+ Upgrades in terms of equipment, as of the Terra base grade
+ New Sport grade brings Corolla a young and sporty feel
+ Revamped T Sport matches top-class handling with extra-sporty looks
+ Toyota expects to sell around 175,000 units this year (more than 66,000 units for the new version)
Focusing on Europe
+ First generation launched in 1966
+ World's best-selling model
+ A product of Toyota's Kaizen policy
The new Toyota Corolla carries on where the current Corolla leaves off - as a world beater. Originally designed in the 1960s to target customers from around the world and later engineered with European drivers specifically in mind, the Toyota Corolla has shown the world what a car can do. The best-selling range of cars ever, Corolla has become a name associated with automotive success.
2001 marked a change in the Corolla history. For the first time ever, the first car originally developed for world customers, in its 9th generation, was entirely developed for Europe, then being adapted to all the other world markets. This Corolla was the first clear expression of Toyota's Superior Quality, the cornerstone of Toyota's DNA. As a result, the evolution in perceived quality, design, driving pleasure and innovation represented a quantum leap in comparison with the previous generation.
The new Corolla is the result of extensive customer research, as Toyota looked for every possible way of improving the product it had put on the market in the end of 2001. Toyota is constantly striving for continuous improvement (what Japanese call "Kaizen") and the result of this latest round of changes and enhancements is a range of cars comprising a Hatchback, Sedan and Wagon, that will carry on the Corolla legacy and build upon the remarkable total of around 29 million already built and sold to date.
Developed for active people
+ New 1.4 D-4D engine
+ Improved safety equipment
+ New Sport grade
The development team created cars that offer both refinement (improved perceived quality, superior build) and quality, at many different levels (the 1.4 litre D-4D, more equipment and safety).
A new look and feel not only gives the Corolla range an enhanced image but also brings it even further in line with the harmony created by the other cars in the Toyota stable. The striking new bonnet and front grille, the side skirts and spoilers on the sportier models, colour schemes, smart new interior trims and equipment all combine to move the Corolla up yet another gear.
Redesigned with a lower, more purposeful stance on the road thanks to the new bumpers, grille and lights, the new Corolla carries the reputation as Toyota's most important car with ease. Noise, vibration and harshness (NVH) have all been further reduced with features such as acoustic glass for the windscreen and thicker sound-deadening materials, and performance, handling and roadholding are enhanced in the T Sport version. Equipment inside and out is improved for both higher and lower specification cars and safety is once again given top priority as designers build a car that not only looks good but looks after its occupants too.
Toyota's Vehicle Stability Control (VSC), together with Traction Control (TRC) and Brake Assist (BA), is now available across the entire range while occupants can rest assured that they are protected by the new Corolla's comprehensive airbag system, which incorporates dual-stage inflators, a passenger airbag cutoff switch and complementing the airbags, a two-stage seatbelt warning system. In addition, all versions are available with side and curtain shield airbags.
A new Sport grade has been added to match younger buyers taste.
Powering the new Toyota Corolla is a wide choice of EURO IV engines including the powerful, yet economical diesel-powered 1.4 D-4D, coupled for the first time to Toyota's clever Multimode Manual Transmission (M-MT), an electrically-operated manual gearbox that allows a choice between automatic and sequential gearchange. A range of efficient yet sporting petrol engines is available along with a larger 2.0-litre D-4D and a further automatic transmission option on the 1.6 VVT-i car.
All these improvements will further enhance Corolla's ability to appeal its target audience: self-assured men and women in their 30s.
Re-engineered T Sport tops the range
+ Better handling
+ Better gearchange
+ New eye-catching design
Topped off by the Corolla T Sport, the range truly does have a flagship leading from the front. With the 2002 "Engine of the Year" (1.4- to 1.8-litre category) - the 1.8 VVTL-i - powering it, the T Sport makes full use of the power and refinement available while innovative suspension, including the rock-solid performance dampers and rebound springs, reinforce the car's reputation as a true sports model. Gearchange and steering feel have been improved and the exterior design was upgraded to convey the car an even sportier look. The cabin received several new improvements that reinforce the T Sport character. The new Toyota Corolla is set to be released over the summer months, depending on the country. The original "world's bestseller" has just got even better - and European drivers are about to find out how.
