The market launch of the new BMW 6-Series Gran Turismo will begin in July 2020. It will be built at BMW Plant Dingolfing, alongside models including the BMW 7-Series luxury sedan and BMW 8-Series luxury sports car.
Dynamically stretched proportions mark out the exterior design of the new BMW 6-Series Gran Turismo, which focuses primarily on sporting elegance and functional versatility. With a length of 5,091 millimetres, width of 1,902 millimetres and height of 1,538 millimetres, its exterior dimensions are unchanged. The long bonnet, set-back passenger compartment and extremely long wheelbase (3,070 millimetres) combine with the slim side window graphic, the frameless windows of the four doors, the roofline flowing well into the rear end, the large tailgate and an active rear spoiler that automatically extends when the car reaches 120 km/h (75 mph) to give the car its unmistakeable appearance.
Front end: sharper presence, eye-catching sportiness
The front- and rear-end design developed for the new BMW 6-Series Gran Turismo reflects the brand's current design language. Generously designed surfaces and a clear geometry formed by a small number of lines provide a vivid showcase for the car's presence and pronounced sportiness, in particular. New contours for the BMW kidney grille and the headlights immediately bordering it on either side help the front end to make a striking impression. The kidney grille now spreads out further to the sides and reaches further down into the front apron. Its two kidney elements are framed by a single-piece surround, and the top sections of the grille bars protrude particularly far forward.
Adaptive LED Headlights with matrix function and non-dazzling high beam as standard
The extended dimensions of the BMW kidney grille and the now slimmer contours of the headlights emphasise the broad front end of the new BMW 6 Gran Turismo. Its standard equipment includes new full-LED headlights including adaptive cornering function and the BMW Selective Beam non-dazzling High-beam Assistant with matrix technology.
The clear design of the light graphic is accentuated by two L-shaped daytime driving light sources arranged next to one another. All of the light functions use LEDs. The outer daytime driving lights now also perform the role of turn indicators.
The cornering light and high beam are proactively adjusted using GPS. The dynamic light distribution function enables the illumination of the road ahead to be adjusted to the driving situation at hand. In urban areas, for example, the dimmed cornering light is switched on to more brightly illuminate the side area of the road. When driving on motorways, low beam range can be increased as appropriate.
The matrix function for the high beam with BMW Selective Beam technology enables the headlights' range to be extended without dazzling other road users. Here, high beam is split into several LED segments. These can be activated and deactivated independently of one another and in response to the situation on the road. When the front-mounted camera of the new BMW 6-Series Gran Turismo detects a vehicle on the road ahead or approaching from the opposite direction, the area of the road in which the vehicle is driving is only illuminated using low beam, while the remaining high beam segments continue to improve visibility over the remainder of the road.
Optional BMW Laserlight for low and high beam
The latest version of the Adaptive LED Headlights with matrix function and BMW Laserlight can be specified as an option. In the new BMW 6-Series Gran Turismo, the new Laserlight sources - unique in this vehicle segment - team up with dynamic light distribution and BMW Selective Beam non-dazzling high beam to give extremely intense road illumination tailored precisely to the situation at hand. Comfort and range are significantly improved on country roads and motorways thanks to BMW Selective Beam incorporating BMW Laserlight. At higher speeds, BMW Laserlight increases high-beam range to a maximum 650 metres and follows the course of the road dynamically.
An identifying feature of BMW Laserlight - visible with the headlights on or off - are the blue inlays in the upper edges of the headlight units. Also on the options list for cars fitted with either variant of the Adaptive LED Headlights with matrix function are BMW Individual lights Shadowline with darkened inlays at their upper edges.
Newly designed front and rear aprons further emphasise vehicle width; M Sport package with newly designed aerodynamic features; trapezoidal exhaust tailpipe finishers on all models
The design of the front and rear aprons also contributes to the further accentuated vehicle width. The air intake below the front bumper is now split into three segments. The two vertically arranged outer intakes belong to the Air Curtains designed to reduce turbulence around the wheel arches, while the aerodynamically optimised body features of the M Sport package include a low-set spoiler lip. Added to which, the surfaces of the front apron have an arrow-shaped structure with mesh elements which points towards the road and highlights the sporting character of the new BMW 6-Series Gran Turismo particularly clearly.
A new surface split also gives the rear apron a particularly wide and eye-catching appearance. The horizontal contour line below the boot lid is now more strongly defined and extends into the flanks of the body. On cars specified with the M Sport package, the diffuser element is particularly large. The exhaust tailpipe finishers integrated on the left- and right-hand sides of the of the rear apron are now trapezoidal in shape.
New exterior paint finishes, M Sport braking system now also with red callipers
The precisely modified design of the new BMW 6-Series Gran Turismo is complemented by an extensively revised selection of body paint finishes. The Phytonic Blue metallic, Piedmont Red metallic and Bernina Grey Amber effect variants have been added to the range of colour shades available to customers. On cars with the M Sport package, the Portimao Blue metallic finish can be specified, too. And the three BMW Individual finishes Dravite Grey metallic, Tanzanite Blue metallic and Alvit Grey metallic are also offered. Sumptuous diamond quilting for the surfaces of the seat cushions and backrests underscore its exclusive character.
The selection of interior trim strips offered has also been expanded. Newly added to the M Sport package is the Aluminium Rhombicle Smoke Grey variant. And the array of items included on the options list has increased further with the addition of ash open-pore fine-wood trim with accent trim strips in Pearl-effect Chrome. Another three particularly high-quality interior trim strips can be found in the BMW Individual range.
High-quality options to enhance luxury and individuality
The ambient lighting option includes LED illumination around the instrument panel and door shoulders and in the footwells. Six light colours can be selected from the iDrive control/operation system's menu to tailor the indirect lighting to personal preferences. As well as the Welcome Light Carpet for the area where the driver and passengers get into and out of the car, dynamic interior lighting is also fitted as standard. Here, pulsating light signals are sent out in certain situations. They appear on the inner panelling of an open door when the engine is running and on the instrument panel in response to an incoming phone call.
The Bowers & Wilkins Diamond Surround Sound System guarantees luxurious audio pleasure with its fully active amplifier, 16 speakers and 1,400-watt output. The latest version of the Rear-seat entertainment Professional comprises two touchscreen monitors with full-HD technology (each measuring 10.25 inches across), a Blu-ray player and two USB ports. Integration into the new BMW Operating System 7 gives the rear passengers new ways of selecting the content shown on the displays and of using digital services during a journey.
An array of high-quality options are available to further enhance driving pleasure, comfort and individuality. The new BMW 6-Series Gran Turismo has two-zone automatic climate control with extended features as standard. Drive systems, transmissions and BMW xDrive
The new BMW 6-Series Gran Turismo takes its sporting prowess, efficiency and poise to another new level. Underpinning this progress from a technical point of view are an extensive upgrade of the engine line-up and an expansion of the model range. Here, as elsewhere in its portfolio, the BMW Group is pressing ahead with its electrification strategy. As a result, all engine variants for the new BMW 6-Series Gran Turismo feature mild hybrid technology with a 48V starter-generator as standard. Efficiency has been enhanced in both the petrol and the diesel engines by making greater use of the electricity generated when recuperating brake energy. At the same time, the boost provided by an extra 8 kW/11 hp of electrical power enables even more driving pleasure. The interplay between the mild hybrid system and the latest BMW TwinPower Turbo technology for the combustion engines highlights the progressive nature of the new BMW 6-Series Gran Turismo.
The new model comes with a choice of two petrol and three diesel engines generating between 140 kW/190 hp and 250 kW/340 hp. Thanks to their state-of-the-art emission control technology, the engines already comply with the strict requirements of the Euro 6d emissions standard, which comes into force in 2021. The emissions of the petrol engines have been minimised by the inclusion of a petrol particulate filter, while the system of emission control for the diesel engines employs BMW BluePerformance technology, including an SCR catalyst with AdBlue injection for reducing nitrogen oxide emissions.
All engines team up with an eight-speed Steptronic transmission as standard. The BMW xDrive intelligent all-wheel-drive system in six-cylinder in-line versions of the new BMW 6-Series Gran Turismo directs drive torque to the wheels as the situation demands - in all weather and road conditions.
Mild hybrid technology with 48V starter-generator now standard in all model variants
Mild hybrid technology has been incorporated into all model variants of the new BMW 6-Series Gran Turismo, optimising engine efficiency and giving power delivery an even sportier edge. The use of a 48V starter-generator helps to both lighten the combustion engine's workload and boost its power, bringing a reduction in fuel consumption and emissions, and sharpening performance.
Fitting an extremely powerful 48V starter-generator and a second battery greatly increases the ways in which Brake Energy Regeneration and the recuperated electrical energy can be utilised. When the driver releases the accelerator, the generator transforms the kinetic energy into electricity to be stored in the 48V battery. Energy recuperation on the overrun is particularly intense when the Driving Experience Control switch is set to SPORT mode. The additional deceleration generated over and above the engine braking effect is also harnessed when the brakes are applied. A newly developed braking system enables the combination of electrical and mechanical deceleration to be deployed as required and with maximum efficiency at all times.
The recuperated energy accumulating in the 48V battery is also supplied to the 12V electrical system and used for powering the associated vehicle functions - from the lights, steering and power windows to the ventilation, audio system and seat heating. In addition, the stored energy can be used for generating additional drive power when it is fed back to the 48V starter-generator. The starter-generator then acts likes an electric drive unit to assist the engine, allowing it to operate within an efficiency-optimised load range as frequently as possible and ensuring there are fewer peaks in fuel consumption. When the car is accelerating, the 48V starter-generator is also able to offer the driver an electric boost effect that can instantly put an extra 8 kW/11 hp on tap for more dynamic power delivery. The result is even sharper response off the line and even quicker bursts of speed when already on the move.
Thanks to the 48V battery's extra storage capacity and the more intense harvesting of braking energy, the generator is seldom required to generate electricity during the engine's high-load phases. This lightens the combustion engine's workload considerably and increases its efficiency. The system is nevertheless able to charge the 48V battery from the generator, even while driving at a constant speed. However, this method of generating electricity by raising the engine's load point is only employed when the battery charge is low and preferably during phases when it does not have a detrimental effect on engine efficiency.
The powerful 48V starter-generator has the additional benefit of allowing the engine to be switched off and started again very swiftly with remarkably little vibration. The result is improved comfort when the Auto Start Stop and coasting functions are in use. When the driver brakes as they approach a junction or the back of a queue of traffic, for example, the engine can be switched off when the car's speed drops below 15 km/h (9 mph). And if the coasting function is activated, the engine is also completely shut off rather than just being decoupled from the drivetrain. This function is now operational at speeds between 25 and 160 km/h (16 - 99 mph) and, on the new BMW 6-Series Gran Turismo, it is available not just in ECO Pro mode but also COMFORT mode.
Engines with optimised BMW TwinPower Turbo technology
The mild hybrid technology works in unison with the latest version of BMW TwinPower Turbo technology for the petrol and diesel engines offered in the new BMW 6-Series Gran Turismo. The raft of technological measures in the two petrol engines (one four-cylinder and one six-cylinder unit) comprises a twin-scroll turbocharger and the High Precision Injection system, whose injectors are positioned centrally between the valves and operate at maximum pressure increased from 200 to 350 bar. This allows the fuel to be metered with even greater precision, thereby raising efficiency and also ensuring remarkably clean combustion. Other features include VALVETRONIC fully variable valve timing and Double-VANOS variable camshaft timing for the intake and exhaust sides.
The exhaust manifold integrated into the cylinder head - with a water-cooled design that aids thermal management - is found on both petrol units. The 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine for the new BMW 630i Gran Turismo generates maximum output of 190 kW/258 hp and peak torque of 400 Nm (295 lb-ft). The new BMW 640i Gran Turismo and BMW 640i xDrive Gran Turismo, meanwhile, are powered by a six-cylinder in-line engine producing maximum output of 245 kW/333 hp and peak torque of 450 Nm (332 lb-ft) from its 3.0-litre displacement.
The four-cylinder diesel engine and two straight-six diesel units available for the new BMW 6-Series Gran Turismo make their mark with an even finer blend of pulling power and efficiency. A two-stage turbocharging system now forms part of the BMW TwinPower Turbo technology integrated into all diesel units, the quick response of the smaller turbocharger ensuring particularly eager power delivery. The four-cylinder engine fitted in the BMW 620d Gran Turismo also comes with the latest version of the common-rail direct injection system. Solenoid injectors deliver fuel to the combustion chambers at up to 2,500 bar, resulting in incredibly fine atomisation and a remarkably clean combustion process. The 2.0-litre unit develops maximum output of 140 kW/190 hp, with torque peaking at 400 Nm (295 lb-ft).
The 3.0-litre six-cylinder in-line diesel engine under the bonnet of the BMW 630d Gran Turismo and BMW 630d xDrive Gran Turismo also now incorporates multi-stage turbocharging technology for exceptionally sharp response. It combines with a common-rail direct injection system whose piezo injectors produce maximum pressure of 2,700 bar. Thanks to the variable turbine geometry used in the turbocharging system's low-pressure stage, power comes on line in an instant and continues to build unabated. There is now peak torque of 650 Nm (479 lb-ft) on tap between 1,500 and 2,500 rpm, an increase of 30 Nm (22 lb-ft) over the previous engine. The maximum output of the new diesel unit stands at 210 kW/286 hp, 15 kW/21 hp more than before.
The second straight-six diesel engine available for the new BMW 6-Series Gran Turismo likewise benefits from further developed BMW TwinPower Turbo technology, resulting in even more impressive performance characteristics. Fitted in the new BMW 640d xDrive Gran Turismo, this 3.0-litre power unit boasts maximum output of 250 kW/340 hp - an increase of 15 kW/20 hp - and peak torque of 700 Nm (516 lb-ft), an improvement of 20 Nm (15 lb-ft). To ensure exceptionally sharp turbocharger response, the system's high-pressure and low-pressure stages both feature variable turbine geometry. Engine response and efficiency also profit from an intake system with optimised air routing, whose revised design enhances the power unit's acoustic characteristics.
Eight-speed Steptronic transmission with optimised shift dynamics and increased efficiency
All of the engines offered for the new BMW 6-Series Gran Turismo link up with an eight-speed Steptronic transmission as standard. The latest version of the automatic transmission features a weight-reduced design, a newly developed control system and an increased gear ratio spread. As a result, it is possible to achieve significant efficiency gains with lower engine speeds, particularly when driving in higher gears. A new generation of torsion dampers that reduce rotational irregularities within the powertrain helps to enhance both driving comfort and shift smoothness. Integral twin-damper systems for isolating vibrations reduce the degree of slip at the torque converter lock-up clutch.
The eight-speed Steptronic transmission also includes more advanced hydraulic control, resulting in even sportier gear shifts. In order to optimise the shift strategy for sporty performance and efficiency, the transmission's control unit is also able to take into account the data on route topography and traffic situation supplied by the navigation system and driver assistance systems. This makes it possible, for example, to shift down early when approaching a junction or a vehicle ahead. An electrically operated oil pump keeps the transmission lubricated and maintains oil pressure during phases when the engine is switched off due to activation of the Auto Start Stop or coasting functions.
The optional eight-speed Steptronic Sport transmission offers even sportier shift characteristics and faster gear changes. Shift paddles on the steering wheel allow rapid manual interventions in the gear selection process. And there is also a Launch Control function for powering off the line with optimal traction and maximum dynamic flair.
BMW xDrive available for all six-cylinder model variants
The BMW xDrive system ensures supreme traction, directional stability and agility, and is available for three model variants of the new BMW 6-Series Gran Turismo, either as a standard feature or an option. The intelligent all-wheel-drive system enhances the car's already supremely assured, sporty handling by relaying power to the wheels as required. A multi-plate clutch in the transfer case - whose electronic control technology is interlinked with the powertrain and chassis systems - takes care of distributing drive torque swiftly and precisely between the front and rear wheels, as the driving situation demands.
All of the engine's torque is directed to the rear wheels in situations where all-wheel drive is not needed, optimising the system's efficiency. The rear-biased set-up of xDrive is also notable when the car's dynamic performance abilities are being put to the test, delivering the type of driving experience for which BMW is renowned. When taking corners at speed, for example, just the right amount of extra drive force is transferred to the rear wheels to help the car turn into the bend with the requisite accuracy.
The most powerful diesel engine in the range teams up with the intelligent all-wheel-drive system in the new BMW 640d xDrive Gran Turismo as standard. And xDrive also lays on characteristic driving pleasure in the BMW 630d xDrive Gran Turismo and BMW 640i xDrive Gran Turismo as an optional alternative to classical rear-wheel drive.
Chassis technology
The exceptional balance of sporting flair and long-distance comfort so clearly evident in the overall concept and styling of the new BMW 6-Series Gran Turismo is also mirrored in the chassis technology's design and tuning. With a long wheelbase and wide tracks, a body boasting a strong yet lighter structure, and perfect 50 : 50 weight distribution, the 6-Series Gran Turismo comes with all the tools to offer supreme ride comfort combined with agile and assured handling in any situation.
The chassis tuning has been refined for the new model and makes allowance for the change in weight balance resulting from the inclusion of mild hybrid technology. Plus, a selection of optional chassis systems enables customers to precisely tailor the vehicle characteristics to their individual requirements. As a result, the car can be specified with either an extremely dynamic or a comfort-focused set-up, or in a configuration offering the perfect balance between the two.
Sophisticated chassis technology featuring a double-wishbone front axle and five-link rear axle
The familiar combination of a double-wishbone front axle and five-link rear axle already promises a superb blend of agility and ride comfort. The design principle behind the front axle allows it to separate the wheel guidance and damper functions to prevent any loss of comfort even under high lateral acceleration. The steering also remains as free as possible from disruptive forces caused by irregularities in the road surface. Meanwhile, the rear axle's dual elastic bearings and bespoke elastokinematics result in optimum directional stability and precise wheel guidance. The rear axle subframe's large supporting base ensures effective decoupling of powertrain and wheel suspension, which benefits acoustic comfort.
The standard self-levelling air suspension at the rear axle responds to the high load-carrying potential of the new BMW 6-Series Gran Turismo in customary fashion. It keeps the car at a constant ride height under all driving and load conditions while at the same time controlling vibrations. Another item on the standard equipment list for the new BMW 6-Series Gran Turismo is the electromechanical steering system's Servotronic function, with speed-sensitive power assistance ensuring even more precise handling when cornering at speed and easier manoeuvring.
Integral Active Steering: greater agility and poise, and now also more effortless low-speed manoeuvring
A number of optional chassis systems are available to take the sporting agility and authoritative handling of the new BMW 6-Series Gran Turismo up another level, including Integral Active Steering. Electrically turning the rear wheels by up to three degrees in either the same direction as or the opposite direction to the front wheels, depending on road speed, makes the car more nimble when driving in urban traffic or cornering, while also allowing lane changes to be performed with greater ease at moderate to high speeds. With Integral Active Steering, the rear wheels are now turned in the opposite direction to the front wheels when travelling at extremely low speeds - i.e. under 3 km/h (2 mph). As a result, the new BMW 6-Series Gran Turismo can also be manoeuvred even more comfortably when entering and exiting parking spaces or slowly weaving through narrow channels.
The system also incorporates a variable steering rack ratio at the front axle that further reduces steering effort. The Integral Active Steering control unit takes into account road speed and steering wheel movements, as well as other factors such as lateral acceleration, the angle the front wheels are turned to and the mode selected with the Driving Experience Control switch. This ensures the steering adjusts its responses precisely to the demands of the driving situation at hand.
Adaptive two-axle air suspension and active roll stabilisation for maximum ride comfort and sporting precision
The new BMW 6-Series Gran Turismo again offers sophisticated suspension systems that elevate the standard of ride comfort to even greater heights. The Adaptive two-axle air suspension available as an option enables the spring and damper responses to be tailored to the driving situation and the driver's preferences with exceptional precision. The air suspension at the front and rear axles combines with electronically controlled dampers to achieve the desired effect.
The suspension system is supplied with air by an electrically driven compressor with pressure reservoir. The air supply is controlled individually for each wheel, enabling the suspension to balance out an unevenly loaded car. The system also makes it possible to adjust the car's ride height manually. Ground clearance can be increased by 20 millimetres at the touch of a button - for driving on dirt tracks, for example, or negotiating steep ramps. As soon as the car's speed exceeds 35 km/h (22 mph), the self-levelling system automatically returns to the standard setting. The ride height can also be dropped by 10 millimetres by pushing a button. This happens automatically at speeds above 120 km/h (75 mph) and when the Driving Experience Control switch is set to SPORT mode.
The electronically controlled dampers improve both the primary and secondary ride in the new BMW 6-Series Gran Turismo, as well as its handling dynamics. Continuously adjustable valves are used to control the damping force at each wheel individually. In the process, the compression and rebound stages are both adjusted continuously and independently of one another. The damper response settings vary according to the mode selected with the Driving Experience Control switch. The firm connection to the body activated in SPORT and SPORT+ mode is noticeably different to the damper responses engaged when COMFORT and COMFORT+ are selected. An additional ADAPTIVE mode is available on models with Adaptive two-axle air suspension. In this setting, the vehicle configuration automatically adjusts to suit the driving style and driving situation, also taking into account factors such as the route topography indicated by the navigation data. As a result, the right set-up is instantly selected as the car moves from city driving to higher-speed roads, for example, or approaches a corner.
Executive Drive once again adds active roll stabilisation to the Adaptive two-axle air suspension on the new BMW 6-Series Gran Turismo, further enhancing both ride comfort and sporting prowess. This system replaces the familiar rigid connection between the two halves of the anti-roll bar for the right and left wheel with an electric swivel motor on both the front and the rear axle. Torque is carefully applied to the appropriate half of the anti-roll bar in order to counter body roll during dynamic cornering with exceptional speed and precision. This enhances the car's agility and directional stability both on the way into and out of corners. When driving straight ahead, on the other hand, the two halves of the anti-roll bars at each axle are disconnected. In this way, disruptive forces triggered by bumps in the road surface on one side of the car are not relayed from the wheel absorbing the impact to the wheel on the other side. This avoids the body movement that would otherwise be caused, thereby maintaining maximum ride comfort.
The also optional M Sport brakes are available in two variants; the brake callipers bearing the M logo can now be painted in Red as an alternative to the Blue finish.
New 19- and 20-inch light-alloy wheels available as an option
The new BMW 6-Series Gran Turismo is fitted as standard with 17- or 18-inch (BMW 640i Gran Turismo, BMW 640i xDrive Gran Turismo and BMW 640d xDrive Gran Turismo) light-alloy wheels. Other light-alloy wheel variants in 18- to 20-inch formats can be ordered as an option.
New to the range are 19-inch light-alloy wheels in double-spoke design with a polished Orbit Grey finish, and 20-inch light-alloy wheels in multi-spoke design with a polished Ferric Grey finish, both of which have mixed-size tyres. In cars specified with the M Sport package, the range of options also includes 19-inch M light-alloy wheels in double-spoke design and 20-inch M light-alloy wheels in star-spoke design. Both of these variants come in polished Orbit Grey with mixed-size tyres.
Driver assistance systems
The advances ushered in by the new BMW 6-Series Gran Turismo translate most notably into a substantial increase in sports performance and ride comfort. This is now a more intelligent car, too. The exceptionally broad choice of standard and optional driver assistance systems and the addition of new functions take the new BMW 6-Series Gran Turismo another step along the road to automated driving. Its driver assistance systems process camera images as well as the data gathered by ultrasonic and radar sensors to monitor the vehicle's surroundings, warn of potential hazards and minimise the risk of an accident with corrective braking or steering inputs. In so doing, they ease the driver's workload in monotonous situations - such as traffic jams or slow-moving traffic - and provide a helping hand when the driver does not have a clear view. Comfort and safety levels are increased significantly as a result, both in town and on long journeys.
And now new systems and an extended range of functions have arrived to further enhance comfort, safety and - through an anticipatory driving approach - efficiency as well. The new driver assistance system features are accompanied by a modified arrangement of the controls on the multifunction steering wheel and improved readouts in the instrument cluster.
The new BMW 6-Series Gran Turismo includes cruise control with brake function and the Attentiveness Assistant as standard.
As in the outgoing model, Active Cruise Control with Stop&Go function is available as an option. This camera- and radar-based driver assistance system consists of:
The upgraded Driving Assistant
The functions of the likewise optional Driving Assistant have been adapted and extended for the new BMW 6-Series Gran Turismo. The camera- and radar-based driver assistance system comprises:
A new, complete comfort and safety package: the Driving Assistant Professional
An array of additional latest-generation driver assistance systems come together in the new, optional Driving Assistant Professional for the BMW 6-Series Gran Turismo. This camera- and radar-based system comprises the features of Active Cruise Control with Stop&Go function and the Driving Assistant already referred to, and adds:
The 3D visualisation of the surrounding area depicts all of the cars, trucks and motorcycles registered by the cameras and sensors in the driver's current lane as well as those in any adjacent lanes. They are shown in the central section of the instrument display. Vehicles within a critical distance are highlighted. Icons indicate situation-specific manoeuvres which can be carried out with the help of the assistance systems. This ensures the driver has an overview of the situation and relevant courses of action at all times. If route guidance is activated, the screen also shows a panel with navigation instructions above the 3D view.
Parking Assistant now with reversing assistant
Further refinements have also been made to the systems which make parking and manoeuvring easier in the new BMW 6-Series Gran Turismo. The standard Parking Assistant helps the driver to select and make use of parallel and perpendicular parking spaces and takes over control of the accelerator, brakes, steering and gearshifts (if required). The system can also be used to pull out from spaces parallel to the road and now includes the reversing assistant as well as a rear view camera and Park Distance Control with front and rear sensors. The reversing assistant offers the extremely convenient option of automated reversing in confined spaces or situations where the driver does not have a clear view, such as multi-storey car parks or entrances to courtyards. To do this, it stores the steering movements for any section the car has just driven forward along at no more than 36 km/h (22 mph). The system is then able to reverse the vehicle for distances of up to 50 metres by steering it along the same line it took when moving forward. All the driver has to do is operate the accelerator and brake pedals and monitor the vehicle's surroundings. The reversing assistant can back the car up automatically at a maximum 9 km/h (5.5 mph).
Optional Parking Assistant Plus offers even greater comfort and precision when manoeuvring
This feature includes the functions of the Parking Assistant described above - and adds Park View, Panorama View and 3D Top View to create a 360° image of the vehicle and its surroundings from different perspectives in the Control Display. Meanwhile, the Remote 3D View function also gives drivers the ability to call up a three-dimensional live image of their vehicle and its immediate vicinity on their smartphone.
The Drive Recorder, a new addition to the BMW 6-Series Gran Turismo, uses the cameras of the various driver assistance systems to record video footage from different points around the vehicle, before storing the recordings so they can be either watched later on the Control Display when the car is stationary or exported via the USB port.
Also on the options list is Remote Control Parking. This function enables the driver to trigger the process of entering and exiting parking spaces from outside the car using the BMW Display Key. In this way, the new BMW 6-Series Gran Turismo can be manoeuvred forwards into tight parking spaces or garages and reversed out of them again. During these manoeuvres, the car's acceleration and braking are monitored by the sensors of the driver assistance systems and overseen by the driver.
Display and operating system, BMW Connected and ConnectedDrive
The arrival of BMW Operating System 7 has significantly expanded the reach of intuitive operation and digital services once again in the new BMW 6-Series Gran Turismo. The BMW Live Cockpit Professional fitted as standard offers drivers a combination of instrument cluster and Control Display, both of which have a screen diagonal of 12.3 inches. Individually configurable display content and a multitude of customisation options pave the way for a remarkably close interaction between driver and car.
The roster of standard features in the new BMW 6-Series Gran Turismo now also includes the innovative BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant. This digital companion is perfectly in tune with the driver's personal requirements and gives them another intuitive way of operating vehicle systems. For the driver, it's just a question of deciding which option lends itself best to the situation at hand - the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant, the Control Display's touchscreen, the familiar iDrive Touch Controller, the controls on the steering wheel or the optional BMW gesture control.
Premiere in the new BMW 6-Series Gran Turismo: BMW Maps - the new-generation navigation system
When it comes to digital services, one of the standout new features for the new BMW 6-Series Gran Turismo is BMW Maps. This cloud-based system has significantly enhanced performance and boasts intuitive destination entry and excellent accuracy. The new-generation navigation system also offers extremely fast route calculation carried out dynamically and at short intervals, based on precise real-time traffic data. The route is worked out using an anticipatory approach, meaning upcoming traffic along the entire route is factored into the calculation of the expected arrival time. Complete traffic data is now available for more minor roads, too. Hazard warnings transmitted online from the BMW fleet now reach the car even faster thanks to connected navigation. These enhancements help to produce a very accurate estimate of arrival time and improve route guidance.
As well as system performance, the destination input function has also been enhanced and now lets the driver enter any word. The search results are sorted by relevance with a high level of precision. Alternatively, the journey's destination can be entered at any time simply by voice control. Plus, points of interest (POIs) along the route are described in greater detail, with reviews, opening times and photos all included.
BMW Maps is also able to provide even more effective assistance when drivers are searching for a parking space close to their destination with Connected Parking. When drivers set their destination in the navigation system, they receive an indication of the parking situation at the destination for their estimated time of arrival. Shortly before arriving, the driver is given information on the nearest multi-storey car park as well as proposed routes offering a particularly good chance of finding a parking spot close to the destination. The familiar On-Street Parking Information and ParkNow services have been intelligently incorporated into the functionality of BMW Maps.
BMW Live Cockpit Professional with a pair of 12.3-inch screens as standard
The BMW Live Cockpit Professional fitted as standard in the new BMW 6-Series Gran Turismo shows information on a fully digital instrument display with a screen diagonal of 12.3 inches and a high-resolution Control Display - now also enlarged to 12.3 inches - with touchscreen functionality. The cockpit's instrument display provides enough room to accommodate an excerpt from the navigation map, status indicators for the driver assistance systems or 3D visualisation of the surrounding area. The display style for the remaining readouts varies according to the mode selected with the Driving Experience Control switch. Drivers can also call up additional content, such as the sport displays, in the instrument cluster's right-hand section.
The main menu on the Control Display lets the driver configure up to ten pages, each showing two to four pads (tiles) with live content. Both the content and the graphics are personalised to an even greater degree. A case in point is the vehicle mock-up, which even replicates the colour and equipment line of the car in question.
Other Live Cockpit Plus features include the iDrive Controller with touchpad, navigation and multimedia systems, two USB ports in both the front and rear, Bluetooth/WiFi interfaces, telephony with wireless charging, a hands-free facility and a built-in SIM card with 4G LTE connectivity. A wealth of digital services are accessible as standard, including Intelligent Emergency Call, smartphone integration, Remote Software Upgrade, over-the-air navigation map updates, Connected Music and BMW Maps (with Connected Navigation, including Real Time Traffic Information RTTI with hazard warning and Connected Parking).
The popular Concierge Service, which offers swift, personalised assistance when searching for an address, for example, or making a restaurant or hotel booking, is likewise available in the new BMW 6-Series Gran Turismo as standard. So are Remote Services, which allow various vehicle functions - such as locking and unlocking the doors - to be controlled remotely using the BMW Connected app.
Smartphone integration with Apple CarPlay and now also with Android Auto
One of the most notable advances as far as connectivity is concerned is the enhanced smartphone integration feature that comes as standard. In addition to Apple CarPlay, which has been available since 2017, the operating system for the new BMW 6-Series Gran Turismo will also host Android Auto from July 2020.
This opens up the same benefits already enjoyed by Apple iPhone owners to Android users too, making it easier to access a great number of digital services from their car in just the same way they do on their smartphone. These include Google Assistant, Google Maps, music streaming services like Spotify and Amazon Music, and the WhatsApp messaging service.
The wireless WiFi connection between the smartphone and vehicle enables the operating system in question to be integrated directly into the fully digital screen grouping in the new BMW 6-Series Gran Turismo. All the key information from the apps made available there can be viewed both in the Control Display and - in a cleverly presented way - in the instrument cluster or optional Head-Up Display. And the new 6-Series Gran Turismo leads the way in showing the turn instructions from smartphone navigation apps in its instrument cluster and Head-Up Display.
BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant: even more freedom with spoken inputs and additional functions
The latest version of the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant will now take the connection between driver and car to a new level in the new BMW 6-Series Gran Turismo. Activated by a spoken prompt (for example "Hey BMW") or at the touch of a button, this digital companion acquires new capabilities all the time.
Naturally formulated spoken instructions can now also be used to open and close the car's windows (partially or fully) or adjust the air conditioning.
In addition, the driver can set rules by which the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant learns routines that increase both convenience and driving pleasure in specific situations. For instance, the driver's window could be opened automatically when the vehicle reaches a chosen location entered using GPS coordinates, such as the entrance to a garage or multi-storey car park.
The BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant is a bona fide expert, who is always on hand to answer the occupants' questions about the car, its functions or even about how to improve driving style.
When the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant is in use, new graphics appear in the Control Display to underline the system's interactive character. The graphic now "turns" towards the speaker, visualising how the assistant is listening attentively to what is being said. The system recognises whether the driver or front passenger is speaking to it, and reacts accordingly by altering the climate control settings on one side of the interior, for example.
Always up to the minute: new Remote Software Upgrade function for over-the-air updates
The Remote Software Upgrade function is also available in the new BMW 6-Series Gran Turismo and will keep it up to date with the latest software. The content of the upgrades ranges from new services to improved vehicle functions. All updates can be imported over the air, either on a smartphone via BMW Connected or directly into the car using its built-in SIM card.
The intelligent connectivity technology on board the new BMW 6-Series Gran Turismo now also makes it possible to incorporate additional vehicle functions at a later date. The optional features that can be retrofitted via this digital channel include the Drive Recorder, which utilises the standard stereo camera fitted next to the rear-view mirror, can likewise be added to the car later. The Drive Recorder allows drivers to shoot videos while travelling through spectacular scenery or performing impressive manoeuvres on a race track, for example. These can then be exported using a USB stick. Recordings can be up to 40 seconds in length. In the event of a collision, a period of up to 20 seconds either side of the moment of impact is automatically recorded and saved.
BMW M Performance Parts
The sporting character of the new BMW 6-Series Gran Turismo and the enjoyment of an engaging driving experience can be enhanced still further with model-specific components and products from BMW M Performance Parts. These retrofit options from the Original BMW Accessories range developed using the racing expertise of BMW M GmbH lend extra depth to the agile and dynamic driving characteristics of the new BMW 6-Series Gran Turismo and bring a powerfully sporty aura to the exterior and interior.
