Kia Ceed SW

Kia's all-European cee'd family has become the first range to be fitted with the company's advanced new powertrains, which bring reductions of up to 25 per cent in fuel consumption and CO2 emissions.

There are three new turbocharged engines - two petrol units and one diesel - plus a seven-speed double-clutch (7-DCT) automatic transmission for use in conjunction with the new diesel.

They form part of a simultaneous upgrade of all three cee'd body styles - the five-door cee'd, three-door pro_cee'd and cee'd Sportswagon. First deliveries will be arriving in UK dealerships on October 1, 2015, with prices for the revised models with new engines starting at £16,795.

New 1.0-litre ecoTurbo petrol engines

The two new petrol engines are the 1.0-litre, three-cylinder, direct-injection T-GDi (ecoTurbo) units announced at the Geneva Motor Show earlier this year and designed to meet Kia's stringent internal targets for reducing fuel consumption and emissions. Kia intends to downsize 70 per cent of its internal combustion engines in the next few years. The T-GDi units are eventually destined to be used in a number of models, but make their debuts in the cee'd family.

There are two versions, delivering 98 or 118bhp, for the cee'd and pro_cee'd, while the Sportswagon is available with the higher-powered unit. Both develop 172Nm of torque over a wide range from 1,500rpm to 4,000rpm, ensuring outstanding driving flexibility

They are 998cc engines developed in-house at Kia's Namyang research and development facility in Korea, and have been engineered to require 10 to 15 per cent less fuel than the 1.4-litre multi-point injection or 1.6-litre GDi petrol direct-injection units in other versions of the cee'd family, with similar reductions in emissions. Depending on model, fuel economy is up to 57.6mpg, with CO2 emissions as low as 113g/km. They are members of Kia's Kappa family of compact engines.

The lesser-powered version accelerates the cee'd and pro_ceed from 0-60mph in less than 12.5 seconds and on to a top speed of 114mph. The high-power unit reduces the 0-60 time by two seconds and raises the maximum speed by 4mph, depending on body variant.

The key targets were instantaneous response, highly efficient combustion and exemplary torque across a wide portion of the rev band. These goals have been more than met with the aid of innovative technical solutions. The ecoTurbo engines feature laser-drilled injectors with six holes laid out in a pyramid shape so that the fine mist of fuel is spread more evenly throughout the cylinders than if it was being consistently sprayed into certain points. Thanks to a high-pressure pump, injection is at up to 200 bar.

The ecoTurbo engines have a straight air intake port rather than the gently curved port in the 1.6 GDi unit. It ends in a sharp air intake throat, reducing air resistance at all stages of the intake process. This improves cylinder tumble flow for faster, more efficient combustion while suppressing engine knocking.

There is a single-scroll turbocharger paired with an electric wastegate motor. This improves turbocharger performance while scavenging clean air for the engine to re-use for combustion. At the same time it allows the wastegate to open to improve the flow of spent exhaust gases. It is an innovative system which allows higher low-end torque, more immediate response at any throttle opening and improved fuel economy at high engine loads.

The ecoTurbo engines feature an integrated exhaust manifold which reduces exhaust gas temperatures, bringing the benefits of higher speeds with greater fuel efficiency. Lower temperatures also result in cleaner emissions by allowing the catalytic converter to operate more effectively. Engine temperatures are closely regulated by a dual-thermostat split cooling system which allows the block and cylinder heads to be cooled independently. The main thermostat controls the flow of coolant to the cylinder heads above 88º C to reduce knocking, while the engine block thermostat shuts off coolant flow above 105º C to reduce friction and improve efficiency.

New 1.6-litre CRDi engine with optional 7- speed DCT transmission

All three cee'd body styles are also available with a new 1.6-litre CRDi turbodiesel engine. This has increased power - up from 126 to 134bhp - with greater torque of 280Nm in manual versions and 300Nm with the new 7-DCT gearbox. CO2 emissions are down by as much as 10g/km in manual versions, and now start at just 94g/km, while fuel economy is as high as 78.5mpg, depending on wheel and tyre combination.

However, the greatest gains are seen when the CRDi engine is paired with the 7-DCT gearbox. Compared with the previous model with a conventional six-speed automatic transmission, emissions tumble by almost 25 per cent, from 145g/km to 109, with fuel economy of 67.3mpg.

The turbodiesel engine is a member of Kia's European-engineered and European-made U2 family. It features 16 valves and double overhead camshafts and has a cast-iron block and bedplate and an aluminium oil pan. A variable geometry turbocharger adjusts the flow of exhaust gases by altering the angle of the turbo vanes according to engine requirements to raise performance while reducing fuel consumption and emissions. It also has variable swirl control which increases swirl at low-to-mid loads to reduce emissions and decreases it at high loads to maximise power.

The 0-60 acceleration times and top speeds for the cee'd and pro_cee'd are 9.5 seconds and 114mph with the manual gearbox, and 9.8 seconds and 122mph with the automatic.

The 7-speed DCT gearbox was developed in-house at Namyang and, with a maximum torque capacity of 300Nm, will be used in a wide range of models within the next few years. It offers buyers the smoothness and comfort of an automatic with the sportiness of a manual when the driver wishes to take control of gear changes. One clutch operates the odd-numbered gears and the other the even-numbered ratios, ensuring that the transmission is always primed for a rapid shift with minimal torque interruption. This ensures complete smoothness with greater efficiency.

The new 7-speed DCT gearbox, like the six-speed manuals also available with the 1.0 ecoTurbo and 1.6-litre CRDi engines, is linked to Kia's ISG (Intelligent Stop & Go) engine stop/start system. This shuts down the engine when the car comes to rest (and the driver puts the gearlever into neutral and releases the clutch with manual transmission), ensuring that no fuel is used and no CO2 is emitted while stationary in traffic. The engine restarts as soon as the clutch is pressed in manuals or footbrake is released in autos.

The 1.4-litre CRDi engine available in the cee'd five-door and Sportswagon has also been improved. It continues to develop 89bhp at 4,000rpm, but now has an improved 240Nm of torque - up from 220Nm - between 1,500 and 2,500rpm. Fuel economy remains at 67.3mpg, while CO2 emissions are 109g/km.

The best warranty in the business

Models with the new engines, like every version of the cee'd family, offer the best warranty in the business - seven years or 100,000 miles, including labour, subject to terms and conditions. The warranty is fully transferable to the next owner if the car is sold before the time or mileage limit expires.

The cee'd range is made at Kia's European factory at Zilina in Slovakia.
