The elegant Chrysler Sebring is an evolution of the 2003 Chrysler Airflite concept car. Peter Lambert, Managing Director for Chrysler Group UK said: "The Sebring is Chrysler's first offering in the mid-size family car segment. The Sebring combines an eye-catching design with high levels of safety and reliability, great performance and excellent fuel efficiency and is priced around 10 per cent less than the competition."
The front-wheel drive Sebring will be launched in the UK in June and is priced from £17,995. The new Chrysler is available as a 'Limited' model only and will be offered with two petrol and one diesel engine.
The 2.0-litre petrol engine with a five speed manual gearbox produces 154 bhp and 140 lb.-ft. of torque. Fuel economy is a competitive 36.2 mpg. The 2.4-litre petrol engine is available with an automatic gearbox that generates 167 bhp and 162 lb.-ft. of torque. The 2.0-litre turbo diesel engine delivers fuel economy of 45.6 mpg together with 138 bhp and 229 lb.-ft. of torque from just 1750 rpm, coupled with a six-speed manual gearbox.
"Chrysler Sebring includes a host of new technology and features, ranging from a cutting-edge information, entertainment and communication navigation audio system to a heated/cooled front cupholder for keeping hot beverages hot and cool beverages cool! Air conditioning, air filtering, heated leather-trimmed seats and a long list of safety systems that includes ESP and side-curtain airbags all as standard means the Chrysler Sebring will appeal to the pocket as well as the eye."
DESIGN
Car buyers looking for a high-quality, dependable D-segment saloon that offers high levels of style and craftsmanship in the segment finally have a vehicle to get excited about: the all-new Chrysler Sebring. Inspired by the Chrysler Airflite concept vehicle that was revealed at the Geneva Motor Show in 2003, the Sebring's overall surfacing and details reflect the Chrysler brand's four design attributes: expressive, refined, athletic and passionate.
"Chrysler Sebring delivers to the D-segment what the competition cannot," said Trevor Creed, Senior Vice President - Design, Chrysler Group. "This all-new Sebring showcases the Chrysler brand's distinctive, expressive exterior styling. Sebring is unmatched in its beauty and elegance."
From the front, the Chrysler Sebring features the distinctive face of the Chrysler brand, with the Chrysler signature grille, a uniquely sculptured bonnet that showcases the Chrysler winged badge and large quad headlamps. Fascia-mounted round fog lamps on the Sebring Limited model add to Sebring's athleticism and improve visibility during bad weather.
Chrysler Sebring's long bonnet profile, chrome beltline moulding and long roofline emulate a five-door appearance from the side view. High-gloss black appliqués on the B-pillars lengthen Sebring's greenhouse. Black quarter-window appliqués straddle both rear doors and the C-pillar to complete this effect.
Sculptured character lines run along the body, accentuating Chrysler Sebring's athletic stance. Standard body-colour body-side mouldings serve function as well as form, protecting the doors from parking dents. Chrome exterior door handles give Sebring Limited an elevated level of style and sophistication.
The all-new Chrysler Sebring's expressive character continues at the rear view, where wide tail lamps are integrated into both the rear quarter panels and extend into the deck lid for visual impact.
Chrysler Sebring rides on a 2765mm (108.9-in.) wheelbase and 1570mm (61.8-in.) track, which adds to its athletic stance, improves ride quality and stability, and maximises crush space in the engine compartment. Overall, Sebring is 6mm (0.2 in.) longer, 51mm (2 in.) wider and 103mm (4 in.) taller than the vehicle it replaces.
All Chrysler Sebring models are available in Inferno Red Tinted Pearl Coat, Linen Gold Pearl Coat, Modern Blue Pearl Coat, Silver Steel Metallic Clear Coat, Bright Silver Metallic Clear Coat, Brilliant Black Pearl Coat and Stone White Clear Coat.
Elegant Interior Features Fine Craftsmanship
The elegance found in Chrysler Sebring's exterior styling also runs through the vehicle's spacious interior, which features a modern, clean appearance with intense focus on quality, detail and execution.
"Chrysler Sebring's interior takes a different direction from many of the current D-segment saloons on the road. Its form is inspired by the Chrysler uplifted winged badge motif and incorporates new and fresh decorative elements," Creed added.
Chrysler Sebring's interior features soft surfaces, rich grains and selective gloss levels on the interior surfaces. The instrument panel features a Pebble grain, which is applied to the top cover, top pad, passenger bezel and cluster bezel for a uniform look.
The centre stack features a Chrysler signature analogue clock, which is surrounded by dual heating and air conditioning vents. A large opening provides room for any of the Chrysler Sebring's audio systems, including the new multimedia infotainment system.
The Chrysler Sebring's centre floor console features dual storage bins and a sliding armrest that moves 7.6cm (3 in.) to provide a comfortable driving position for all drivers. The shallow upper bin conceals small items. The lower bin includes coin storage and a 12-volt power outlet. An additional storage slot fits a mobile phone, PDA or MP3 player, which can be plugged into the power outlet.
All of Chrysler Sebring's doors include door map pocket inserts. The rear doors add a bottle holder for added convenience. The back of the driver's seat features a pocket for storing maps, papers or magazines. Standard 60/40 split fold-flat rear seats make room for more storage, and a standard fold-flat passenger seat creates a table-like surface to enhance the versatility of Sebring's interior.
Chrysler Sebring's interior provides comfortable seating for the driver and passengers. Drivers sit 6.4cm (2.5 in.) higher than they did in the previous Sebring, giving them a command-of-the-road seating position. The interior cabin is also roomier than the previous model. There is 45mm (1.8 in.) more headroom (without sun roof), 31mm (1.2 in.) more shoulder room and 75mm (3 in.) more hip room in the front seat.
In the rear seats, Chrysler Sebring offers 67mm (2.6 in.) more headroom and 43mm (1.7 in.) more shoulder room than the previous Sebring. Luggage volume in the boot is 394 litres (13.9 cu. ft.).
ENGINEERING
With the all-new Chrysler Sebring, Chrysler Group's Front-wheel-drive Product Team engineers have created an all-new vehicle that delivers expected levels of reliability and durability, world-class powertrain options and a unique combination of safety and innovative technological features, while never compromising on ride and handling.
The front-wheel drive-based Chrysler Sebring is built on the Chrysler Group's new D-segment car platform. It features an independent front suspension with MacPherson struts and a multi-link rear suspension. Front and rear suspension cross-members are isolated from the body to create a quiet ride, with less road noise, vibration and harshness (NVH) than previous models.
Three engine options will power the all-new Chrysler Sebring in Europe: two petrol engines and one diesel engine.
Petrol and Diesel Powertrain Options
Chrysler Sebring's standard 2.0-litre petrol World Engine with dual Variable Valve Timing (VVT), intake manifold flow control valves, dual counter-rotating balance shafts and many more features, rivals the best four-cylinder engines in the D-segment with its combination of fuel economy and solid performance. Mated to a five-speed manual transaxle, this engine provides 154 bhp and 140 lb.-ft. of torque. Fuel economy is a competitive 36.2 mpg on the combined cycle.
The 2.4-litre petrol World Engine with dual VVT, as available for the new Chrysler Sebring, is matched to an automatic transaxle with Auto Stick, which gives the driver manual shifting control or fully automatic operation. The engine generates 167 bhp and 162 lb.-ft. of torque - both increases over the 2.4-litre engine it replaces. Fuel economy is also improved, with 31.7 mpg on the combined cycle.
Chrysler Sebring saloon is also available with a modern 2.0-litre turbo diesel engine that produces 138 bhp and 229 lb.-ft. of torque, coupled with a six-speed manual transaxle. This diesel engine, a first for the Chrysler Group in the D-segment, delivers excellent overall performance and combined-cycle fuel economy of 45.6 mpg.
Standard ABS and ESP for Safety
Chrysler Sebring's standard anti-lock braking system (ABS) helps the driver keep the vehicle under control by preventing wheel lock-up when the driver brakes on slippery surfaces.
Electronic Stability Programme (ESP), bundled with Brake Assist System and Traction Control System, is also standard. ESP helps the driver maintain stability and does everything within the limits of vehicle traction to keep Sebring on course. ESP also helps maintain forward traction by constantly monitoring wheel speed sensor signals. If there is any indication of slippage, ESP engages, applying the brakes and, if necessary, closing the throttle to maintain traction. Chrysler Sebring's ESP system works best in slippery driving conditions, including wet, snowy, icy, sandy or gravel roads, as well as on hot, dry pavement where a thin layer of oil can form, causing the surface to be slippery.
"Studies have shown that in an emergency, the average driver will not apply the brakes hard enough or quick enough to achieve the minimum stopping distance," said Dennis Krozek, Chief Engineer - Chrysler Sebring, Chrysler Group. "Sebring's Brake Assist overcomes this tendency by using the ESP system to instantly apply the maximum available pressure to the brakes."
A pressure sensor in the ESP hydraulic module determines when the driver is making an emergency stop by measuring the rate at which the driver applies the brake. A high rate of pedal pressure application causes the ESP system to apply maximum hydraulic pressure to the brakes, and the vehicle stops as quickly as the available traction will allow.
Traction Control System helps the Chrysler Sebring maintain traction by applying the brakes and in some cases closing the throttle to minimise wheel spin during acceleration.
