BYD Seal 5 DM-i
The BYD SEAL 5 DM-i is the second Super DM plug-in hybrid model to reach European customers. The latest arrival is designed specifically for markets where customers appreciate a sedan body style, and it makes use of the same technical innovations that underpin the successful SEAL U DM-i SUV. The result is a vehicle with exceptional packaging, useful innovative technologies and the reassurance of a DM (Dual Mode) plug-in hybrid powertrain that can travel more than 1,000km on a full tank and a full charge.

NATURE-INSPIRED AESTHETICS DELIVER REAL-WORLD EFFICIENCY
The BYD SEAL 5 DM-i's bodywork has been crafted under the guidance of BYD Design Director Wolfgang Egger. His team has drawn inspiration from nature, particularly the ocean, but integrated family elements and honed the profile and details to ensure the aerodynamic efficiency required to maximise the range of the Super DM plug-in hybrid powertrain. The front of the car adopts BYD's latest 'Ocean X' look, with a distinctive mix of water-inspired flowing shapes and crisp lower 'flying fins' that give a strong sense of dynamism. The face is defined by sophisticated headlight units that incorporate LED daytime-running lights, a standard feature across the range.
The side profile and clean surfacing help to ensure a low drag coefficient, boosting efficiency, but Wolfgang Egger's team has used BYD's cutting-edge platforms and powertrain installations to ensure that while the roofline swoops low, there's still excellent cabin space for adults sitting in the rear seats. The overall profile is sophisticated, helped by standard 17-inch alloy wheels, while at the rear, futuristic tail-lights combine strips of light with water-shaped dots, creating a sense of movement and energy, and making the SEAL 5 DM-i instantly recognisable on the road.
A CABIN FOR EVERYDAY LIFE, WITH FEATURES TO MATCH
The influence of nature continues in the BYD SEAL 5 DM-i's cabin, which mixes flowing, soothing shapes with a premium finish, elegant refinement and spacious packaging. Every SEAL 5 DM-i gets vegan leather seats as standard, and as usual with BYD, the interior is packed with useful everyday technology - starting with a standard PM2.5 air-purification system that keeps harmful fine particulates away from the car's occupants. The cabin's comfortable environment is made more airy and bright by the standard sunroof - which also has a sunshade to help manage interior temperatures on warmer days.
The BYD SEAL 5 DM-i's 2,718mm wheelbase means comfortable travel for five adults, while the trunk capacity is a class-leading 508 litres - more than enough for several suitcases or a full week's worth of groceries shopping.
The BYD SEAL 5 DM-i's dashboard houses a 12.8-inch high-res touchscreen, complete with BYD's rotating function between portrait and landscape configurations, and multi-touch shortcuts for the heating and ventilation. It also offers voice control so you're never more than a quick command away from key functions, but those who prefer physical switches can use the multi-control steering wheel and access further features in the 'BYD heart', the core of the centre console, where buttons surround a crystal-inspired gear selector.
Wherever you go, the SEAL 5 DM-i will stay in touch, thanks to its built-in 4G connection. The car's systems, apps and navigation can be kept fresh using over-the-air (OTA) updates, and both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are integrated seamlessly. It's easy to keep devices charged, too, with multiple USB sockets on board and a 15W wireless charging pad on Design versions.
Even accessing the car is easier, thanks to an NFC function in the BYD smartphone app. This allows you to use your phone or wearable device to unlock the car, and you can even open the vehicle for family members when you're not around.
The BYD SEAL 5 DM-i is also ready for outdoor lifestyles with its Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) function. Whether you're camping, relaxing or need an emergency power supply, the SEAL 5 DM-i can keep your devices running at up to 3.3kW.
SUPER DM TECHNOLOGY ENSURES OVER 1,000KM OF RANGE
European customers have already discovered the benefits of BYD's self-developed Super DM plug-in hybrid technology, which mixes the company's trademark Blade Battery with a purpose-built, ultra-efficient 1.5-litre Xiaoyun petrol engine for strong performance and long real-world range. Now the system that has proven so revolutionary in the SEAL U DM-i SUV is adopted in the SEAL 5 DM-i, bringing the same technological advancements in a sedan body style.
Super DM (Dual Mode) can operate in two distinct ways - EV, where the wheels are driven solely by the electric motor, and HEV, where the same principle applies most of the time; in these cases the petrol engine is supplying charge to the battery and electric motor via an inverter, and the car has the driving response of a pure EV. In moments when performance demands require additional power, HEV model can switch from Series to Parallel, combining the potential of the petrol engine and the electric motor.
The BYD SEAL 5 DM-i has more than enough power for everyday situations, with a 0-100km/h time of just 7.5 seconds. But the sophisticated Super DM technology means that the car combines this with incredibly low weighted fuel consumption (WLTP Combined) of just 1.7L/100km, helping to slash everyday running costs. The SEAL 5 DM-i is an urban king, with up to 100km of range on electricity alone - and if the battery is fully charged and the petrol tank is filled, this hi-tech sedan also offers combined range of more than 1,000km for long-distance travel between cities.
The built-in AC charger allows a full refill of the battery (15%-100%) in less than three hours - so it's easy to keep the SEAL 5 DM-i running at maximum efficiency.
At the heart of the powertrain is BYD's proprietary Blade Battery, which uses lithium iron phosphate (LFP) chemistry for higher levels of durability and safety than traditional EV and PHEV batteries, without the use of nickel or cobalt. It can even pass the nail penetration test, one of the toughest safety evaluations that any car power battery can face. The Blade Battery's honeycomb-like construction helps it to achieve excellent rigidity and strength, as well as offering packaging benefits through its space efficiency.
COMPREHENSIVE LINE-UP OF SAFETY AND DRIVER-ASSISTANCE TECH
The BYD SEAL 5 DM-i comes with a full suite of driving-assistance technologies, including parking sensors, a parking camera, Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC), Lane Keep Assistance, Driver Fatigue Management and Front and Rear Cross-traffic Alert.
All versions of the car get a driver's airbag, a front passenger's airbag, front side airbags and side curtain airbags for crash protection. A Tyre Pressure Monitoring System is standard, along with an Emergency Call feature that helps to alert relevant authorities in the event of an accident.
GENEROUS EQUIPMENT LIST, REGARDLESS OF TRIM LEVEL
The BYD SEAL 5 DM-i is being offered with two trim levels - and they both come with an extensive line-up of standard equipment. Comfort versions of the car get metallic paint, LED headlights and tail-lights, a sunroof and sunshade, 17-inch bi-colour alloy wheels, vegan leather seats, rain-sensing wipers, electric adjustment on the driver's seat, an 8.8-inch digital instrument panel, a 12.8-inch rotatable infotainment screen, four USB ports (two front, two rear), dual-zone climate control, rear parking sensors and rear-view camera, Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) and a six-speaker stereo system.
Stepping up to Design adds a wireless smartphone charging pad (15W), electric adjustment on the front passenger's seat, an uprated audio system with eight speakers, a 360-degree camera, side-mirror footlights and an auto-dimming rear-view mirror. It also gets extra driver-assistance tech including front parking sensors, Blind Spot Detection, Rear Collision Warning and Door Opening Warning.
The standard manufacturer warranty on the BYD SEAL 5 DM-i is six years or 150,000km, with the electric motor covered for eight years or 150,000km. The Blade Battery, meanwhile, is covered for eight years or 200,000km on at least 70% of its original capacity.
The countries where the car was launched initially were Poland, Slovakia, Czech Republic, Romania and Croatia.
