Jeep Grand Cherokee [UK]

The Jeep Grand Cherokee - America's most luxurious four wheel drive car- is now on sale in the UK and looks set to make a significant impact in the off-road market.

The powerful, well-equipped Jeep Grand Cherokee 4.0 Limited, which is to be sold alongside the more compact Jeep Cherokee that has been selling successfully in the UK for the past three years, is now available through Chrysler Jeep's94-strong UK dealer network at the truly competitive price of just£28,995. And with an insurance group rating of just 16p, the Jeep Grand Cherokee's value-for-money package looks even more attractive.

Jeep Grand Cherokee looks certain to have a flying start this year capturing sales from long-established rivals in both the off-road and luxury car sectors. Even before launch, Chrysler Jeep dealers have taken almost 1,000 sold orders for the vehicle. It is expected that at least 3,000 Jeep Grand Cherokees will be sold in the first year.

The new Jeep Grand Cherokee is factory-built in right hand drive at a new production facility in Graz, Austria, which was opened under two years ago to meet worldwide demand for the vehicle. Production capacity at Graz is designed for a maximum of 47,000 Grand Cherokees a year.

The new Jeep Grand Cherokee has an extremely generous standard specification and combines Jeep's legendary off-road abilities with car-like on-road behaviour. Standard specification includes a powerful 174 bhp 4.0-litre six cylinder petrol engine, permanent four wheel drive, speed proportional power steering, coil sprung suspension, anti-lock brakes, driver and passenger airbags, air conditioning, central door locking, cruise control, electrically operated windows and door mirrors, limited slip differential and electrically adjustable and heated front seats with memory setting on the driver's side.

All Jeep Grand Cherokees will be fitted with an alarm/immobiliser, which meets criteria for a Thatcham Category One rating, as standard. The only extra equipment on the options list are a sunroof (£645) and a CD auto changer(£492 including labour).

Also available, though to special order only, is an even more powerful V8 Grand Cherokee 5.2 Limited, which is built in left hand drive form only, for £29,995.

"The Grand Cherokee's arrival in the UK coincides with the fantastic sales success of the Jeep range. In 1995, we sold 5883 vehicles, which is an 18 per cent increase over 1994. From a standing start three years ago we have so far sold over 15,000 Jeep models in the UK, the vast majority being Cherokees," says Richard Mackay, Managing Director of Chrysler Jeep Imports UK.

"The extra luxury, increased space and fantastic value for money which the Grand Cherokee offers- and the fact that it is now factory built in right hand drive form on our doorstep here in Europe - will now enable us to tackle the top end of the off-road market. We are confident that the new model, with its excellent standard specification, keen pricing and unmatched heritage, will repeat the sales successes of its smaller Jeep brothers - our forward order situation already suggests just that," he added.
