numerous storage areas.

Exterior design

The exterior styling of the SsangYong Tivoli XLV is centred on the subtle yet dynamic character lines that flow rhythmically throughout the body. At the front, its shoulder wing design resembles the spread wings of an eagle, and neatly integrates between the radiator grille and headlights, displaying a slim yet wide look. The black D pillar is another hallmark of SsangYong's recent concept cars. While presenting a sporty and dynamic design externally, the XLV also provides class-leading space for both passengers and their luggage for greater practicality. The roofline gives the car a low and sporty look, while the angled black A pillars afford a wide and open appearance in profile.

Interior design

As with the exterior, the interior design creates a dynamic environment with the modernity of a luxurious living space which is stylish and contemporary.

While compact, the deluxe interior creates large, light and airy accommodation for five passengers, and the width of the central fascia is accentuated - again by a look inspired by the shape of a bird's outstretched wing - to maximise the sense of space.

Designed to offer driver and passengers easy connectivity to their IT devices, it brings style, practicality and plenty of useable storage areas.

An ergonomically designed D-shaped sports steering wheel affords optimised grip and connection to the car, while the leather covering gives a premium, tactile feel and is heated to warm the driver's hands in winter. Ahead of the driver are the attractive cylindrically shaped instruments which for further individualisation can have their background illumination changed to any of six different colours.

Interior space

The generous luggage space of up to 720 cubic litres is enough to carry a wide variety of different items for outdoor activities, and the second row of seats can be folded flat for the additional carrying capacity expected of a lifestyle SUV.

The second row of seats is inclined at an angle of 32.5 degrees, and the virtually flat floor ensures rear seat passenger comfort for three full size adults, even on long journeys. The rear seats also offer various folding combinations including a 60:40 split.

SsangYong Tivoli XLV provides numerous practical storage spaces around the car including the centre console which is large enough for an iPad, the glove box and inner tray, an open tray and luggage tray. There's further space to carry a 1.5 litre drinks bottle in each of the front and rear door side pockets.

In addition, the luggage area contains various convenience features, including a shopping bag or take-away food carrier hook, luggage net, and a discrete underfloor storage area.

Colours and materials

The car comes with a choice of eight exciting exterior colours, which can be further personalised through the addition of two-tone body and roof colours to ensure style and further individuality.

For the interior there's the choice of either natural beige, black and red, and can be teamed with deluxe cloth or luxurious real leather.

The red leather interior gives a sporty, confident look, and includes premium quality red leather for the seats, door trim and centre console, and harmoniously matches with the sports-style D-cut steering wheel and Titanium and red accented instrument panel.

PERFORMANCE

SsangYong Tivoli XLV is offered with a choice of either a Euro 6 compliant 1.6 litre petrol or 1.6 litre diesel engine. The 128ps e-XGi160 petrol engine provides optimised driving efficiency, while the 115ps e-XDi160 diesel engine is aimed at delivering a powerful performance with enhanced economy.

The newly developed e-XGi160 petrol engine delivers up to 128ps/6,000rpm max power with 160Nm/4,600 rpm max torque, offering optimised performance for both urban and motorway driving with excellent NVH (noise, vibration & harshness) characteristics. Both petrol and diesel engines with manual transmission come with ISG (stop/start) to meet the demand for low CO2 emission levels.

The newly developed e-XDi160 Euro 6 diesel engine produces 115ps/3,400-4,000rpm max power with 300Nm/1,500-2,500rpm and delivers a smooth, progressive and powerful driving experience, and features a fifth generation E-VGT turbocharger which maximises performance especially in the mid-low speed range so it is fun and responsive to drive.

The 1.6 litre diesel engine achieves a CO2 emission level of just 117g/km (two-wheel drive, manual transmission with Stop/Start), while the 1.6 litre petrol engine delivers 159g/km, also two-wheel drive, manual and with Stop/Start.

Two transmissions are offered. The 6-speed manual transmission is engineered to perform at a low to mid-speed range for optimal fuel efficiency and progressive acceleration for daily driving, with reduced noise and vibration thanks to the advanced gear tooth design. An Aisin 6-speed automatic transmission is also available. Already well proven, this unit is engineered to improve fuel efficiency with minimal power loss, and provides smooth, dynamic gear changing for comfortable driving and lively acceleration by way of its Quick Shift Control and optimised gear ratios.

Ride & handling

SsangYong Tivoli XLV is fitted with an electronic power steering system to reduce steering effort while assisting safe and comfortable driving by optimising steering feel, and also minimising power consumption by ensuring that the motor is only activated as required.

The Smart Steer system offers three different steering modes - Normal, Comfort and Sport, so that depending on preference, the driver can adjust the steering feel according to the driving conditions. This offers different settings for safe, comfortable steering when parking, slow speed and stop/start city driving, or high-speed motorway cruising.

For greater strength and safety, the car's engine assembly and front wheels are mounted on a sub-frame, with McPherson struts and coil springs providing great ride comfort and high speed stability.

The rear suspension is by Torsion-beam and rear mounted springs which is light yet durable and affords smooth and stable driving. The Tivoli XLV 4x4 features multi-link rear suspension for a comfortable drive on the road, and increased wheel articulation for optimum grip off-road.

An insulated double skin bulkhead between the engine bay and cabin, further minimises the ingress of engine noise.

Intelligent four-wheel drive

The SsangYong DNA is all about 4x4, and this is drawn on for the XLV which offers the option of an intelligent 4-wheel drive system. The electronically controlled on-demand system distributes power to front and rear drive shafts, and automatically adjusts to the road surface and driving conditions to optimise performance.

In normal driving, the drive system distributes all power to the front wheels to enhance fuel efficiency, and automatically adapts to 4-wheel drive in snow or wet slippery conditions, by diverting power to the rear wheels as well to ensure driving stability. For increased stability and reassurance, particularly when driving on a hill or slope, the 4-wheel drive operates with Hill Start Assist which helps by delivering power to any wheels that are spinning. And for optimised braking performance, ESP and ABS also control the 4x4 system for greater safety.

Off-road capability

The XLV offers a highly competent off-road capability. With a 167mm ground clearance, approach angle of 20.0 degrees, 20.8 degree departure angle, and 17.0 degree ramp angle, a highly effective performance off road is assured.

SAFETY

As with all Tivoli models, the XLV is designed to be extremely safe and includes numerous advanced safety features.

Built to an extremely high level of strength and safety, some 38.5% of its body construction uses AHSS (Advanced High Strength Steel). To minimise collision impact, 10 major areas on the car are strengthened using the 'Hot Press Forming' process, where the strength of the steel is increased to 1500Mpa compared to plain steel with a strength of 600Mpa.

Additional active safety features include ESP (Electronic Stability Program), which constantly checks numerous functions - vehicle speed and balance, engine power, pedal use and steering angle, and controls the engine and brakes should the driver begin to lose control due to weather conditions or sudden cornering.

The Active Roll over Protection and Brake Assist Systems prevent the vehicle from rolling over when cornering suddenly at high speed, and increases the braking force when the driver is unable to apply sufficient pressure on the brake pedal in an emergency situation. Electronic Brake-force Distribution and ABS (Anti-lock Brake System) distributes the braking force to the front and rear wheels according to the number of passengers and load weight, while the full traction control system prevents tyre slip by controlling the brakes and engine.

In addition, there are other safety features such as hill start assist and emergency stop signal which activates the hazard warning lights when braking hard in an emergency to prevent a collision.

Passive safety

To maximise passenger protection, the car is equipped with seven airbags: dual front airbags and driver knee airbag, with side & curtain airbags for side protection. There's also an advanced safety restraint system to keep passengers safely in their seats in a collision, and dual pre-tensioners which automatically tighten the seat belts to help restrain passengers during an impact.

Further safety features include large brake discs front and rear, a tyre pressure monitoring system to immediately alert the driver to any changes in tyre condition, LED daytime running lights for improved visibility, and an audible warning if any of the five seat belts remain unfastened when the seats are occupied. Projection headlights are fitted as a standard for safer driving at night.

COMFORT & CONVENIENCE

The SsangYong Tivoli XLV offers occupants all the advantages of an SUV with the comfort and convenience of a saloon car. Its wide interior space for passengers in the front and rear makes it the perfect vehicle for everyday use and leisure activity.

Semi-bucket style seats are ergonomically formed with varying degrees of firmness to provide superb comfort and postural stability while driving and especially when cornering. Premium quality materials are used throughout, and with a quality quilt stitch design on the seating for further exclusivity.

The digital-dual zone automatic air conditioning system keeps passengers feeling fresh throughout their journey by constantly monitoring the outside temperature and humidity, while front seat occupants can adjust the temperature to their individual requirements. Moreover, manual air conditioning can be adjusted to seven different levels for the driver's position.

SsangYong Tivoli XLV is equipped with the choice of a newly designed MP3 infotainment system and a 7" high-resolution screen. A USB/AUX port enables users to stream content from their external audio devices, while Bluetooth hands-free affords safe use of a mobile phone on the move. Passengers can also use their iPod and iPhone thanks to the iPod connection, and can travel with confidence using the Tom-Tom 7" navigation screen, which is linked to the rearview camera.

The latest folding key design with a remote control function is standard, while a smart key system is available as an option. A red illuminated instrument cluster is fitted as standard and a supervision cluster available as option, along with high visibility LCD displays for the trip computer, gear shift indicator, outside temperature, tyre pressure and other important information.

The XLV allows the driver to change the colour of the instrument cluster depending on their mood with a choice of six colours (red, blue, yellow, sky blue, white and black). There is also interior mood lighting at the base of the door trim and central fascia to create a calming environment at night.

SsangYong Tivoli XLV is equipped with parking sensors front and rear to aid safe and convenient parking, and additional standard convenience features include one-touch triple indicator direction signaling, one-touch automatic windscreen wash/wipe, cruise control (speeds can be set between 36-150km/h), rain sensing wipers, automatic headlight activation, and an electrochromic interior rearview mirror.

Made in Korea

The SsangYong Tivoli and Tivoli XLV are manufactured in South Korea by SsangYong Motor, which is 73 per cent owned by the Indian engineering conglomerate Mahindra & Mahindra. Established in 1954, SsangYong is Korea's oldest vehicle manufacturer and only 4x4 and SUV specialist producer.
