BMW 5-Series Touring

The BMW 5-Series Touring, the epitome of driving pleasure, sporty elegance and modern functionality in the premium upper mid-range segment, is entering a new era. With numerous digital innovations and - as the BMW i5 Touring - an all-electric drive for the first time, it represents progress in the BMW Group's key fields of the future in a further vehicle class. Sustainability throughout the entire product life cycle is enhanced by the consistent electrification of the drive portfolio and a production process that is more focused than ever on resource conservation and recycling. The latest generation of the BMW iDrive display and control system, new digital services and pioneering systems for automated driving and parking also underline the company's technological expertise in the new BMW 5-Series Touring.

Now in its sixth generation, the BMW 5-Series Touring presents itself more than ever as a cultivated all-rounder with an elegantly distinctive design, inspiring sportiness, versatility and spacious comfort in a progressive premium ambience. The exterior dimensions of the new BMW 5-Series Touring are slightly larger than those of its predecessor, emphasising its dynamically stretched proportions and increasing the amount of space available in both rows of seats.

The vehicle concept of the BMW 5-Series Touring is specifically tailored to the requirements of target groups in Europe and the Japanese automobile market where the combination of sporty elegance and increased transport capacity has long been particularly appreciated. The latest model generation will be launched in Europe in May 2024. Other markets will follow in June 2024. By far the most important sales region for the new BMW 5-Series Touring is the German home market, followed by Great Britain, Italy, Sweden, Belgium and Japan.

Like the new BMW 5-Series Sedan, the Touring model is also based on a flexible drive architecture. It enables the new BMW 5-Series Touring to be equipped with highly efficient petrol and diesel engines including 48- volt mild hybrid technology, plug-in hybrid systems and as the first model of its kind in the premium segment of the upper mid-range segment also with a purely electric drive. All model variants are produced on a joint production line at the BMW Group plant in Dingolfing.

Exterior: Stretched proportions emphasise elegance and presence

In keeping with the modern design language of the new BMW 5-Series, the Touring features generous, clearly defined surfaces. These are structured by a few precisely placed lines. Its 2-box design is expressed above all in the long roofline, the gently sloping rear and the dynamically stretched side window graphics. In addition, a striking lateral indentation in the rear of the body and the dynamically sloping roofline give the new BMW 5-Series Touring a more athletic and sporty appearance than the previous generation.

Compared to its predecessor, the new BMW 5-Series Touring is 97 millimetres longer at 5,060 millimetres and 32 millimetres wider at 1,900 millimetres. The vehicle height has increased by 17 millimetres to 1,515 millimetres. The new BMW 5-Series Touring has the longest wheelbase in its class, increasing by 20 millimetres to 2,995 millimetres. The resulting proportions, together with the modern surface design, signalise elegance and a commanding presence.

Distinctive front end, flat side window graphics, individual rear end

Like the new BMW 5-Series Sedan, the Touring model has a striking front end with a modern interpretation of the typical BMW grille and twin headlights. The BMW radiator grille, which projects far forward, features optional BMW Iconic Glow contour lighting. The LED headlights feature the brand's distinctive four-eyed face in a reduced form. Two almost vertical LED elements arranged on the outside provide the daytime driving lights and the turn indicators. The precisely orchestrated interplay between the headlights, the illuminated BMW radiator grille and the light carpet projected from the sill create effective welcome and goodbye scenarios.

Adaptive LED headlights with blue design elements (standard in Europe) are available as optional equipment. The range of functions of the Matrix High Beam includes the glare-free High Beam Assist BMW Selective Beam. A further option is the M Shadow Line lights with black trim for the inside of the headlight housings. The optional BMW Iconic Glow exterior package includes contour lighting for the BMW grille and a dynamic light carpet for the entry area of the new BMW 5-Series Touring.

In the side view, the flat side window graphics, the slim D-pillar and the long roof spoiler emphasise the sporty elegance of the new BMW 5-Series Touring. An athletic shoulder line rises above the powerful rear wheel arches. The upper character line of the side section flows into an air scoop at the rear. Together with the other horizontal lines and the flat rear window, it emphasises the car's broad and solid stature. The rear lights, which extend well into the side sections, also feature a tailormade design. Their horizontal LED elements are divided by an L-shaped chrome strip.

A wide range of paintwork and light alloy wheels, M Sport Package and BMW i5 M60 xDrive Touring with specific design features

The range of paintwork colours includes one solid finish and nine metallic finishes. In addition, three BMW Individual paint finishes are available for the market launch of the new BMW 5-Series Touring, including two particularly expressive matt paint finishes.

The standard equipment of the new BMW 5-Series Touring includes light alloy wheels in 18-inch and 19-inch sizes for the all-electric and the plug-in hybrid models. The enlarged diameter line of the wheels compared to the predecessor model gives the vehicle an even more sporty presence in the side view. Optional 19-inch, 20-inch and 21-inch light alloy wheels are available ex-works and in the genuine BMW accessories range. The range also includes aerodynamic wheels, whose design and construction methods reduce both weight and air resistance.

The top-of-the-range BMW i5 M60 xDrive Touring comes as standard with exterior components that immediately emphasise its outstanding driving dynamics. A BMW grille with contour lighting, horizontal slats and M logo, high-gloss black exterior mirror caps and 19-inch M light alloy wheels ensure a particularly striking appearance. In addition, the M Sport Package Pro and an M Carbon Exterior Package are available in conjunction with the M Sport Package and for the new BMW i5 M60 xDrive Touring.

Interior and equipment

The fully digital BMW Curved Display, new steering wheels and sports seats as well as the redesigned gear selector lever on the centre console characterise the modern interpretation of the brand's typical driver orientation, which goes hand in hand with the current interior design of the new BMW 5-Series Touring. Its progressive premium ambience is also reflected in the optional BMW Interaction Bar, a fully vegan interior and innovative digital services. Optimised acoustic comfort, high-quality materials and more space in the Touring are further facets of progress.

The variable space for passengers and luggage in the rear is complemented by a range of intelligently designed functions that further enhance comfort and convenience in both touring and everyday transport situations. This makes the new BMW 5-Series Touring the ideal choice for modern target groups who appreciate practical qualities as well as sporty driving characteristics and prestige.

Optimised functionality for everyday use, leisure and travel

Shoulder room in the front has been significantly increased, while there is noticeably more leg, shoulder and elbow room in the rear. The tailgate of the new BMW 5-Series Touring swings upwards and the low loading sill makes it easy to stow large items of luggage. Compared to the predecessor model, the width of the luggage compartment opening has been significantly increased, especially in the upper section.

The length, width and height of the luggage compartment are identical for all versions of the new BMW 5-Series Touring, regardless of the drive technology. Thanks to the flexible drive architecture, there are no differences in load capacity between the models with a combustion engine, plug-in hybrid system and fully electric drive. When all five seats are occupied, the luggage compartment has a capacity of 570 litres. This can be increased to 1,700 litres by fully folding down the rear seat backrest, which can be split 40 : 20 : 40 as standard. The plug-in hybrid models of the new BMW 5-Series Touring in particular benefit from a significant increase in storage capacity. They now have a completely flat luggage compartment and offer the largest luggage compartment volume in their competitive environment.

As well as automatic tailgate operation, the rear seat backrests can be remotely unlocked from the luggage compartment as standard. Storage compartments under the load compartment floor hold the cassettes for the luggage compartment partition net and flexible luggage compartment cover. There are also additional stowage compartments, including one for the charging cable for the all-electric and plug-in hybrid models.

An electrically operated retractable trailer tow hitch is available as optional equipment. The permissible towing capacity is 1,500 kilograms for the new BMW i5 eDrive40 Touring, 1,800 kilograms for the new BMW 530e Touring and 2,000 kilograms for all other model variants.

Progressive cockpit design with BMW Curved Display, BMW Interaction Bar and new steering wheels

The BMW Wallbox, which can be permanently installed, is offered as an option and enables three-phase charging with an output of up to 22 kW.

Connected Home Charging for the BMW i5 Touring

Connected Home Charging offers a complete ecosystem for smart charging for the first time and at a premium level. The package offered in many European markets together with the strategic cooperation partner E.ON creates optimal conditions for solar and load-optimised charging (stage 1) as well as for cost-optimised charging based on a dynamic electricity tariff contract (stage 2, presumably from summer 2024).

The Connected Home Charging Package also includes the BMW Wallbox Plus with comprehensive connectivity, including installation service and networking. Digital services can be used to control charging processes via the My BMW app.

Plug & Charge Multi Contract: Contactless authentification with access to multiple contracts

The all-electric models in the new BMW 5-Series are also the first BMW vehicles to be suitable for use with the Plug & Charge Multi Contract function. The Plug & Charge Multi Contract makes charging at compatible public charging stations even more convenient, as digital authentication via app or charging card is no longer required to access them. The vehicle authenticates itself independently through a technical interface (ISO15118-2).

The multi-contract option of the Plug & Charge functionality is groundbreaking and unique. Customers can digitally store up to five individual Plug & Charge-enabled power contracts from different providers in the vehicle. The authentication required for the charging process and billing takes place automatically at compatible charging points.

Fixed kilowatt-hour prices for public charging

The main advantage of BMW Charging's public charging offer is the fixed and attractive kilowatt hour prices per country for AC and DC charging in the Active Tariff in Europe, independent of the charging infrastructure operator and independent of the price displayed at the charging station. The High Power Charging Network of the BMW Group participation IONITY, which is generally equipped with the Plug & Charge functionality, is also integrated into the BMW Charging Network.

The BMW Charging public charging offer provides access to more than 466,300 public charging points in 29 countries in Europe alone with just one registration. In Germany, drivers can access more than 87,000 charging points. BMW Charging is among the top providers with around 95 per cent coverage in the public charging network.

Product and manufacturing sustainability

The BMW Group consistently pursues its goal of becoming the most successful and and at the same time sustainable manufacturer of premium automobiles. Since 2007, as part of BMW EfficientDynamics, every aspect of vehicle development has been optimised in terms of how it can contribute to improving sustainability. The holistic approach to reducing the ecological footprint takes into account the entire life cycle of a vehicle - from development and procuring raw materials as well as using secondary materials, through production to the use of the vehicle and how it is subsequently recycled with the circular economy in mind.

In addition to the consistent optimisation of vehicle efficiency, the BMW Group is committed to the Paris Climate Agreement and, together with the renowned Science Based Targets Initiative (SBTi), has defined CO2e reduction targets for the supply chain, production and use phase on the way to climate neutrality At the heart of the company's ambitious sustainability targets is the intention to reduce CO2 emissions across the entire value chain by 40 per cent per vehicle by 2030 compared to 2019. At the same time, the BMW Group is pursuing the goal of achieving complete climate neutrality across the entire value chain by 2050 at the latest.

New BMW 5-Series Touring also meets premium environmental standards

The new BMW 5-Series Touring makes a significant contribution to achieving these goals and fulfils its premium claim not only in terms of build quality and driving pleasure, but also with regard to its environmental impact. Corresponding optimisations are already being implemented in the supply chain. Here, the CO2 footprint is reduced by up to 10 per cent for the combustion engine models and up to 20 per cent for the BMW i5 Touring compared to vehicles in which these measures are not applied.

The new BMW 5-Series Touring thus has a completely leather-free interior as standard, including the steering wheel. In addition, the loudspeakers in the door trim are covered with a decorative spacer fabric, which eliminates the need for fabrics and adhesives. Innovative Frozen paints produced using the Biomass Balance process are available for the paintwork. The proportion of recycled material in the luggage compartment trim of the new BMW 5-Series Touring is 21 per cent. For the upper material of the floor covering, 100 percent recycled material is used, which is obtained from old fishing nets, among other things. The design covers in the engine compartment are also made entirely of secondary material. In the BMW i5 Touring, the waste heat from the electric drive can be used to warm up the high-voltage battery.

The holistic approach to optimising sustainability is underlined by the diversity of innovations. This applies in particular to the new BMW i5 Touring. The all-electric model opens up the possibility of significantly improving the carbon footprint compared to a comparable model with a conventional combustion engine. Compared to the new BMW 520d Touring with combustion engine, the new BMW i5 eDrive40 Touring has an approximately 35 per cent lower global warming potential over its entire life cycle when using the current EU electricity mix. When using regenerative charging power, the new BMW i5 eDrive40 Touring even has around 55 per cent less global warming potential over its entire life cycle than the new BMW 520d Touring.

Production with an ever-increasing level of sustainability

All model variants of the new BMW 5-Series Touring are manufactured at the BMW Group Plant Dingolfing. In the course of the transformation to electric mobility, both the production capacities and the number of employees at the e-drive production competence centre located at this site have recently been significantly increased. In addition, the transformation at the BMW Group plant in Dingolfing is characterised by the iFACTORY vision with its "lean", "green" and "digital" thrusts.

The electricity used for vehicle production is generated from renewable sources to 100 per cent. Other facets of increasingly sustainable production include an energy-efficient plant fleet, packaging planning, transport logistics, recycling and water management. Electric trucks are being used on a pilot basis for transport within the plant site. The recycling rate at the Dingolfing plant is over 90 per cent. At the BMW Group plant in Dingolfing only around 620 grams of residual waste were produced per vehicle manufactured in 2022. More than 40 per cent of the water demand is covered by the company's own wells. This conserves drinking water reserves in the region.
