The 2006 Nissan 350Z, a sports coupe/roadster with an automotive legacy that spans 35 years, comes in 5 trim levels: Base, Enthusiast, Touring, Track, and Grand Touring. For the 2006 model, Nissan made minor equipment enhancements and styling changes, notably to the front bumper, headlights, and grille. For all models of the 350Z, Nissan runs a 3.5-liter DOHC V-6 that produces 300 hp (223KW) and 260 lb-ft (352 Nm) of torque, combined with a six-speed manual transmission. With this powerful configuration, the Nissan 350Z delivers the satisfaction of performing the 0 to 60 mph sprint in about 5.3 seconds and the top speed is electronically limited to 156 mph.
The modest changes for 2006 include a redesign of the Nissan 350Z's interior to provide a more stylish and coordinated experience, with cowhide-wrapped steering wheel, cloth or cowhide bucket seats with extra lateral support for the driver. The Nissan 350Z includes generous power features, with an instrument array that is on gimbals that allow pivoting for better viewing. Overall, the interior is better coordinated, more ergonomically enhanced, and more luxurious than last year.
Contrasting with the base model, the Grand Touring boasts an enhanced footprint with graceful lines that extend to the fender extensions sweeping over the larger wheels. All exterior changes to the Nissan 350Z are almost imperceptible, except for the gem-like LED tail lights and powerful Xenon headlamps. The convertible, as is true with most, looks better with the top down, but sports an all-glass rear window and padded roof.
With such an able performer, one can appreciate the compliment of a thrilling soundtrack, delivered by an optional 240-watt system with 6-CD changer, MP3 capable. Keeping this stallion under control is facilitated by having the necessary controls in an easy to reach array on the steering wheel. A DVD navigation system is optional, as are side and side curtain airbags.
Nissan is determined to make the Nissan 350Z one of the safest sports cars on the road by including ABS, and force distribution, which senses the distribution of weight on the front and rear wheels and distributes the braking force accordingly. A new technology, brake assist, senses emergency braking and applies extra braking force while traction control helps cornering, braking, and accelerating. The Brembo braking system adds the finishing touch on a bounty of performance and safety features.
The new 2006 Nissan 350Z performs as well as others in its class, and is sure to please the ardent sports car enthusiast. Road noise is par for the type of vehicle, and handling is brisk and sensitive, while the suspension may be viewed as stiff, adding to the feel of being connected to the road. Due to reflections and small window areas, visibility may be an issue for the rear and side views.
