Peugeot's engineers and designers have conceived and designed a grand dynamic estate car, with a low, classy and sporty allure. Taking the Peugeot i-Cockpit from the hatchback version, the new Peugeot 308 SW presents an innovative interior, resolutely modern and refined. Benefitting from the high flexibility of the new EMP2 platform, the new Peugeot 308 SW makes the most of its generous dimensions to provide a level of interior spaciousness and boot volume among the best in the segment. The boot also benefits from exemplary functionality and modularity.
Virtuous design (reduced weight, the use of innovative materials) and the use of new economical and efficient engines allows the Peugeot 308 SW to claim benchmark fuel consumption and emissions figures while also delivering unprecedented driving enjoyment for an estate car. The extensive range of equipment and high level of quality place the new Peugeot 308 SW among the best in its segment, supporting the ambitions for the brand and its move up-market.
A revitalised estate market in the C segment
Peugeot has been present in the C estate segment, where the new Peugeot 308 SW competes, for decades. Since the arrival of the 304 estate in 1969, every generation of the 300 series has included a successful estate variant.
The proportion of estates in the C segment is stable having has represented 10% of segment in Europe for many years. The appearance and then increased importance of crossovers and MPVs in the segment has not affected the proportion of estates.
Customers for estates are younger, more dynamic and more male than in general for the C segment. They are represented by working couples, with or without children, who use their vehicle intensively (they cover the highest mileages in the segment). They require considerable versatility in use without having to make any sacrifices in the comfort, driving enjoyment and styling of their vehicle.
It is in this context that the Peugeot 308 SW meets the expectations of these customers by concentrating on the basic requirements for this segment in four key areas: design, efficiency (including functionality), driving experience and quality.
A fluid and dynamic design
As with the hatchback, Peugeot's designers wanted to give preference to simplicity, balance and fluidity in the style. For the new Peugeot 308 SW, no pointless features, no ostentatious aggressiveness but rather an importance placed on quality in the way that materials and finishers are handled.
The front end of the new Peugeot 308 SW shares its character with the hatchback. So there is a grille framed in chrome and headlamps handled with great finesse to retain the brand's expressive and emblematic feline look. The Full LED technology (31 LEDs per headlamp), fitted as standard on the upper trim levels, provides a technological and distinctive lighting signature.
The profile of the Peugeot 308 SW is fluid and slender. Benefiting from the extended wheelbase (+11 cm compared to the hatchback) and rear overhang (+22 cm compared to the hatchback), the new Peugeot 308 SW clearly takes its place among the most dynamic and balanced estates in the segment.
The fluid profile is highlighted by a superb chrome window finisher surrounding the entire lateral glazed area. For the large rear quarter light, this finisher is in one piece and with varying crosssection. This technical and stylistic feat is usually found only on some vehicles from the segments above and underlines the refined dynamism in its profile.
Another important aspect, the absence of a quarter light in the rear doors emphasises and improves the appearance of the lateral glazed area.
The drop in the roof line, the angle formed at the back with the rear screen strengthens further the dynamism of the profile. Finally, the perfect integration of the aluminium longitudinal roof bars, discrete and elegant, completed the positioning of the new Peugeot 308 SW in the very exclusive world of exceptional estate cars.
The rear end, wide and slender, contributes towards the sporty impression of the new Peugeot 308 SW. The rear lamps, flowing round from the sides as on the hatchback, adopt an unusual and very technological C-form lighting signature through the use of 42 opalescent LEDs. With three more LEDs in each lamp unit for the brake lamp function, there are no less than 48 LEDs in the rear lamps. This signature, the shape of which enhances the vehicle's posture, recalls those on the 508 SW and 508 RXH, placing the new Peugeot 308 SW among the brand's family of great estate cars.
The drop in the roof line, the handling of the rear spoiler, the perfect integration of the 3rd brake lamp, taken from the 508 SW, the flush roof bars as far apart as possible, all strengthen the impression of width on the new Peugeot 308 SW.
A modern and bright interior
The interior design of the new Peugeot 308 SW is astonishingly pure, modern and technological.
It is based on an innovative concept for the instruments and controls: the Peugeot i-Cockpit. It is made up of four elements : a compact steering wheel for intense dynamic sensations, a head-up instrument panel so that information can be read without taking your eyes off the road, an enhancing tall centre console and a large 9.7" touch screen for an intuitive drive.
The quality of materials, the textiles used, the rigour of assembly and construction, have all been defined to place the new Peugeot 308 SW in the premium world. So the dashboard is fully padded, the steering wheel is trimmed with full grain leather from the 2nd trim level and the gloss black and satin chrome inserts are found throughout the cabin in areas used by the customer.
The near absence of buttons combined with the use of high quality materials, brings a purity unprecedented in the market.
Finally, the generous glazed areas and the huge 1.69 m2 glass sunroof bathe the Peugeot 308 SW's cabin in light. The integration of the longitudinal roof bars positioned over the body sides allows this to be optimised. This sunroof can be fully covered with its electric blind.
A successful cabin arrangement
As with the hatchback, the new Peugeot 308 SW uses the PSA Group's new EMP2 platform. This "Efficient Modular Platform" allows considerable flexibility in configuration and settings, particularly for length. So the wheelbase is extended by two notches compared to the hatchback, making another 11 cm, used entirely for space at the rear, particularly for knee room, and for the boot volume. Access to the rear seats is optimised by the opening of the wider rear doors and by moving the rear seats back by 29mm.
The rear overhang is extended by 22 cm compared to the hatchback, allowing perfect arrangement of the rear, shared between:
Transformed in this way, the interior space gives its occupants the feeling of comfort and well-being.
A compact and spacious estate
With a length of 4585 mm, width of 1804 mm and height of 1471 mm, the new Peugeot 308 SW offers ideal dimensions to allow it to meet the fundamental expectations of estate customers in the segment, particularly as regards the spaciousness of the interior and the volume of the boot.
The new Peugeot 308 SW's generous dimensions (though still normal for the segment) allow it to offer boot figures among the best on the market. The boot volume below the parcel shelf is remarkable at 610 dm3 VDA 210 (equal to 660 litres) made up of:
When the space-saver spare wheel - available as an option - is present, the volume below the floor is reduced by 47 dm3 VDA.
A perfectly flat boot in no time
For easy and intuitive use, the new Peugeot 308 SW is fitted as standard with "Magic Flat" rear seats. This system allows instant folding of both parts of the rear seat by operating two controls easily accessible on the sides of the boot. Thanks to the automatic lowering of the rear seat cushions, the "magic" result is that a flat floor is obtained providing a total volume of 1660 dm3 VDA 214, made up of:
The success of this arrangement is not only in the volumes. The new Peugeot 308 SW benefits from a remarkably practical and useable boot:
Latest generation engines with high performance, meeting the strictest emissions standards
From launch, the new Peugeot 308 SW benefits from a range of Euro 6 petrol and Diesel engines of the latest generation, engines that are efficient and completely unprecedented. For petrol, power outputs are between 130 and 155 hp with CO2 emissions from 109g/km. The Diesel range goes from 92 to 150 hp with remarkably contained CO2 emissions that do not exceed 111 g/km. But in particular, the new BlueHDi 1.6 litre 120 hp version associated with a six-speed manual gearbox has fuel consumption on the combined cycle of only 3.2 l/100km, equal to CO2 emissions of 85g/km. This is a record in the segment.
These efficient engines can be associated with Ultra Low Rolling Resistance tyres developed in an exclusive partnership with Michelin. these new generation tyres give savings in CO2 emissions of 3 g/km on average, with reduced braking distances on wet roads and wear rates identical to standard tyres .They will be fitted to more than a third of models.
From July 2014, the range available will be rounded off with a PureTech 3-cylinder110 hp turbo petrol version as well as a new six-speed automatic gearbox on the 130 hp petrol version.
The new PureTech three-cylinder turbo petrol engine
The new Peugeot 308 SW e-THP 1.2 litre 130 hp introduces the PureTech three-cylinder petrol engine, in its turbocharged version associated with a six-speed manual gearbox. Modular and compact, clean and powerful, this engine is a distillation of efficiency and the latest technology. With high pressure direct injection (200 bar) and the new generation high efficiency turbocharger (running at 240,000 rpm) it provides driveability among the best in the market, from the lowest engine speeds. As the maximum torque of 230 Nm is obtained at 1750 rpm, it delivers the best low speed torque/maximum power compromise in the market. In addition 95 % of the torque is available between 1500 and 3500 rpm, promising optimum operation in all circumstances.
Its compact dimensions, reduced weight and innovative low friction materials are determining aspects in the virtuous search for performance and economic operation, with no compromise made on reliability and durability. For equivalent power and driveability, this technological advance allows fuel consumption and CO2 emissions to be reduced by 21%.
With this new arrival to the family of PureTech three-cylinder petrol engines, the brand demonstrates that downsizing can be a way of improving performance and driving sensations.
BlueHDi technology used on a new range of Diesel engines
BlueHDi is the name given to the brand's Euro 6 Diesel engines. Exclusively associating SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction) and a particulate filter with additive for the Euro 6 Diesel emissions, the BlueHDi technology allows NOx emissions to be drastically reduced by up to 90% and CO2 emissions and fuel consumption to be optimised, while still eliminating 99.9 % of particulates.
Three BlueHDi engines will be available at launch. The BlueHDi 1.6 litre 100 (coupled to a manual 5-speed gearbox) and the BlueHDi 1.6 litre 120 (with six-speed manual gearbox) are topped off in the range by the BlueHDi 2.0 litre 150, available with six-speed manual or six-speed automatic gearbox.
Type-approved with CO2 emissions of 85g/km, the BlueHDi 1.6 litre 120 is a real technological advance, allowing the virtuous alliance of performance and low fuel consumption. With 120 hp, and maximum torque of 300 Nm from 1750 rpm, this very low fuel consumption version is a true "core of the range" version with remarkable driveability. Multi-role and efficient, it has no special restriction on its towing ability.
The new BlueHDi 2.0 litre 150 engine associates high performance with particularly well contained emissions. With a maximum torque of 370 Nm at 2000 rpm and great flexibility in use, on the new Peugeot 308 SW with a six-speed manual gearbox, it returns CO2 emissions from 99g/km.
This BlueHDi 2.0 litre 150 engine can also be associated with a 3rd generation AISIN six-speed automatic gearbox. This new automatic gearbox uses Quickshift technology, which combines faster gear changes with smoothness and driving pleasure of the highest level. Its design results in a drastic reduction in CO2 emissions. The difference in emissions compared to manual gearbox is brought down to 5g/km (for a given tyre fitment) making this version extremely well placed in terms of driving pleasure and fuel consumption.
The lightest and most efficient estate in the segment
As with the hatchback, the new Peugeot 308 SW offers a weight reduction of 140 kg. As a result, for an equivalent engine and equipment, it is the lightest vehicle in the segment. This results from two factors: the use of the new EMP2 platform and the choice of innovative technical solutions included in the new Peugeot 308 SW.
The new EMP2 platform makes possible a drastic weight reduction of 70 kg made up as follows:
The innovative technical design and the choice of lighter materials allow a further reduction of 70 kg. The weight of each part has been optimised while still maintaining the full capability of the part. So the bonnet and front wings are made of aluminium. This technological choice is usually reserved for premium vehicles.
The use of high strength steels, innovative materials or the redefinition of parts has allows considerable weight reductions to be achieved. As with the hatchback, the new design for the front and rear seat frames gives reduction of more than 10 kg. The tailgate is thermo-plastic, a composite material that is both light and rigid, reducing the weight of the tailgate by 4 kg compared to the same tailgate made in the conventional way.
Efficient aerodynamics
The fluid lines and low width and height of the new Peugeot 308 SW immediately suggest good aerodynamic performance, a sure sign of reduced fuel consumption and CO2 emissions. Aerodynamic performance, as with weight, is a key factor in reducing the environmental footprint of a vehicle.
For this, the repositioning of major units and the reduced height of the new Peugeot 308 SW allow the centre of gravity to be lowered by de 20mm compared to its predecessor. The vehicle's penetration through air is improved with a remarkable Cx figure of 0.28 and SCx from 0.64 m2. This latter value positions the aerodynamic performance of the new Peugeot 308 SW among the best in the estate market, whatever the segment.
Peugeot i-Cockpit, the name for the Peugeot instruments and controls
The new Peugeot 308 SW takes the Peugeot i-Cockpit from the 308 hatchback. Its compact steering wheel, head-up instruments, large 9.7" touch screen and tall centre console give it a unique bias in the automobile world, and becomes symbolic of Peugeot interiors.
Conceived to deliver a sensory and intuitive driving experience, the Peugeot i-Cockpit offers sensations of a completely new kind. Acclaimed by the public, the press and customers alike, it makes familiarisation with the new Peugeot 308 simple and obvious.
The compact dimensions of the steering wheel (351 mm x 329 mm) make the vehicle easy to handle and provides enhanced driving sensations. Manoeuvres in town are achieved with great ease thanks to the precise and informative electric power steering.
Perfectly integrated into the dashboard, the instrument panel has been designed like a high precision technological object. The recesses for the dials are pulled out wide and the symmetrical rotation of the needles facilitates reading of the information arranged either side of the compact wheel. This arrangement allows the driver's attention to be drawn to the top of the instrument panel, without have to take their eyes off the road. The red needles, finely chiselled, are reminiscent of precision watch making. On the top end trim levels, they are finished in chrome, like the surrounds for the speedometer and rev counter. The dials have specific graduations and a black panel function that masks the warning lamps and the numbers when stationary.
The large 9.7" touch screen brings the controls together in one place. It allows operation of the following systems: air conditioning, driving assistance systems, multimedia, navigation, telephone, Peugeot Connect Apps, and vehicle settings. Seven buttons giving direct access to functions make operation of the touch screen obvious. For each system, the information is presented on two easily accessible pages.
Ride and handling of the highest quality
The driving experience offered by the new Peugeot 308 SW is based on Peugeot's historic knowhow with suspension and the intrinsic qualities of the new EMP2 platform.
The centre of gravity lowered by 20 mm does not only favour the aerodynamics of the vehicle, but also assures better body rigidity. The new platform brings effective suspension components (Pseudo MacPherson at the front and deformable beam at the rear) of reduced weight. Optimisation of the running gear allows the turning radius to be reduced by 20 cm (11.2 m between kerbs) compared to its predecessor. At the rear, the innovative installation of the dampers over the arms improves performance, for a better ride and handling. In addition, the handling when laden is remarkable: the lowering of the centre of gravity and the longer wheelbase improves weight distribution without affecting the vehicle's dynamic qualities.
The variable electric power steering is both precise and informative. Combined with the compact steering wheel, it makes the vehicle very easy to handle when manoeuvring in town.
The brake discs - ventilated at the front and with dimensions up to 304 x 28 mm - are optimised for weight and resistance to friction losses, while being well dimensioned throughout the range. The technology associated with the braking system allows the new Peugeot 308 SW to benefit from an electric parking brake (using motorised brake calipers), ESP, sophisticated intelligent traction control and Hill Start Assist, and this from level 2.
Taken as a whole - innovative design, reduced weight, lower centre of gravity, electric power steering, compact steering wheel, efficient brakes and tyres - associated with Peugeot's knowhow on running gear, this gives the new Peugeot 308 SW a ride and handling worthy of a sedan or hatchback. This arrangement, unique in the estate car world, achieves the "tour de force" of combining volume and spaciousness with agility, ride comfort with road holding of the highest level.
Many driving assistance systems for greater safety and comfort
To provide an even more comfortable and sure drive, the new Peugeot 308 SW is available with several driving assistance systems. As on the hatchback, the Driver Assistance Pack is available as an option, incorporating a radar at the front of the vehicle, used for the operation of three systems:
For the comfort and safety of all, the new Peugeot 308 SW can be fitted with many other systems, either as standard or an option: blind spot monitoring, electric parking brake, reversing camera using the large colour screen, keyless entry and starting.
Park Assist
This active parking assistance system of the latest generation makes it possible not only to automatically park in (and exit from) a parallel parking space but also in a parking bay. To do this, the system detects a parking space and then operates the steering while the driver looks after the accelerator, brakes, gears and clutch (with a manual gearbox). The system provides the driver with visual and audible information during the manoeuvre, so as to make the phases of entry into and exit from the parking space perfectly safe. Nevertheless, if desired the driver can take back control of the steering at any point, by simply grasping the steering wheel.
Available as an option from level 3, Park Assist is coupled with the blind spot monitoring system.
Driver Sport Pack
Playing on the emotion register, one of the Peugeot brand's principal values, this new system will delight enthusiasts of dynamic driving. Switchable by the driver using an additional "Sport" button on the centre console (alongside the electric parking brake control), this system goes beyond the normal driving sensations by appealing directly to the senses.
By switching on the Driver Sport Pack, the driver makes the following changes:
So this resolutely dynamic pack stimulates all of the driver's senses, hearing, touch and vision, enhancing their emotions at the wheel. At the launch of the new Peugeot 308 SW, the Driver Sport Pack will be available as an option from level 3 on the e-THP 1.2 litre 130 and BlueHDi 2.0 litre 150 engines with manual transmission (the same as for the hatchback).
Ever greater connectivity
Connectivity on the new Peugeot 308 SW is modern and varied. Based on mobile internet technology, the new Peugeot 308 SW is available with a new generation of connected services: Peugeot Connect Apps. Thanks to the easy to use and large touch screen, the applications developed are easy to access and intuitive in use. The driver is provided with useful information in real time that simplifies day to day travelling : free parking spaces nearby, fuel prices at filling stations nearby, traffic information, weather, tourist information from the Michelin guides (red guide and green guide), directory, as well as the Coyote application (available according to country).
Customers for Peugeot Connect Apps have access to the Apps store where all of the applications available can be found. This optional offer of services is being rolled out and will be available in 13 countries of Europe through an annual subscription. The Plug&Play 3G key used to activate Peugeot Connect Apps is plugged into the USB port located in the glove box of the new Peugeot 308 SW.
The new Peugeot 308 SW introduces the mobile version of the 'MyPeugeot' application (customer's mobile personal space, available according to country), allowing the information from the vehicle (location, mileage, fuel consumption, illumination of warning lamps, etc) to be sent to the customer's Smartphone. This data allows useful services to be offered, such as automatic guidance for the driver on foot, towards the location of the vehicle or a final destination, alerts for servicing or faults, statistics on journeys, etc.
Finally, the new 'Scan My Peugeot' Smartphone application gives the customer easy access to the digital version of the handbook for the new Peugeot 308 SW. Using image recognition technology, the driver has simply to photograph a part of the vehicle with their Smartphone to instantly receive an explanation of the operation of a system or the significance of a warning lamp.
Tangible perceived quality down to the smallest detail
For the handling of quality on the new Peugeot 308 SW the same approach was adopted as for the hatchback: that of having the very best level of exterior and interior perceived quality. This quality imperative guided Peugeot's development departments from the very start of the project, from the first sketches. It is expressed at every level and in the smallest detail: the treatment of the body and cabin, the choice of materials, the assembly of parts, acoustic treatment and durability.
So the exterior perceived quality of the new Peugeot 308 SW is confirmed by the care applied in the following areas (among others):
Every care has also been taken over the interior perceived quality:
The quality can be seen, felt and also heard. The acoustics on board the new Peugeot 308 SW have also been optimised. So the doors close with a solid thud emphasising their quality.
Quality in design with no compromise over safety
As with the hatchback, the new Peugeot 308 SW has 5 stars in the Euro NCAP tests, the highest score possible. The tests carried out by the independent Euro NCAP organisation were done to the new more severe protocol for determining results. With individual scores of 5 stars in all 4 categories (adult protection, children, pedestrians and assistance systems), the new Peugeot 308 SW confirms its high safety levels, both for its occupants and for pedestrians.
Quality in service at the level of the best in the segment
The aim of all this work on quality is to ensure that the new Peugeot 308 SW's quality when new is maintained when in service with the customer.
This involves avoiding the premature aging in the appearance of parts and equipment, as well as avoiding the future arrival of parasitic noise or vibration.
The new Peugeot 308 SW has successfully passed many tests of its quality in service, including: 2.5 million kilometres of test driving covered before launch, 2,500 hours on test beds, 250,000 temperature cycle tests, 4.3 million presses on the touch screen without failure, etc.
The quality of design and the care in the production of the new Peugeot 308 SW gives its occupants a feeling of safety and durability, promising great pleasure on board and a high level of satisfaction in use.
