Opel Combo

Now in its third generation, the Opel Combo sets new standards in terms of its diversity of models and boasts "Best in Class" results in terms of functionality and utility, positioning it as a leader of the European Van-B segment. With its diversity of talents, the new Combo is the perfect way to round off Opel's product spectrum in the area of light cargo vans as well as leisure and family vehicles.

The all-rounder which is available in different body styles is based on the Fiat Doblo ("International Van of the Year 2011") of Opel's cooperation partner. The aim of this strategic alliance is to drive Opel's growth in the area of commercial vehicles. Alongside its larger stable mates, the Vivaro (D-Segment/up to 2.9 t) and the Movano (E-Segment/up to 4.5 t), the new Opel Combo provides the basis for a highly competitive offering that now consists of three model ranges. This trio will strengthen Opel's commercial vehicle segment and make it one of the central pillars of the brand.

Growth in the European Van-B segment is predicted to be one million units until the year 2015. 62 percent of all Combo sales are predicted to be for the Cargo van variant, 38 percent for the passenger "Tour" variant.

Opel has been selling the Combo since 1985 and the current generation has been around since 2001. The versatile concept of a diverse leisure, family and commercial vehicle has been very popular. Even during the final phase of its lifecycle, the predecessor of the new Opel Combo was still in the top three of its segment in many European markets.

Body & Design

The Opel Combo sets new standards in terms of its functionality, modern technology, great diversity of models and is a strong player in the European Van-B segment. The spectrum of models comprises two basic types of bodywork: those with short and long wheel bases. Both types are available as transporter versions with a panel van layout, a partially or fully glazed body (Cargo), as well as a five or seven seat passenger variant (Tour). Vehicles with short wheel bases are also available with high roofs.

Access to the loading bay of the Cargo panel van is via a pair of asymmetrical back doors which can either be with or without glazing. Vehicles with the standard roof configuration can be optionally fitted with a tailgate with a window. The transporter versions can also be optionally equipped with sliding doors. Fully glazed Tour models have tailgates and can also be ordered with asymmetrical back doors with windows . All Tour models have five seats in their standard configuration. However, short wheel base Tour versions can be upgraded to seven seats.

Top of the class for loading capacities

The Opel Combo with the long wheel base leads several segments in terms of capacity and payload.

Depending on the model variant, the vehicle boasts an impressive set of segment leading stats:

  • Longest wheel base in segment (3,105 mm)
  • Biggest payload in segment up to 1 ton (including driver)
  • Largest load capacity in segment with up to 4.6m3 in volume
  • Biggest rear axle load in segment with 1,450 kilograms
  • Longest maximum load length (3,400 mm) and height (1,550 mm) in segment
  • Largest back door opening in segment (height/width: 1,455/1,231 mm)
  • Lowest loading bay threshold in segment (545 mm)

Even in with its short wheel base, the Opel Combo cargo offers up to 3.8 m3 in space (standard roof) or 4.4 m3 (high roof). The maximum loading length is 1,820 mm. The effective loading length of the long wheel base model is 2,170 mm and can take up to 4.6 m3 of freight. This gives it a leadership status in its segment. The Opel Combo cargo with foldable front passenger seats even boasts an effective loading length of 3,055 mm (short wheel base) or 3,400 mm (long wheel base).

The dimensions of the loading bay facilitate the transportation of particularly bulky goods. The width of the loading bay, if measured between the wheel arches, is 1,230 mm. From wall to wall it is 1,714 mm. The height of the interior space is 1,305 mm with a standard roof or 1,550 mm in the high roof version. The short wheel variants can additionally be fitted with a roof flap, allowing the transportation of bulky items such as ladders, pipes etc.

Another exemplary feature of the Opel Combo's practical strengths is the easy access to the loading bay. The bay threshold is just 545 mm which makes the loading process easier, as does the asymmetrical back doors. The dimensions of the door are a width of 1,231 mm (in its opened state) and a height of 1,250 mm (or 1,455 mm in the case of the high roof option). Even euro pallets can be loaded. The tailgate variant is equally user friendly with a width of 1,231 mm in its opened state and a height of 1,166 mm. If the sliding doors are opened, goods can be comfortably placed inside the bay, thanks to a width of 700 mm and a height of 1,175 mm.

Even in its basic form the Opel Combo can handle payloads of 750 kilograms including the driver. However, depending on the engine type even a maximum of 1,000 kilograms are possible. The Combo is also an excellent workhorse. It can easily tow weights of between 1,000 and 1,500 kilograms.

Tour passenger version with five or seven seats

The Opel Combo Tour has a multitude of talents, be it with a standard roof, with a short or long wheel base, sliding doors, a tailgate or asymmetrical back doors. It performs equally well as a private family or leisure vehicle and commercial vehicle.

Its loading bay is designed to carry tools and goods offers a generous capacity of between 800 and 3,200 liters in the short version and 1,050 and 4,000 liters in the long version, as well as up to 800 kilograms of maximum payload. In the long wheel base version, the Combo Tour has full glazing and falls into the EU category N1 of vehicles registered for commercial use. The passengers and the loading bay can be separated by an optional separating wall.

The Opel Combo passenger variant Tour offers lots of space, comfort and a high degree of functionality, both as a short wheel base version (with standard and high roof) and with the optionally available seven seats. The interior of the loading bay is well equipped. The floor has been covered in a carpet and it meets the highest standards in terms of its capacity. Depending on the roof version and seat configuration the maximum payloads range between 600 to 900 kilograms. The Combo Tour is perfectly appointed to deal with a crowd of passengers or big shopping trips.

Design: Multitude of striking attributes

The design of the new Opel Combo combines functionality with a light touch. The head lights are particularly striking with their clear glass and their integrated daytime running lights. This combined with the prominent Opel lightening logo adds up to a distinctive Opel front. The Combo comes across as a robust character, not least because of its solid base frame with well-defined bumpers, flanks and wheel arches. The cabin of the passenger car variant is light and airy because of the generously proportioned windows, which also enable excellent visibility.

The design principle of "Form follows function" is expressed with the flat hood, the steep angle of the front windscreen and the generous proportions of the panoramic wing mirrors, complete with integrated direction indicators and a low line in the rear window. All these features give the driver a clear view of the vehicle's surroundings and the traffic flow. The tail light sits high up and is well exposed. This means it is easily visible for traffic at the rear and is protected from any possible damage.

Interior & Equipment

The cabin of the new Opel Combo is brimming with practical and user friendly features. Ergonomic and accessible controls create a harmonious feel inside the cabin. The seats are designed mainly with the commercial user in mind who in many cases is likely to spend a large portion of the working day behind the wheel or needs easy access in and out of the vehicle The distinctive contours of the seat cushions and backrests of the driver as well as front passenger seats help to maintain a good body posture. Well-proportioned heating and ventilation nozzles contribute to a healthy interior climate.

The comfort-oriented passenger versions, which are designed to get the most out of everyday use, contain equipment of the highest of standards. In this spirit, the colors of the newly developed seat covers (Enjoy, Cosmo) match the instrument panel. This helps create a welcoming atmosphere in the cabin and emphasizes the solid and durable nature of the cabin interior. The layout of the cabin comes across as well thought-out and practical because of a number of well-placed and functional storage compartments and shelves as well as the availability of up to seven seats (third row seats removable) and not least the 60 - 40 split ratio of the foldable rear bench.

Three trim levels and wide range of accessories

The new Opel Combo satisfies a wide range of diverse customer needs and equipment requirements. The Tour version offers three trim levels: "Essentia", "Enjoy" and "Cosmo". The Combo Cargo panel van variant is only available in the "Essentia" trim but comes with a comprehensive array of optional extras and accessories.

Its standard kit includes:

  • Electric Power Steering
  • Adjustable steering column (longitudinal and tilt)
  • Electric front windows
  • Central locking
  • Airbag on driver side
  • ABS with electronic brake-force distribution (EBD)
  • 12-volt power socket in the dashboard
  • Solid-steel cargo space partition
  • Tire repair kit

In the five-seat passenger Tour variant which can be ordered with a short or long wheel, the "Essentia" trim also includes two sliding doors on the side, a tailgate (instead of an asymmetrical rear door), an additional 12-volt outlet in the cargo compartment, a cargo cover and wheel covers. In the long wheel version, 16-inch wheels are available.

Depending on the model, additional options include a four-way adjustable driver seat with lumbar support and armrest, front seats with heating, additional storage and special fixtures, air conditioning, infotainment and navigation systems, Aux-in inputs for external electronic devices, Bluetooth ™ connectivity for mobile phones, an integrated speakerphone, a PVC loading bay cover, a sound-insulated cargo space divider, a holder for ladders in the loading bay and various other equipment packages.

Tour "Enjoy", "Cosmo" and "Essentia"

The Opel Combo Tour which is suitable for passenger transport is available in three trim levels: "Essentia", "Enjoy" and "Cosmo". "Enjoy" goes beyond the "Essentia" configuration by offering the customer an instrument panel in black or grey, seat covers in grey or red, textile parts (seats, door panels) in red, or a textured surface in grey and central locking with remote control.

The "Cosmo" trim package additionally provides an instrument panel in beige or black, bumpers and door mirrors to match the body color, blue or walnut colored covers, a four-way adjustable driver seat with lumbar support and armrest, electric rear windows, front side airbags for the head and chest, a height-adjustable luggage cover which can accommodate up to 70 kilograms in capacity and an outside temperature display.

Engines & Powertrains

The new Opel Combo offers a diverse and competitive spectrum of powertrains, including four diesel engines, one gasoline unit and a GNC version (Compressed Natural Gas) which operates as a dual fuel unit with gasoline.

All engines are available with the particularly fuel efficient and environmentally sound ecoFLEX technology. All of them come complete with Start/Stop, apart from the CNG version. The robustness and reliability of the Combo engines is further underscored by the long intervals between services. In the case of the gasoline and the CNG versions, only every 30,000 kilometers a service is recommended. However, the diesel models only need a service every 35,000 kilometers.

Powerful and fuel efficient CDTI engines

The diesel engines of the new Opel Combo possess the latest Common-Rail technology with a turbo charger and a diesel particle filter. Even the 1.3 CDTI 66kW/90 hp basic diesel engine with a five-speed manual transmission, delivers torque of 200 Nm at 1.500 rpm. This gives it extra power even at low engine speeds. The optional ecoFLEX versions that come complete with Start/Stop, are capable of fuel consumption and CO2 emissions of between 4.8 and 4.9 liters per 100 kilometers or between 126g/km and 129g/km respectively, depending on the body version, trim and roof height. This means the engines are performing at the top end of the Van-B segment within their displacement categories.

One notch above the basic engine is the 66kW/90 hp 1.6 CDTI version, which is either available as a manual six speed transmission in its standard version or optionally available as a five speed easytronic transmission. In the manual version, the engine is capable of generating maximum torque of 290 Nm. In the case of the easytronic transmission up to 200 Nm at 1.500 rpm are available. The fuel consumption and CO2 data demonstrate that an effective combination of high performance, environmental awareness and efficiency is possible. Depending on the body version, trim and roof height, a conventional engine that has been fitted with the optional Start/Stop technology uses between 5.2 and 5.6 liters per 100 km. That is equivalent to a CO2 emissions range of between 136 and 148g/km. In the case of the easytronic transmission, the fuel consumption is between 5.0 and 5.5 liters (CO2 emissions 130 to 147 g/km).

The next level on the performance scale is the 1.6 CDTI with 77kW/105 hp and a solid torque of 290 Nm at 1,500 rpm. This powertrain also passes on the power to the wheels via a six-speed manual transmission. It offers an attractive mix of performance and efficiency. Depending on the model and version, the fuel consumption in the ecoFLEX variants lies between 5.2 and 5.6 liters per 100 kilometers, equivalent to between 136 and 148g/km in CO2 emissions.

The 2.0 CDTI engine with 99kW/135 hp sits at the top of the diesel powertrain spectrum of the Combo. It is equipped with a six speed manual transmission which develops a maximum torque of 320 Nm at 1,500 rpm, making it a superior and powerful unit. In this case, the noticeable fuel economy speaks for itself: the top of the range diesel in its ecoFLEX form only uses between 5.6 and 6 liters of fuel for a hundred kilometers. That is equivalent to 148 and 157 g/km in CO2 emissions.

Smooth and sprightly 1.4 liter gasoline engine

Customers who appreciate the qualities of a smooth 1.4 liter engine will not be disappointed with the Combo. The 70kW/95 hp version available in the Opel Combo delivers maximum torque of 127 Nm at 4.500 rpm. The four-cylinder, five-speed transmission is sprightly in nature while offering environmental awareness and efficiency. In the case that the vehicles are fitted with Start/Stop, fuel consumption which depends on the body type, the trim and the roof height, lies between 7.0 and 7.4 liters of super-grade gasoline per 100 kilometers, equivalent to 163 to 171 CO2 (combined standard cycle).

1.4 CNG ecoFLEX: consistently economical and environmentally friendly

The engine variant of the CNG version geared towards dual fuel usage of gasoline and natural gas is particularly suited to the environment and efficiency. Starting with the 1.4 CNG ecoFLEX version, the Opel Combo (short wheel base) holds a 22 liter gasoline and 4 CNG cylinders with a total volume of 95 liters. In the case of the long wheelbase the figure is 130 liters with a fifth optional gas cylinder. This boosts the maximum range from 625 to 750 kilometers.

The CNG version boasts a powerful performance. It provides the driver with 88kW/120 hp and can deliver a maximum of 206 Nm at 2,000 rpm. The combined standard results for the vehicle in terms of fuel consumption and CO2 emissions once again prove how quiet and efficient this ecoFLEX engine operates: In the pure CNG mode it consumes 7.5 m3 (4.9 kg ) per 100 kilometers (134g/km CO2). In the gasoline mode it uses 7.4 liters per 100 kilometers (173 g/km CO2).

Chassis & Safety

Similar to the areas of space and flexibility, the new Opel/Vauxhall Combo is a leader in its segment when it comes to handling on the road and safety features.

Standard features: Bi-link rear suspension, driver air bag and ABS

The innovative and independent Bi-link rear suspension delivers optimum comfort and easy handling. It is compact and provides a low load height. Thanks to the modularity of its components it can be equipped specifically according to the characteristic and the intended use of the vehicle. In combination with the MacPherson strut on the front axle, the Bi-link creates a dynamic sedan feel on the road, regardless of how big the vehicle load is. It does this by striking balance between highly developed safety reserves, agility and a smooth suspension. The compact dimensions and kinematic characteristics of the rear axle link enable a full loading width of 1.23 meters between the wheel arches and weights of up 1,450 kilograms on the rear axle.

State-of-the art technologies aimed at boosting active and passive safety underscore the high standards of the new Combo. The basic "Essentia" variant of the Cargo panel van and the passenger Tour variant are all equipped with a driver air bag, while the ABS comes complete with electronic brake distribution (EBD). The spring rates of the Opel Combo Tour have been adjusted to ensure maximum comfort. Standard features in the Tour include a front passenger air bag. Meanwhile, in the top of the range "Cosmo" trim level, the vehicle contains side (head and thorax) airbags. Another standard piece of kit is the ISOFIX child seat fixation which can be attached to the front passenger seat and the outer seats of the second row (Tour).

Optional ESP with brake assist, anti-slip regulator and Hill Holder

Customers can chose from further safety options depending on their requirements. Head and shoulder air bags are available in the front row (Tour), as well as an anti-slip regulator for maximum traction in slippery conditions plus the electronic stability program (ESP) that controls vehicle stability in the event of tire grip loss.

The ESP range also includes brake assist that gives the driver maximum braking pressure reserves in case of sudden or hard braking maneuvers. The Hill Holder system is a further feature attached to the ESP. The Hill Holder facilitates hill starts. It is activated after the brake pedal is released and then maintains the brake pressure for a short while so that the vehicle can move forwards or backwards on hills without rolling.
