The vehicle is manufactured exclusively in Honda's Swindon, UK plant alongside the standard hatchback model on which it is based.

Moreover, the new Civic Type R has claimed the title as the fastest front-wheel-drive production car in the world, based on setting a record lap time of 7 minutes 43.80 seconds on Germany's 12.9-mile Nürburgring Nordschleife (north loop) on April 7, 2017.
This new Type R also benefits from the fundamental redesign of the 10th-generation Civic body and chassis, which set its sights on luxury-class European C-segment cars with respect to steering, handling, ride quality and high-speed stability. Improvements to the breed include a 38 percent more rigid body, a new multi-link rear suspension, improved aerodynamics for the best balance of aerodynamic drag and lift, and a sports chassis fine-tuned on the circuits of Suzuka, Takasu and Nürburgring. Powertrain
The 2017 Civic Type R is features the most powerful engine ever offered in a Honda production vehicle in America. The Type R's 2.0-liter 16-valve i-VTEC® DOHC direct-injected, turbocharged powerplant advances performance on multiple fronts with a peak output of 306 horsepower at 6500 rpm and 295 lb.-ft. of torque between 2,500 and 4,500 rpm. The Civic Type R is the absolute pinnacle of Civic performance, and ranks as the fastest Honda production automobile ever offered in America, with a track top speed of approximately 170 mph.
The 2.0-liter turbocharged engine is made by Honda of America Mfg. at its Anna, Ohio engine plant using domestic and globally sourced parts. Completed engines are shipped to Honda of the U.K. Manufacturing in Swindon, England, where the Type R is manufactured. Specifically engineered for direct injection and turbocharging, with an ultra-lightweight forged steel crankshaft and forged steel connecting rods, the Type R powerplant is designed to offer maximum torque output in the mid-rpm range to provide instantly accessible power.
Offered exclusively with a 6-speed manual transmission, the high-strength gearbox offers a short-throw shift action and closely spaced ratios tailored to suit the 2.0-liter turbo's power delivery. A driver-selectable rev-matching feature smooths high performance upshifts and downshifts, and Launch Control helps optimize off-the line traction for maximum acceleration. And to help put the power to the ground, a helical limited-slip front differential is standard.

Turbocharged i-VTEC 2.0-Liter In-Line 4 Cylinder
Assembled in Honda's Anna, Ohio engine plant, the Civic Type R's DOHC 2.0-liter engine is the most powerful engine ever offered in a production Honda in America. With 33-percent greater displacement than the other turbocharged engines offered in the Civic family, the Type R powerplant is engineered to deliver an increase of 101 horsepower and 103 lb.-ft. of torque when compared to the next most powerful Civic, the Civic Si Coupe and Civic Si Sedan. With direct injection, low-inertia high-flow mono scroll turbo system with electrical waste-gate and a maximum of 23.2 psi of turbocharger boost, the Type R powerplant develops the horsepower and torque of a far larger, normally aspirated engine.
The turbocharged Type R 2.0-liter engine is designed to operate on premium unleaded fuel and is rated at 306 horsepower at 6,500 rpm and 295 lb.-ft. of torque between 2,500 and 4,500 rpm. The Civic Type R is rated by the EPA at 22/28/25 mpg city/highway/combined.
Cylinder Block and Crankshaft
The Honda Civic Type R's 2.0-liter inline 4-cylinder engine has a lightweight die-cast aluminum block with reinforced main bearing caps to minimize weight. Centrifugally cast iron cylinder sleeves provide long-lasting durability. In the interest of engine responsiveness, a specially developed, super lightweight forged-steel crankshaft is used exclusively in the Civic Type R. Each journal on the crankshaft is micropolished to reduce operating friction.
Pistons and Connecting Rods
The 2.0-liter engine's pistons have "cavity-shaped" crowns that help maintain stable combustion and contribute to improved efficiency. The lightweight pistons have a carefully optimized skirt design to minimize reciprocating weight, which minimizes vibration and increases operating efficiency. The pistons are cooled by oil jets directed at the underside of each piston crown and feature an internal "cooling gallery" like Honda Formula 1 engines that is designed to reduce temperature in the piston ring area. Ion-plated piston rings help reduce friction for greater operating efficiency. Special super lightweight, high-strength steel connecting rods are heat-forged in one piece and then "crack separated" to create a lighter and stronger rod with an optimally fitted bearing cap.
Cylinder Head and i-VTEC® Valvetrain
The direct-injected Civic Type R 4-cylinder turbocharged engine has a lightweight pressure-cast aluminum alloy DOHC cylinder head. With exhaust ports cast directly into the cylinder head, the need for a traditional separate exhaust manifold is eliminated, reducing engine weight and simplifying the assembly. The manifold is liquid cooled to help keep heat in check.
A low-friction, silent chain drives dual overhead cams and four valves per cylinder. The cam drive is maintenance free for the life of the engine. To further reduce weight, thin-wall hollow camshafts are used.
To benefit fuel efficiency, emissions and power, the turbo engine utilizes sodium-filled exhaust valves. A hollow chamber within the valve contains sodium that is cooled by the exhaust port cooling jacket. Since the chamber is close to the valve head, the sodium helps to cool the entire valve; and since the valve is internally cooled, it doesn't need the enriched fuel mixture that is generally used in turbo engines to help cool exhaust valves. The resultant leaner mixture reduces emissions, increases fuel efficiency and increases power.
The Honda Civic Type R's 2.0-liter DOHC 16-valve i-VTEC® engine uses an advanced valve control system to combine high power output with high fuel efficiency and low emissions. The system combines intake and exhaust VTC (Variable Valve Timing Control), which continuously adjusts the intake and exhaust camshaft phase, with Variable Valve Timing and Lift Electronic Control (VTEC), which changes valve lift, timing and duration of the exhaust valves.
The "intelligent" portion of the system is its ability to continuously vary the timing of the intake and exhaust camshafts using variable valve timing control (VTC). This helps increase power and also provides a smoother idle (allowing idle speed to be reduced). The cam timing is varied based on input from sensors that monitor rpm, timing, throttle opening, cam position and exhaust air-fuel ratio. The result is increased fuel efficiency and lower emissions.
The cylinder head includes small M12 sparkplugs, down from the more common M14, to save space and weight. The head also includes direct-injection multi-hole fuel injectors with a small-diameter bore. Higher-pressure direct injection optimizes fuel atomization, allowing for more efficient combustion. To provide a high-tumble intake charge that further enhances combustion efficiency, both the intake port and piston crown have special designs.
Direct Injection System
The direct-injection system enables increased torque across the engine's full operating range along with higher fuel efficiency and low emissions. Multi-hole injectors deliver fuel directly into each cylinder (not to the intake port, as in conventional port fuel injection designs), allowing for more efficient combustion. The system features a compact, high-pressure, direct-injection pump that allows both high fuel flow and pulsation suppression, while variable pressure control optimizes injector operation.
High-Flow Exhaust System
The Honda Civic Type R features a specially designed high-flow exhaust system with a unique triple-outlet design centered in the rear of the car. The center outlet is a key factor in the sound of the exhaust note in the Type R interior. The system is engineered to offer a stirring exhaust note under acceleration, coupled with quiet cruising at low power settings.
Low Inertia Mono Scroll Turbo System with Electric Wastegate
The turbocharged Civic Type R engine employs a small-diameter, low-mass turbine for maximum responsiveness. The mono scroll housing design helps the turbo build boost even at relatively small throttle openings and low rpm. The electrically actuated wastegate allows boost pressure to be precisely controlled. The Type R's maximum boost pressure, at 22.8 psi, is up from the 16.5 psi found in 1.5-liter Civic turbo models and 20.3 psi in the Civic Si Coupe and Civic Si Sedan.
A large low-restriction intercooler is positioned low in the front of the car where it receives unobstructed airflow when the vehicle is in motion. Intake air travels from the air filter, to the turbo compressor, on to the intercooler, then to the engine's intake ports. The intercooler helps reduce the temperature of air entering the engine, making it denser for greater performance. To reduce weight, the turbo system is plumbed with rigid, lightweight resin composite inlet pipes to carry intake air to and from the intercooler.
Friction Reducing Technology
The Honda Civic Type R engine makes use of a range of friction-reducing technologies designed to improve engine efficiency:
Drive-by-Wire Throttle System
The Honda Civic Type R's Drive-by-Wire throttle system replaces a conventional throttle cable with smart electronics that "connect" the accelerator pedal to a throttle valve inside the throttle body. The result is less under-hood clutter and lower weight, as well as quicker and more accurate throttle actuation. Plus, a specially programmed "gain" rate between the throttle pedal and engine offers improved drivability and optimized engine response to suit specific driving conditions.
100,000+/- Mile Tune-up Intervals
The Honda Civic Type R's powerplant requires no scheduled maintenance for 100,000+/- miles or more, other than periodic inspections and normal fluid and filter replacements. The first tune-up includes water pump inspection, valve adjustment, and the installation of new spark plugs.
Maintenance Minder™ System
To eliminate unnecessary service stops while ensuring that the vehicle is properly maintained, the Civic Type R has a Maintenance Minder™ system that continually monitors the vehicle's operating condition. When maintenance is required, the driver is alerted via a message on the Multi-Information Display (MID) on the Driver Information Interface (DII).
The Maintenance Minder™ system monitors operating conditions such as oil and coolant temperature along with engine speed to determine the proper service intervals. Depending on operating conditions, oil change intervals can be extended to a maximum of 10,000 miles, potentially sparing the owner considerable expense and inconvenience over the life of the vehicle. The owner-resettable system monitors all normal service parts and systems, including oil and filter, tire rotation, air-cleaner, spark plugs, coolant, brake pads and more. To reduce the potential for driver distraction, maintenance alerts are presented only when the ignition is first turned on, not while driving.
6-Speed Manual Transmission
For Honda's ultimate performance car, just one transmission is available, an ultra-quick-shifting 6-speed manual transmission (6MT). Topped with a solid aluminum shift knob, the unit offers smooth and precise shift feel with crisply defined shift gates. An updated version of the transmission used in the previous-generation Civic Type R (not available in America), the 2017 Civic Type R transmission has a range of refinements and improvements. To keep temperature in check, the transmission incorporates a cooling fin case design, along with a new liquid-cooled oil cooler.
The 6-speed transmission has been engineered to deliver state-of-the-art performance and shift action, with very low internal friction, tight internal tolerances and smooth synchronizers. A lightweight single-mass flywheel is used to sharpen engine response by minimizing clutch inertia. Compared to other Civic 6-speeds, the transmission has a more rigid exterior case, high-strength bearing system, high-strength gears, and greater torque capacity. A constant-mesh helical reverse gear mechanism reduces noise when reverse is selected. A reverse lockout feature prevents the transmission from accidentally being shifted into reverse while the car is moving forward.
Automatic Rev Matching
For optimally matched engine rpm during upshifts and downshifts, the Civic Type R features standard automatic rev matching. When this selectable feature is enabled, the Drive-by-Wire throttle system automatically adjusts the engine rpm during gear changes to match the next gear the driver selects. Automatic rev matching makes the Type R easier to drive by minimizing driveline shock during upshifts and downshifts.
The Honda Civic Type R's automatic rev matching has two operational profiles: in COMFORT or SPORT modes, the rev match system uses a seamless profile, designed to give the Type R a smooth, comfortable shift feel; in +R mode, the system switches to a more aggressive, quick-revving profile designed to complement the faster paced shifting of performance driving. The rev match system can be disabled using the Type R's customizable settings menu.
Launch Control
With the Civic Type R's formidable engine performance, getting an ideal high-performance launch from a dead stop can take considerable driver skill. In those special times, the Type R's standard launch control system is designed to maximize the Type R's launch performance while simultaneously helping to protect the driveline from unwanted shock loads. In first gear with the clutch disengaged, the system limits the engine to 3500 rpm before the clutch is engaged. This puts the engine in the heart of its peak torque range (2500 to 4500 rpm), for the best initial launch, while minimizing wheelspin for the best performance.
Helical Limited-Slip Differential
Powerful performance cars with conventional "open" differentials can suffer from excessive wheel spin, particularly from the inner drive wheel when cornering. The Civic Type R's helical-type limited-slip differential (LSD) helps insure that excessive wheel spin doesn't happen, by putting more of the engine's power effectively to the pavement. Under power, the limited-slip differential works to equalize the speed of the two drive wheels. The system never locks the speed of the two drive wheels together as would a locking differential, but instead allows different wheel speeds to accommodate the longer distance the outer wheel must travel when cornering. The LSD allows the Type R to accelerate harder on surfaces with uneven traction, to generate reduced wheel spin when exiting corners, and to enhance the vehicle's responsiveness to throttle inputs in corners. The term "helical" describes the way the differential's gear teeth are cut - which is at an angle to the gear's shaft. Helical gears are quieter in operation and can transmit greater torque than straight-cut (or spur) gears.
Body and Exterior
The new 2017 Civic Type R shares its unibody structure with the Civic Hatchback as part of the 10th generation Civic lineup, including its extensive use of high-strength steel and Honda's next-generation ACE™ body structure and crash stroke front frame, which enables superior crash-worthiness. Other benefits to this rigid but lightweight structure include low overall noise, vibration and harshness (NVH), and extraordinary dynamic capabilities. The additional use of structural adhesive adds rigidity for the Type R's performance driving mission, while the intensive body sealing measures and flush-mounted acoustic windshield glass contribute to the Type R's track-ready yet street-civilized driving character.
Exterior Styling
Slightly longer and wider than the Hatchback, the Type R exterior has numerous functional, stylistic and aerodynamic upgrades, including high-performance 20-inch wheels and tires. Up front, a black grille, and unique red and chrome Honda and Type R badges define the Civic's characteristic "wing" fascia, while LED headlights, LED fog lights, aggressive air inlets and a splitter with red edge trim further distinguish the Type R at a glance. An air scoop, inset with the aluminum hood, helps cool the engine compartment.
Among the aerodynamic aids are roof-mounted vortex generators and a hatch-mounted wing. Along the body sides is flush-mounted glass with black trim, while under the vehicle are strategically located strakes and panels that further improve aero performance. Wide front and rear fenders cover the track-ready 20-inch wheels and tires.
At the rear of the Civic Type R are the Civic's characteristic LED "light pipe" taillights, a flush-mounted rear window, rear vortex generators, wing and diffuser, the 3-outlet center exhaust, an additional red and chrome Honda badge, and an exclusive Type R badge. The Type R is as functional as it is aggressive, because the large tailgate is sized to allow easy loading of sports equipment, luggage and even bulky cargo.
Exterior Dimensions
The 2017 Honda Civic Type R shares its 106.3-in wheelbase with the Civic Hatchback for easy ingress and egress, enhanced second-row seating roominess, and cargo storage capability. The unique aerodynamic front and rear fascias give the Type R 1.5-inches greater overall length compared to the Hatchback (179.4 in vs. 177.9 in, respectively), contributing to the Type R's aggressive appearance.
The Civic Type R is 3.1-inches wider than the Civic Hatchback (73.9 in vs. 70.8 in), a direct result of its wider performance-oriented front and rear track (2.1 in wider in front, 1.2 in wider in back), its wider 20-inch wheels and tires, and the accompanying wider fenders. High-Strength Steel
Multiple steel grades are used in the Civic Type R's body construction to help achieve excellent overall vehicle dynamics, optimize safety performance, and lower noise, vibration and harshness (NVH). Materials range from five different grades of steel, including premium hot-stamp steel and ultra-high-strength steel used in the unibody, to aluminum for the front bumper beam and exclusive hood. All were chosen to achieve the best combination of strength, rigidity, dynamic performance and light weight. In total, 60 percent of the Civic Type R's body structure is composed of high-strength steel. And additional 15 pounds is saved through the use of the aluminum hood and lightweight insulation, compared to the Civic Hatchback.
Aluminum Hood
Saving 11.7 pounds compared to the Civic Hatchback's steel hood, the Type R's aluminum hood directly contributes to the vehicles low mass, lower center of gravity and optimized front/rear weight distribution. The result is a better-balanced vehicle, superior handling dynamics and higher level of exclusivity.
Advanced Compatibility Engineering™ (ACE™)
As an integral part of the Civic Type R structure, Honda's proprietary Advanced Compatibility Engineering™ (ACE™) body-structure enhances occupant protection and crash compatibility in frontal collisions. ACE utilizes a network of connected structural elements to distribute crash energy more evenly throughout the front of the vehicle, thus reducing the forces transferred to the passenger compartment. ACE channels frontal crash energy to both upper and lower structural elements, including the floor frame rails, side sills and A-pillars.
Crash Stroke
The ACE™ structure used on the Civic Type R features a crash stroke technology, developed by Honda engineers in the company's advanced safety research laboratory in Raymond. Ohio. With the crash stroke structure, in a frontal collision the lower section of the front vehicle frame hinges to direct the engine down and rearward, helping direct crash energy into the vehicle's floor while also minimizing cabin intrusion. This crucial piece of safety engineering effectively adds 80 mm (3.2 in) of additional energy-absorbing "crash stroke" to the front of the vehicle.
Besides helping the Honda Civic Type R aim for the highest ratings in the rigorous federal crash tests, the crash stroke structure enabled designers to develop the body design to feature a short front overhang and short hood-line for a unique and exciting appearance, excellent outward visibility and improved handling.
Body Rigidity
The benefits of the Civic Type R's unibody stiffness are numerous, including the ability to tune the suspension for class-leading steering and handling characteristics. The rigid body structure also helps maintain a satisfying ride experience for the passengers, with less NVH felt over a wide range of driving conditions. Some key advancements in body structure include the following:
Structural Adhesive
To help the Type R meet its aggressive performance goals, in addition to the welding that forms the Hatchback unibody, the Type R unibody additionally uses nearly 42.7 feet of structural adhesive at key stress areas. Applied at the seam areas of key unibody panels just before welding, the adhesive stiffens the unibody by 12-percent in lateral rigidity, enabling more aggressive suspension tuning while retaining suspension accuracy and resisting the intrusion of noise, vibration and harshness (NVH). Specific areas of application for the adhesive include the corners of all four door openings and the rear hatch opening, as well as inside the rear wheel houses.
Aerodynamics
Working in aerodynamic harmony, the different features of the Type R bodywork create the ideal balance of low coefficient of drag, which helps it through the air efficiently-with aerodynamic downforce-which increases road-holding and stability at higher speeds. Specially shaped components at the front of the Type R guide airflow through the radiator and into the turbocharged engine's cold-air intake, while channeling the remaining airflow over, around and under the vehicle. These include functional "air curtains" at the outer edges of the body and a molded under-panel positioned directly beneath the aggressive front splitter, which smoothly starts the rearward flow of air underneath the vehicle. Additionally, an aluminum under-tray is positioned beneath the engine and transmission and features a cooling duct that allows ambient airflow to the hydraulic engine mount. Dual side under-panels further smooth airflow between the front and rear wheels, while lateral strakes located in front of the tires help deflect airflow around them. Narrow A-pillars and flush-mounted glass also further the Civic Type R's efficient passage through the air.
Finished in carbon texture, stylish side splitters further enhance airflow along the body sides, flaring up ahead of the rear wheels to help air move efficiently over the openings. At the top of the hatch door are four vortex generators that, along with matching side buttresses, help direct airflow over the rear wing. The wing is fully functional and plays a significant role in the Type R achieving a low coefficient of lift. Finished in carbon texture, it is designed to work with both the front splitter and the lower diffuser, which helps air separate cleanly from the back of the car.
Class-leading Forward Visibility
The narrow A-pillar section on the Honda Civic Type R helps provide a class-leading 84.3 degrees of forward visibility (the angle made by drawing lines from the driver's eye point to the outboard edges of the A pillars). Safety performance is maintained through the pillars' shape, the precise design of load pathways during a frontal collision or rollover, and the use of 1500 MPa hot-stamped ultra-high-strength steel for the A-pillars.
Power Side Mirrors
The Civic Type R's body-colored power side mirrors are aerodynamically optimized to reduce wind noise and minimize turbulence. The side mirrors can be manually folded for greater convenience in tight parking situations.
Engine Compartment Isolation
Measures to isolate sound and heat emanating from within the engine compartment include dedicated front, side and rear hood seals (including a special seal around the aluminum hood's cooling intake), strategically placed heat baffles, a hood insulator panel, an engine under-cover, and dedicated insulation within the instrument panel. Inside the vehicle, a one-piece molded insulated carpet liner adds further to heat isolation and noise reduction.
Acoustic Windshield
Laminated acoustic glass is used for the Honda Civic Type R's windshield to help reduce noise entering the cabin. Tuned specifically to attenuate wind-noise frequencies, the windshield glass uses an outer layer of 2.0 mm safety glass, a 0.7 mm thick middle layer of acoustic polyvinyl butyl (PVB), and a 1.8 mm safety-glass inner layer for a total thickness of 4.5 mm. This helps the Civic Type R place at the top of its class in wind-noise performance. The windshield also incorporates UV light-absorbing technology. In addition, the Civic Type R has 4.0 mm tempered front door glass and 3.5 mm tempered rear door glass.
Sound-absorbing Undercovers
Underneath the Civic Type R, along both sides of the passenger cabin, are molded plastic absorptive undercovers that help mitigate road and wind noise. A special baffle plate located beneath the center of the floor pan further attenuates wind and road noise.

Auto On/Off Headlights
Like all 10th generation Civic models, the new Type R features auto-on/off headlights for greater convenience. The Type R's LED headlights are described below.
LED Lighting
The Honda Civic Type R incorporates a wide range of light-emitting diode (LED) exterior lighting features, including standard LED low- and high-beam headlights. Arranged in a low, sleek and compact in-line display, the LED high-beams provide a longer and wider range of visibility during nighttime driving. The Type R additionally includes LED fog lights. Like other 2017 Civic models, the new Type R also includes LED daytime running lights (DRL), LED one-touch turn signals, and LED taillights, brake lights, license-plate light and center high-mounted stop light.
The LED lighting has several advantages beside improved visibility. The LEDs are both mercury free and lead free, benefiting the environment. They require less power to operate than traditional incandescent lighting, which helps fuel efficiency. The versatility of the LED arrays also contributes to the Civic Hatchback's sporty design. And finally, LED lights have a longer life and are maintenance free.
Windshield Wipers

The tailgate can be unlocked by pressing the unlock button on the keyless fob twice (first for driver's door only, second for all other doors and the tailgate), or the dedicated tailgate button on the fob once. It can also be opened using the button inside the driver's door. The rear aperture of the Type R body is specially reinforced to strengthen the tailgate opening, which is the largest opening on the vehicle body. The increased rigidity at this critical location improves ride and handling, as well as interior quietness. The tailgate automatically locks whenever the vehicle is locked.
Cargo Area
The Honda Civic Type R's large cargo area is a key to the car's day-to-day versatility. A cargo capacity of 25.7 cubic feet with seats up is the largest in class. For even more cargo space, the split-folding 60/40 rear seatbacks can be easily folded down to open up a voluminous 46.2 cu. ft. of cargo area. An innovative, retractable cargo cover, shared with the Civic Hatchback, eliminates the intrusion of a solid cargo cover when the rear seats are folded down.
Exterior Colors
The new 2017 Civic Type R is available in five exterior colors including two solid colors, one pearl color, and two metallic colors. In keeping with the Type R's global performance heritage, all five color choices are bold and energetic, complementing the aerodynamic body's aggressive lines. Significantly, Honda has also brought back its racing heritage color-Championship White. All five exterior colors incorporate an improved urethane clear coat for a more polished appearance and heightened visual appeal.
Chassis
Based on the 10th generation Civic platform, the 2017 Civic Type R chassis - including the suspension, electric power steering and brakes - is exclusively tuned to deliver the leading edge of front-wheel drive performance for road and track. In doing so, the Type R also sets new standards for Honda in road holding, feel and control.
The Civic's dual-axis strut front suspension was redesigned especially for the Type R. Its special geometry was refined for sport handling, and includes more camber and more caster, which adds stability. In back, the multi-link system uses more rigid control arms and has more wheel camber to increase handling response, cornering agility and overall stability. Spring and stabilizer bar rates are significantly stiffer than the base Civic Hatchback's, and a special 3-mode Adaptive Damper System helps the Type R transition from ultimate track Civic to civilized street machine.
The Type R has the most aggressive wheel/tire combination ever fitted to a production Honda - 245/30ZR20 summer performance tires riding on 8.5-inch wide black-finish aluminum-alloy wheels. And matching the car's bulging fenders, the front and rear track dimensions are significantly wider than the standard Civic Hatchback (LX). Together with specially tuned versions of Honda's Vehicle Stability Assist™ (VSA®) and Agile Handling Assist, the dual-pinion variable-ratio electric power steering system provides highly responsive, direct and accurate steering feel. Braking is also upgraded, with larger rotors all around (cross-drilled and ventilated in front) and unique front 4-piston Brembo® aluminum calipers.
Front and Rear Suspension
Specially equipped with an Adaptive Damper System, the Civic Type R front and rear suspension systems provide exceptional handling that puts the new model at the top of its competitive segment, which includes benchmark American, European and Japanese sport-compact competitors.
In front, dual-axis struts contribute to the Type R's highly responsive steering, while also optimizing component packaging and crash performance. In back, a multi-link system provides exacting handling characteristics, while also helping maximize second-row seating and cargo space. Firmer spring and bushing rates, additional suspension camber and front steering caster, and stiffer front and rear stabilizer bars, sharpen turn-in response while minimizing body roll during cornering. The front and rear stabilizer bars are bonded to their mounting bushings and use low-friction connecting links for smoother operation.
While the new Type R suspension clearly has a keen sporting edge, it doesn't come at the expense of comfort. On the road, the Type R provides an accommodating cabin environment - along with the great cargo utility you would expect from its 5-door hatchback design.
Dual-Axis Strut Front Suspension
The dual-axis strut front suspension was designed especially for the Type R. It features aluminum knuckles, strut forks and lower arms, and has special geometry optimized for sport handling that includes more initial negative camber for crisper turn-in, and more caster, which adds stability. Although the front track is more than 2 inches wider than that of the Hatchback LX, a ¾-inch reduction in steering axis offset (each side) greatly reduces torque steer. The lower suspension arms are aluminum, and the Type R uses a 29.0mm tubular stabilizer bar.
The front spring rates are twice as stiff as those of the Civic Hatchback LX and the large diameter lightweight hollow stabilizer bar is 1.7-times stiffer. The specially tuned Adaptive Damper System helps the Type R excel on the street and track by allowing different, optimized damping curves that also adjust automatically to suit conditions while driving, based on steering input, lateral G and suspension stroke.
Multi-Link Rear Suspension
Specially tuned for the Type R, the multi-link rear suspension provides nimble handling in city driving, precise response for sport driving and emergency maneuvers, and the ultimate in track performance in the +R drive mode. Mounted on a rigid subframe, the system incorporates stamped-steel control arms, aluminum hub carriers and a 20.5mm solid stabilizer bar, which helps provide crisp turn-in along with body roll control.
Compared to the Civic Hatchback LX, unique rear suspension tuning for the new Civic Type R includes a 1.6-times higher spring rate, a 2.4-times higher stabilizer bar rate, and bushings that are over twice as firm. In addition, the Type R rear control arms are supremely rigid, the rear track is 1.2-inches wider, and more negative wheel camber is utilized - all to increase handling response, cornering agility and overall stability.
Adaptive Damper System (ADS)
The Honda Civic Type R's Adaptive Dampers are part of the Drive Mode system that also controls the Electric Power Steering, Drive-by-Wire throttle system, automatic rev-matching, Vehicle Stability Assist™ (VSA®), Agile Handling Assist and traction control. The Adaptive Dampers have electronically adjustable damping that lets the driving mode automatically fine-tune ride and handling to driver preferences.
The Adaptive Damper System takes inputs from three G sensors, four suspension stroke sensors, and steering angle to determine the appropriate damping force for the driving condition.
A switch on the center console allows the driver to choose between Comfort, Sport and +R modes. As directed by the driving mode controller, an electric actuator integrated into each damper governs hydraulic fluid movement inside the unit. Damper settings are automatically calibrated to the driving mode setting to achieve the following benefits:
Dual Pinion Variable Ratio Electric Power-Assisted Rack-and-Pinion Steering (EPS)
The Electric Power Steering (EPS) incorporates dual pinion gears and a variable gear ratio for exceptional steering feel and handling performance. Compared to a traditional single-pinion steering system, the dual pinion EPS utilizes the physical steering input from the driver as well as from a supplemental electric motor. A non-contact torque sensor measures the driver's steering effort and an ECU determines how much electric motor assist to add, with the result being seamless, natural feeling steering in all situations.
Uniquely tuned for the Civic Type R, the steering ratio is variable over a 17-percent range, with a final full off-center ratio of 11.7:1 and an on-center ratio of 14.9:1. This provides a quick 2.11 turns lock-to-lock, which minimizes hand movement and steering effort when turning, parking or maneuvering. High steering-mount stiffness and an increase in steering column diameter from 22 mm to 30 mm further enhance steering precision and feel.
Like the Civic Si Coupe and Si Sedan, the new Civic Type R has a larger electric motor and unique EPS tuning in comparison to other Civic models. In Comfort mode, the Civic Type R's EPS delivers a smooth, natural turning and handling response. This transforms into a noticeably more direct and linear feel when the driving mode is set to Sport, and to a highly direct and fully racetrack-ready steering feel in +R mode.
An integral part of the Type R's driving mode system, the steering feel automatically firms up when the mode is changed from Comfort to Sport or +R. The benefit for the Type R driver is firmer steering effort and substantially more direct feeling through the wheel in Sport mode, and additional steering feel, quickness and precision in +R mode.
Straight Driving Assist
Straight Driving Assist reduces the steering effort required when driving on a sloped or crowned road. When the Straight Driving Assist system detects that continuous steering effort is being applied to keep the car driving along a slope, the Electric Power Steering system applies motor assist to reduce driver steering effort to the same level as is required on a flat road.
4-wheel Disc Brakes with ABS, EBD and Brake Assist
The Honda Civic Type R is equipped with 4-wheel disc brakes with 4-channel ABS, Electronic Brake Distribution (EBD) and Brake Assist, with larger rotors than other Civic models for highly responsive and durable braking performance. The system utilizes a large-diameter master cylinder to achieve a short-travel, firm pedal. This results in an accurate and refined braking feel at low speeds, quick and predictable operation on the highway, a sporty, fun-to-drive feel on winding roads, and high-performance stopping on the track and in emergency situations.
The largest ever fitted on a production Honda Civic, the ventilated and cross-drilled front brakes rotors are 13.8 inches in diameter (1.3-inch rotor thickness) and are clamped by red high-performance Brembo® 4-piston aluminum brake calipers. The rear disc brakes incorporate 12.0-inch diameter solid rotors (0.43-inch rotor thickness) paired with single-piston brake calipers. The rear rotors are likewise the largest production Civic rear rotors to date.
Special brake pads work effectively at all temperatures, and cooling ducts up front improve braking performance during severe use. The low-friction design of the brake calipers reduces energy losses when the brakes are not in use, directly improving fuel efficiency.
Vehicle Stability Assist™ (VSA®)
Vehicle Stability Assist™ (VSA®) is an Electronic Stability Control system that works in conjunction with the Civic Type R's Drive-by-Wire™ throttle and its 4-channel ABS systems to enhance control capability while the vehicle is accelerating, braking, cornering or when the driver makes a sudden maneuver.
Specially tuned in conjunction with the Type R's helical limited-slip differential, VSA provides an additional limited-slip effect for the driving wheels by applying braking force to a slipping wheel, thereby redirecting driving force to the wheel with more traction. In +R mode, the driver can choose to switch off VSA.
The driver can additionally reduce the traction control effectiveness to allow more wheel slip by pressing the VSA button should the vehicle become stuck; ABS remains fully operational at all times.
Agile Handling Assist
Standard on all Civic trims including the new Type R, Agile Handling Assist selectively uses the vehicle's brakes to improve initial turning response and overall cornering ability. Agile Handling Assist utilizes brake vectoring to improve corner traceability and promote a confident handling feel. In slippery conditions (such as wet or icy roads), as well as during cornering at high lateral G, the system creates a yaw moment by applying braking force to the inside wheel, thus generating more turning force and reducing understeer. In the Type R, the algorithms that control Agile Handling Assist are automatically adjusted when the driver switches between the Comfort, Sport and +R drive modes.
Hill Start Assist
The Hill Start Assist function helps to prevent the vehicle from rolling backwards when the driver switches from the brake pedal to the accelerator pedal while the vehicle is stopped on a hill. Hill Start Assist automatically activates when the vehicle senses a certain incline and is fully stopped in any forward gear when facing up hill or reverse gear when facing downhill. The system uses a longitudinal G-sensor along with a wheel speed sensor to control the hydraulic brake modulator. Hill Start Assist, when activated, will release the brakes when the driver depresses the throttle or if the driver doesn't press the accelerator after a couple of seconds.
Electric Parking Brake (EPB)
The standard Electric Parking Brake (EPB) is simpler, more convenient and comfortable to use than a traditional parking brake. The EPB also frees up center console space, allowing a higher console and an extended armrest length.
Besides promoting the use of the parking brake, EPB makes hill starts easier when the Type R is parked on a grade. As with a traditional manually activated parking brake, EPB functions on the rear wheels only. Electric servo actuators are integrated into the rear brake calipers.
Automatic Brake Hold
When activated, Automatic Brake Hold retains brake pressure when the vehicle comes to a stop such as at a traffic light or in heavy traffic. This frees the driver from continually pressing the brake pedal to maintain the vehicle in a stopped position, a significant improvement in driving enjoyment in difficult conditions.
Operating the system requires two simple actions from the driver:
Once these steps are taken, Automatic Brake Hold will indicate engagement and then maintain brake pressure when the vehicle has come to a stop, even if the driver later releases the brake pedal. A green "BRAKE HOLD" icon on the instrument panel illuminates to show that the system is functioning. The Type R then remains stopped - even on a hill - until the driver releases the clutch pedal. At this point, Automatic Brake Hold releases the brakes and the vehicle resumes normal braking function.
Wheels and Tires
The Type R has the most aggressive wheel/tire combination ever fitted to a production Honda - 245/30ZR20 max performance summer tires riding on 8.5-inch wide black-finish aluminum-alloy wheels. The tires are 10mm wider, and the wheels are 2-inches larger in diameter and one-inch wider, than those fitted to the Civic Si Coupe and Si Sedan. The Civic Type R tire is a Continental Sport Contact 6, developed cooperatively with Honda engineers and the tire company. Despite being wider, the tires maintain a low rolling resistance while also helping to reduce road noise and vibration. With low unsprung weight, the wheels and tires allowed the engineers greater control of suspension tuning, helping the Type R achieve world-class front-wheel drive handling performance.

Spare Tire
Honda Civic Type R comes standard with a lightweight and compact tire repair kit (TRK). An optional accessory temporary spare tire will be made available.
Low-Friction Wheel Bearings
As in other Civic models, the Civic Type R's wheel hubs feature low-friction bearings that measurably reduce rolling resistance, which directly contributes to improved fuel efficiency.
Fuel Tank
The 12.4-gallon fuel tank and fuel lines are molded of high-density polyethylene for low weight, freedom from corrosion, impact resistance and fuel vapor losses. The tank and filler pipe are formed as a single unit, reducing weight and complexity, while further improving safety performance in the event of a collision. Additionally, the tank is positioned ahead of the rear wheels to help guard against collision damage. A high-efficiency fuel pump is housed inside the tank, and the fuel filter is a lifetime design that never needs replacement. An integrated baffle system positioned inside the tank reduces the sound of fuel sloshing.
Interior
As Honda's high-performance flagship vehicle, the Civic Type R has a specially engineered interior that puts the emphasis on ultimate driver control and comfort. Special high-bolstered racing style front seats provide solid support during aggressive cornering and a thick, flat-bottom steering wheel wrapped in black and red leather helps keep the driver feeling securely in control. Distinctive and exclusive Type R interior features like red-themed instrumentation, red accents, racing-inspired sport pedals and a solid aluminum shift knob set the Type R clearly apart. To apprise the driver of the Type R's real-time performance parameters, the color Driver Information Interface (DII) located in the instrument panel can display throttle and brake application in a graphic percentage format, turbocharger boost, lap time, shift lights and even a graphical g meter.

The system includes a full-color 7-inch Driver Information Interface (DII) display and a 7-inch color touchscreen Display Audio system with a clean and sleek appearance.
The Civic Type R, like other Civic Hatchbacks has an open roomy feel. With its hatchback design and 60/40 folding rear seatbacks, the Civic Type R interior is incredibly versatile with room for four people and a substantial amount of cargo. You can also mix cargo and passengers creatively to handle a variety of missions.
All important systems and controls in the Civic Type R are positioned within easy reach of the driver. Controls for the systems used most frequently - audio, cruise control, Bluetooth® HandsFreeLink®, navigation system with voice recognition and intelligent Multi-Information Display - are conveniently positioned on the steering wheel. The main instrumentation is an easy-to-read analog design, supplemented with digital and graphic displays. Typical of Honda interior design, the soft-touch switchgear of the Civic Type R is engineered to deliver a high-quality feel and positive action.

The Civic Type R's performance oriented interior is offered in a combination of red and black only, highlighted by red stitching and carbon-look trim.
Front Seats
Given the Honda Civic Type R's high performance potential, it has the most aggressive race-inspired front seating in the entire Honda line up. The form-fitting front seats have substantial upper and lower side bolstering to help keep the driver and front passenger securely in position during high lateral g cornering.
Compared to the seats in other Civic models, the special Type R seats feature high rigidity frames and added internal side structures in the base and seatback to better support the expanded side bolsters. High density padding provides optimal support in performance driving. The seat structure is optimized to reduce overall weight of the seats by 5.5 kg.
Both front seats are manually adjustable for fore-and-aft, seatback angle and height adjustment. The seats feature suede-effect fabric seating surfaces for breathability and secure support. Stitched "Type R" logos in the seatbacks also set them apart. For owners that intend to drive their Type R on closed courses or in competition, the seatbacks include dual shoulder harness pass-through openings so that racing seatbelt systems can be easily retrofitted.
Split-Folding Rear Seats
The Civic Type R's roomy second-row seating is designed for maximum comfort and versatility, with a folding seatback. The 60/40 split and folding seatback design makes it easy to accommodate passengers or long cargo.
Center Console
The Honda Civic Type R interior offers a range of convenient storage features for the driver and passengers. The center console is specially engineered to offer a sporty appearance coupled with versatile usability. With the prevalence of smartphones in most people's lives, the console is engineered around a "tech center" theme. Up front, it has a 2-tier smartphone tray with a wire management pass-through for organized connectivity. A rubber mat helps secure a phone and LED lighting is included for nighttime visibility. There's also an additional phone storage pocket on the driver's side.
An electronic parking brake replaces a conventional manual parking brake lever, freeing up more console space for a larger armrest and greater storage space. The main storage compartment is topped by a sliding, deeply padded armrest. A pair of cup holders are centrally located, and can accommodate large 42-ounce cups when the padded armrest is placed in the rearmost position. By sliding the adjustable cup holder rearward, there's space to accommodate even a large sports drink bottle. Inside the console, a small item tray slides fore and aft the full length of the console. With the cup holder removed, the console offers a class leading 7.2-liters of storage, enough to accommodate iPads and other large items.
Large Cargo Capacity
The Civic Type R has a wide and deep cargo area offering 25.7 cu. ft. of storage volume with the second-row seats up, and up to 46.2 cu. ft. of storage volume with the seats folded. This positions the vehicle at the top of its competitive set in total cargo volume. The storage area measures nearly six feet in length, with the second-row seats folded. The floor and sides are carpeted to help protect cargo during transit, and also to help reduce road noise entering the passenger cabin. A removable floor panel hides the tire repair kit, jack and wrench, and a cargo-area light provides illumination when the tailgate is open.
Side-Mounted Tonneau Cover
In a departure from the retractable cargo covers of most SUVs, crossovers and wagons (but identical to the Civic Hatchback), the retractable tonneau of the Civic Type R extends from side to side instead of front to rear. The primary benefit of this design is that when the second-row seats are folded down, the Civic Type R's tonneau housing does not intrude on the storage area as does a traditional retractable cargo cover's housing.
The user can change the tonneau operation from left to right or right to left, simply by removing the tonneau cover assembly and reinstalling it on the opposite side of the cargo area. The changeover takes just a few seconds, and no tools are required.
Steering Wheel
The race-inspired Type R steering wheel is designed to offer the driver a secure feeling of control, with a thick, contoured rim that has a "D" shape to offer improved leg clearance. Wrapped in black leather with red leather accent panels and contrasting red stitching, the wheel is highlighted by a large red Honda "H" logo. The steering wheel incorporates the most commonly used controls, allowing the driver to keep their hands on the wheel and their attention on the road. Bluetooth® HandsFreeLink® and audio system controls are located on the left side of the steering wheel. Cruise control controls are on the right and Driver Information Interface (DII) controls are located on the left side. The steering wheel offers manual tilt and telescopic adjustment.
Shift Lever
Historically, all Civic Type R models have had manual transmissions, to offer the driver maximum control in performance driving. In the 2017 Civic Type R making its debut in America, the shift knob is crafted from solid aluminum finished in a titanium-like warm silver-color, for a technical look and feel. The drive mode selector switch nearby lets the driver choose between NORMAL, SPORT and +R and driving modes.
Serial Number Plate
A special serial number plate positioned on the center console highlights the Type R's exclusivity. Every Type R has its own special serial number.
Power Windows, Lock and Mirrors
Power windows are standard equipment on the Type R and include auto-up and -down operation on the driver's and front passenger's windows. Power door locks and power mirrors are also standard equipment.
Engine Immobilizer
Complementing the remote entry system is a standard engine-immobilizer system. A special electronically coded key prevents the car from being started - even if a mechanical duplicate of the key is used. A transponder, built into the key, signals the immobilizer control unit that the key is genuine. If the car is hot-wired, or an unauthorized key is used, the engine will not start.
Climate Control System
The Type R has a standard automatic climate control system. To help conserve energy, the system employs a Variable Displacement Compressor (VDC) for reduced drag on the engine and smoother climate-control performance.
For the optimal comfort of both the driver and front-seat passenger the system features dual-zone operation. In addition to physical controls, the Display Audio touchscreen also incorporates climate control functions.
Meters
The Type R has a unique red-themed central Thin-Film Transistor (TFT) Driver Information Interface (DII) color display that depicts an analog tachometer, digital speedometer and additional selectable information. The instrumentation offers three distinct looks, depending on which drive mode has been selected using the console-mounted switch, Normal, Sport or +R.
Like other Civic models, the Type R gauge package progressively illuminates to give the driver a welcoming feel upon entry. When the door is first opened, the instrument lighting illuminates and then brightens progressively to 100-percent illumination when the ignition is switched on. The illuminated instrument panel then comes alive, indicating that the car is ready to go. At the end of the drive, the instrument lighting dims progressively.
Driver Information Interface (DII)
The Type R instrument panel provides important vehicle information via a Driver Information Interface (DII) positioned centrally in the meter panel. Controls positioned on the right side of the steering wheel allow the driver to cycle the DII display through multiple screens of information.
Like Si models, the Type R's Driver Information Interface includes a range of selectable real-time information designed to support performance driving. The system can display throttle and brake application in a graphic percentage format, turbocharger boost in pounds per square inch (psi), lap time (intended for use on closed circuits) and shift lights. A graphical g-meter provides a representation of acceleration, braking and cornering forces. In +R mode, the current gear selected is shown in the top left of the display.
The Maintenance Minder™ system alerts the Type R driver of upcoming maintenance needs via the DII and should a fault occur with the vehicle, specific warning information will appear. The display indicates when to change the oil, air cleaner, spark plugs or coolant, as well as when to rotate the tires.
Audio and Connectivity
Like the rest of the Civic family, the new Civic Type R significantly benefits from advances in-vehicle connectivity and audio performance with a new generation of cutting edge technologies. Type R standard features include a 7-inch capacitive touchscreen Display Audio interface with Android operating system, with a distinctive red graphic theme. Matching the aggressive spirit of the Type R is a standard 540-watt 12 speaker audio system. 7-Inch Display Audio Touchscreen
The Honda Civic Type R features a 7-inch Display Audio touchscreen that uses the Android operating system to offer a wide range of useful features and capabilities. The intuitive and easy-to-use touchscreen lets users swipe, tap and pinch - just like on a tablet or smartphone - to control the vehicle's audio system, display settings and other advanced features. The 7-inch touchscreen is a special high-contrast, high definition IPS display with a high viewing angle for better legibility.
In keeping with the Type R's high performance approach, it features a 540-watt, 12-speaker audio system that's a match for the top system offered in any Civic.
Premium 6.7-inch full-range speakers are positioned in each door and one 3.1-inch speaker in the instrument panel. Two 1.5-inch tweeters are positioned near the A-pillars, with two more in the rear doors, plus two more 3.1-inch speakers and a 7.9-inch subwoofer in the cargo area.
The system offers most popular audio formats, including AM/FM, HondaLink content, Pandora®, Bluetooth® streaming audio, and compatibility with the Apple CarPlay® and Android Auto™ platforms. SiriusXM® and HD Radio® are also standard.
Icons resembling smartphone apps are displayed on the high-definition, capacitive touchscreen, making the interface intuitive and easy to use. Interfaces for standard internet-sourced music and media options, such as Pandora® can be displayed and controlled on the Display Audio interface, with the ability to create personalized stations, tap to "like" songs, and view album artwork directly from the touchscreen. Display Audio also integrates touch operation of the menu and return functions for a modern and sleek look.
The system can also be controlled with illuminated steering-wheel mounted controls, including a touchpad control that enables an alphabetic search of a range of features using a vertical swiping motion. Search items appear on the color Driver Information Interface (DII) display located in the lower portion of the instrument display, just below the digital speedometer display. The system can also be controlled via voice commands, after pressing and releasing the steering-wheel-mounted talk button.
One-Cable Connection
In the Honda Civic Type R, compatible iPhones and Android (with Android Auto app.) phones loaded with the compatible HondaLink app can be connected to the 1.5-amp USB port with a single USB cable (provided with the phone), to display navigation information on the 7-inch Display Audio Touchscreen. This makes connection simpler and less costly than Honda's previous system that required three cables to make the connection between the smartphone and the vehicle.
Apple CarPlay
The Civic Type R offers standard Apple CarPlay compatibility. By connecting the iPhone to the car using the phone's USB cable (supplied with the phone) and the Civic Type R's 1.5-amp USB port, CarPlay features can be accessed. (Note that the CarPlay system will not work using the USB port located inside the Civic Type R's center console.)
CarPlay takes the most popular functions and features of the user's compatible iPhone and puts them on the Civic Type R's Display Audio touchscreen and DII display, positioned in the instrument cluster. You can get directions, send and receive messages, listen to audio books and music, all in a way that allows you to stay more focused on the road.
CarPlay features Siri voice control and is specially designed for typical driving scenarios. It also works with the Civic Si's controls - both on the audio touchscreen and the steering-wheel mounted controls, so you don't need to pick up your phone. A curated selection of available CarPlay Apps are designed for use in the Civic Type R, and are specially designed to minimize driver distraction.
CarPlay includes access to Apple Maps, which can provide turn-by-turn directions, traffic conditions, and estimated travel time. CarPlay can also predict where you most likely want to go using addresses from your email, text messages, contacts, and calendars.
CarPlay is compatible with iPhones that feature the small Lighting connector, not older iPhones with the larger 30-pin connector.
Android Auto™
The Civic Type R offers standard Android Auto™ compatibility. By connecting a compatible Android phone to the car using the phone's USB cable (supplied with the phone) and the Civic Type R's 1.5 amp USB port, the Android Auto platform is enabled.
Android Auto puts some of your phone's most useful Apps on the Civic Si's audio display and DII, positioned in the instrument cluster. You can get directions, send and receive messages, listen to audio books and music, all without the need to pick up your phone. Android Auto works with the Civic Type R's controls - both on the audio touchscreen and the steering-wheel mounted controls - so it's simple and intuitive to use.
Android Auto's voice control is specially designed for typical driving scenarios. A curated selection of available Android Auto Apps are designed for use in the Civic Type R, and are specially designed to minimize driver distraction.
Android includes access to Google Maps, which can provide turn-by-turn directions, live traffic conditions, lane guidance and more. CarPlay can also predict where you most likely want to go using addresses from your email, text messages, contacts, and calendars.
Android Auto is designed to work with Android phones running 5.0 (Lollipop) or higher.
SiriusXM® Radio
A new generation 2.0/3.0 version of SiriusXM® Radio is a standard feature in the Civic Type R, and it provides more than 165 channels of digital programming with near CD-quality sound. The SiriusXM® signal is beamed from two broadcast satellites positioned in geostationary orbit above Earth. The beams from these two broadcast satellites combine to span the entire continental United States and some of Canada.
SiriusXM® Radio programming includes channels devoted to music, sports, talk, traffic, weather, children's programming and entertainment. When the audio system plays SiriusXM® Radio, the audio system displays the current category, station, song title or artist's name.
This latest generation of SiriusXM® includes many new features, including pause, fast forward and rewind. There is also an instant replay feature and the ability to hear all songs from the beginning on preset channels. The new Sports Flash feature lets you listen to your favorite (non-sports) programming, and if your favorite team makes a big play in a live game that is being broadcast on SiriusXM, you will receive an on-screen alert. With a touch of a soft key, you can hear up to 30 seconds of audio before and including the big play.
Pandora® Compatibility
The Honda Civic Type R is designed to provide a convenient interface for Pandora®, a free music service that allows users to open an account online and create up to 100 personalized internet "radio stations" that are based on favorite songs or artists. Users can choose among their stations and listen via computer, and can download a free smartphone Pandora® app, which allows users listen to the same list of personalized stations via their compatible phone. Although Pandora® is free, phone data charges apply.
An iPhone or compatible Android phone can be connected wirelessly to the Civic Type R, using Bluetooth® HandsFreeLink®. To use Pandora®, the Pandora app is launched on a compatible connected smartphone and the vehicle's audio source is set to Pandora®. The audio screen shows Pandora® information and album art, and the audio controls allow listeners to choose from among existing stations, pause, resume, skip forward, and mark a track with "Like" or "Dislike" ratings. To mitigate the potential for driver distraction, some functionality of the Pandora® app is locked out when using the car's Pandora® interface.
HondaLink®
The Display Audio system with next generation HondaLink that is standard in the Civic Type R allows the owner's digital lifestyle to seamlessly integrate with the car and provides access to a world of cloud-based information. The application-based platform connects customers to online content both inside and outside the car. The connection between the system and the user's smartphone is made through the Bluetooth® HandsFreeLink® wireless interface. A HondaLink phone app provides convenient access for many services including location searches, local weather, messaging, Maintenance Minder alerts, service scheduling by phone, and access to the vehicle Owners Guide.
HondaLink Assist
The Honda Civic Type R features HondaLink Assist, which can help request emergency assistance for drivers. If a compatible phone is paired through Bluetooth®7 HandsFreeLink®, there is a cellular connection and an airbag deployment sensor is triggered, the system is designed to automatically attempt to notify an operator, report the car's current location, and allow occupants to talk directly to the operator. The operator can then contact emergency services if needed.
Siri Eyes Free
The Type R integrates Apple's Siri Eyes Free mode, imbedded in Apple CarPlay. Users of compatible iPhones® will be able to operate Siri through familiar voice commands by pressing and holding the TALK button on the steering wheel for two seconds when their iPhone is paired via Bluetooth®. Using Eyes Free mode, Siri takes hands-free functionality even further and helps to minimize the potential for distractions by keeping the iOS device's screen from lighting up.
Owners can direct Siri to perform a number of specific tasks while they keep their eyes on the road and their hands on the wheel. Capabilities include:
Bluetooth® HandsFreeLink®
The Bluetooth® HandsFreeLink® interface is designed to offer hands-free operation for many Bluetooth®-enabled mobile telephones. Standard on the Type R, the system wirelessly connects the driver's cell phone to the vehicle's audio system. This allows the driver to make or answer cell phone calls without removing hands from the steering wheel. The system is compatible with Bluetooth®-enabled cell phones that have the Hands Free Profile (HFP). A list of compatible phones can be found at handsfreelink.com or honda.com.
Bluetooth® HandsFreeLink® enables audio files to be played through the vehicle's audio system wirelessly with a feature called Bluetooth® Audio. If an audio compatible device is paired it will be added as an auxiliary source on the audio screen. This allows the Bluetooth® device's media to be played wirelessly by the audio system. Cell phone devices that support the Advanced Audio Distribution Profile (A2DP) and Audio Video Remote Control Profile (AVRCP) 1.3 allow the display of metadata for artist, album and track name on the audio screen. The vehicle's audio controls for "skip forward" and "skip backward" allow for navigation from track to track.
Bluetooth® HandsFreeLink® is designed for easy use. After the driver completes a simple one-time "pairing" process to link the cell phone with the vehicle, Bluetooth® HandsFreeLink® can communicate wirelessly and securely with the driver's cell phone when the phone is within about 33 feet of the vehicle. Once the driver enters the vehicle, the phone can be stored in a pocket, briefcase, purse or a storage bin inside the vehicle's cabin as the call transfers information through the wireless telephone interface. Certain compatible cell phones can also transfer the cellular phonebook into the vehicle through the Bluetooth® HandsFreeLink® system. After the cellular phonebook is transferred, calls can be made by making selections from the registered phonebook on the Civic Type R's display screen.
USB Ports and Power Outlets
The Honda Civic Type R has a 12-volt power outlet positioned at the base of the center stack on the right of the lower storage tray, with a 1.5-amp USB port positioned on the left and a 1.0-amp USB port is positioned inside the console.
Honda Satellite-Linked Navigation System with Voice Recognition and Honda HD Digital Traffic
The Civic Type R features the integrated Honda Satellite-Linked Navigation System, developed in cooperation with Garmin, which offers many improvements over earlier systems, including enhanced graphics, live search, speed limit display, customized vehicle icons, 3D buildings and terrain, and more. The system includes free map database updates for up to five years (initial purchase plus one yearly update each year for four years). The system includes the HD Digital Traffic feature, which alerts the driver to current traffic conditions and can display alternate routes around gridlock. It features expanded coverage including many surface streets within the U.S., allowing the driver to choose faster, less congested routes. HD Digital Traffic is subscription-free.
The navigation system can be controlled by voice or through the 7-inch electrostatic touch-screen audio display utilizing its tap, pinch and swipe functionality.
The audio system is automatically muted when the "Talk" button is pressed. The voice-recognition technology allows the driver to simply speak city and street names aloud, and the system responds by displaying the matches available in the database. Points of interest on the map - such as restaurants or grocery stores - can be displayed with brand logo icons or you can have the system provide turn-by-turn navigation, all by voice command. The point-of-interest (POI) database includes telephone numbers that can be dialed by using the Bluetooth® HandsFreeLink® system when the driver's cellular telephone is connected to the system.
Comfort and Convenience
Like other 10th Generation Civic models, the Civic Type R offers an elevated level of comfort and convenience with standard premium features typically found in more expensive vehicles. From the convenience of Smart Entry and Pushbutton Start/Stop to the ease of use of the electric parking brake and Hill Start Assist, the Civic Type R offers useful technologies that make driving easier and more convenient.
Smart Entry and Push Button Start/Stop
The 2017 Civic Type R offers the upscale convenience of Smart Entry and Push Button Start/Stop.
Smart Entry
Smart Entry allows the driver to approach, open and use the tailgate without using a key or pressing a button on the remote. With the remote in his or her possession, the driver simply presses the release button and opens the tailgate. As a safety and convenience feature, the Smart Entry system will not allow the transmitter fob to be locked in the interior of the Civic Type R.
Push Button Start/Stop
Once the driver has opened the door and is seated, the driver simply pushes the START/STOP button positioned on the instrument panel while pressing the brake pedal to start the vehicle. Powertrain operation and certain electrical functions are ended when the START/STOP button is pressed again at the conclusion of the drive. For accessory mode, the driver simply presses the START/STOP button without pressing the brake pedal. The Civic Type R's START/STOP button features a pulsating light to help the driver more easily locate the button.
Locking
After parking, a press of the LOCK button on the remote will simultaneously lock all the doors and hatch. A touch of the soft-touch lock button on either front door handle locks all doors and hatch to secure the Civic Type R. The system will not allow the remote to be locked in the interior of the Civic Type R.
Walk Away Door Lock
When activated, the Walk Away Door Lock feature automatically locks the Civic Type R when the driver leaves the vehicle. This hands-free locking capability adds everyday convenience that's especially useful when the driver has his or her hands full or is distracted. In typical use, when all doors are closed and the driver walks away, the Civic Type R will automatically lock when the key holder's distance from the vehicle exceeds 6.5 feet for two seconds or more and when no other key is detected inside the vehicle. An audible buzzer sounds and the hazard lights flash to confirm that the vehicle has locked. The Walk Away Door Lock feature is programmable, and may be turned on or off as the driver prefers.
Auto On/Off Headlights
Honda Civic Type R features auto-on/off LED headlights for greater convenience, along with dramatic LED Daytime Running Lights (DRL).
Capless Fueling System
Capless fueling eliminates the fuel cap, meaning that fueling the vehicle simply requires opening the fuel lid, refueling, and then closing the lid. This smart and easy-to-use design eliminates the need to touch a dirty fuel cap, reduces the possibility of damaging the vehicle's paint with the fuel cap or tether, or forgetting the fuel cap at the gas station. It also eliminates the possibility of activating an emissions warning by failing to properly re-install the fuel cap. And finally, the capless fueling system allows the use of a smaller fuel-cap door, which cleans up the lines of the vehicle.
The system consists of two integrated components, an outer shutter mechanism that prevents the intrusion of dirt and dust, and a self-sealing fueling flap that is closed by a torsion spring. Both operate automatically.
At a gas station, the driver simply pushes the fuel lid to release it and then inserts the fuel nozzle. Inserting the nozzle automatically opens the outer shutter and fueling flap. When fueling is complete, removing the fuel nozzle automatically closes both the fueling flap and outer shutter.
Electric Parking Brake (EPB)
The Honda Civic Type R's Electric Parking Brake makes using the parking brake easier and more comfortable and frees up precious center console space for storage and other functions.
Hill Start Assist
The Hill Start Assist function prevents the vehicle from rolling when stopped on an incline.
Safety and Driver Assistance
Like the 2017 Civic Hatchback LX upon which it is based, the new Civic Type R incorporates numerous active safety, passive safety and driver-assistive features. The Type R earned a 5-star Overall Vehicle Score from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).
Active safety features include Vehicle Stability Assist™ (VSA®), Advanced 4-Channel ABS, Electronic Brake Distribution (EDB), Brake Assist, LED daytime running lights, headlights and fog lights, a multi-angle rearview camera with guidelines, and an Indirect Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS).
Passive safety begins with advanced unibody engineering and construction, which, like the Civic Hatchback, includes the most high-strength steel (61 percent) in model history. An Advanced Compatibility Engineering™ (ACE™) body structure and energy-dispersing crash stroke front frame rails are employed, and additional passive-safety features include dual-stage, multiple-threshold front airbags, front side airbags, and side curtain airbags with rollover sensor.

Honda's Advanced Compatibility Engineering™ (ACE™) body-structure enhances occupant protection and crash compatibility in frontal collisions by distributing crash energy more evenly throughout the front of the vehicle.
Pedestrian Injury Mitigation Design
Structures in the front of the Honda Civic Type R are designed to help absorb energy in the event of a collision with a pedestrian. Research by Honda shows that the following features can dramatically improve a pedestrian's chance of survival if struck by a moving vehicle.

Vehicle Stability Assist™ (VSA®)
Vehicle Stability Assist™ (VSA®) is an Electronic Stability Control system that works in conjunction with the Drive-by-Wire™ throttle and 4-channel ABS systems to enhance control capability while the vehicle is accelerating, braking, cornering or when the driver makes a sudden maneuver. VSA functions by applying brake force to one or more wheels independently while also managing the throttle, ignition and fuel systems to help the vehicle maintain the driver's intended path of travel.
The VSA system constantly analyzes data from sensors that monitor wheel speed, steering input, lateral and longitudinal G forces and yaw rate. It compares the driver's control inputs with the vehicle's actual response. Whenever the actual response falls outside of a predetermined acceptable range, VSA intervenes with a corrective action. For instance, if VSA detects an oversteer condition, the system may apply braking force to the outside front and rear wheels to counteract the unintended yawing effect. In the event of understeer, VSA may apply braking to the inside wheels while reducing engine power to help return the vehicle to its intended course.
VSA also provides a limited-slip differential effect for the front wheels by applying braking force to a slipping wheel, thereby redirecting driving force to the wheel with more traction. VSA is calibrated to function in a near-transparent manner, and in many cases the driver will not even be aware of its operation. However, anytime the system is enhancing vehicle stability, an indicator light flashes in the instrument cluster. While the driver can reduce the traction control effectiveness allowing more wheel slip during stuck condition by pressing the VSA button, ABS remains fully operational at all times. In the Civic Type R, the VSA algorithms automatically adjust when the driver selects the Comfort, Sport or +R drive modes. In +R mode, the driver can choose to switch off VSA.
Brake Assist
A function of the VSA system, Brake Assist recognizes emergency or hard braking situations and almost instantly applies added braking force to ensure maximum stopping force, an action that can help shorten braking distance.
Advanced 4-Channel ABS with Electronic Brake Distribution
Like other Civic models, the Civic Type R is fitted with 4-wheel disc brakes with 4-channel anti-lock braking (ABS). The ABS system also incorporates Electronic Brake Distribution (EBD) circuitry that automatically proportions front-to-rear brake force based on the dynamic load on each wheel. Large front brake disc dimensions and a large master cylinder provide excellent stopping performance and pedal feel.
Seatbelts
Three-point seatbelts are standard for all seating positions. The front seatbelts are equipped with pyrotechnic pre-tensioners and load-limiting retractors to help mitigate injuries in a frontal collision.
Advanced Front Airbags
Both the driver and front passenger are protected by advanced front airbags (SRS). Like other Honda vehicles, the driver's front airbag is located in the steering wheel while the passenger airbag is located on the top of the instrument panel. When deployed, the passenger airbag inflates upward and then rearward to maximize its protective potential while reducing the likelihood of injuries caused by airbag deployment.
Driver s Spiral Airbag
The Honda Civic Type R incorporates spiral stitching into the driver s front airbag. The spiral nature of the airbag promotes early restraint and maintains a constant pressure by reducing volume early and maximizing volume later in deployment.
Front Passenger s Safety Vent Airbag
The passenger s front airbag in the Civic Type R features a safety vent system that increases safety for the front passenger in a frontal collision involving an airbag deployment. If the passenger is sitting "out of position" - such as leaning forward in the pathway of the airbag deployment - the auxiliary vents remain open, directing a significant amount of gas out and away from the occupant. As a result, the potential for injury from the airbag striking an out-of-position passenger is reduced. However, if the passenger is correctly seated, the airbag has an internal tether that will close the auxiliary vents at the necessary time to provide optimal occupant restraint.
Driver and Front Passenger Side Airbags
Side airbags mounted in the outboard area of each front seatback are designed to help provide pelvic and thorax protection for the driver and front passenger in the event of a severe side impact. In the Civic Type R, the side airbags deploy in a manner that helps mitigate the risk of injury to a smaller seat occupant.
Side Curtain Airbags
All outboard seating positions are protected by side curtain airbags with a rollover sensor system. In the event of a severe side impact, the side curtain airbags deploy from modules in the roof, providing a significant level of head protection in the window area. In the unlikely event of a rollover, a roll-rate sensor along with multiple G sensors trigger airbag deployment. The side curtain airbags will also deploy and provide head protection in frontal impacts as necessary. For example, small overlap impacts, where the front corner of the vehicle collides with a solid object.
In the case of a rollover, the side curtain airbags on both sides of the vehicle will deploy. However, in the event of a sufficient side impact that does not result in a rollover, only the airbags on the impacted side of the vehicle will deploy. The airbag maintains full inflation for approximately six seconds after inflation to allow for the increased duration of a rollover accident.
Lower Anchors and Tethers for CHildren (LATCH)
Both of the second-row outboard seating positions in the Civic Type R are equipped with the LATCH (Lower Anchors and Tethers for Children) child seat-mounting system. Tether anchors are provided the remaining middle seating position.
Indirect Tire Pressure Monitoring System
The Honda Civic Type R's indirect Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) uses wheel-speed data collected by the ABS system to determine when the air pressure in one tire drops below the recommended minimum. When this occurs, a symbol illuminates on the instrument panel to warn the driver.
Multi-Angle Rearview Camera
All 2015 and newer Honda models, including the 2017 Civic Type R, incorporate a multi-angle rearview camera. The camera can show a top view, normal or wide view when the transmission is in Reverse, based on the driver s selection. The camera display is viewable on the 7-inch color Display Audio touchscreen. Additionally, the Type R features static guidelines that help the driver better judge distances.
